The controller has a lot of nerve to KEEP asking the non-pilot to change headings and hold altitudes! Why not just clear the airspace, give him one heading to hook him over to the runway, then one turn to line-up, and just tell him to not go below a certain altitude and speed? Why is "max braking" after he lands being stressed so much when he has a 12,000' runway?
@chrigiammann make sure before u write something. Try PMDG 737NGX go on vatsim for ATC and then post your thouts. After that go for flight experiance and do exactly the same what u did with PMDG 737. The only difference is G forces and stuff.
Thank God for Microsoft Fight Simulator! I probably could try to land a plane from the amount of time I spend on MFSX! It would be extremely hard.... but I probably could do it!
I can see him at his BFR when the CFI checks out his logbook. "So, it says that you have over 150 hours in a Skyhawk, and 30 minutes PIC for a King Air...what's up with that?"
lmao @ those who think they can actually fly an airplane just because they are so called " simmers " or call them self "simmers, be realistic here folks!
I can't help but think of my cousin Scott who's a corporate pilot. The day I got to fly with him in a single-engine plane twice was special! He described everything he was doing, and he even told me that perhaps if the technology became available, I'd be able to fly a plane one day. If we can learn to drive a fully automated car, why not learn how to fly? I get all shaky thinking about it.
I couldn't help but think of my cousin Scott who's a corporate pilot. I've had the good pleasure of being with him in a single-engine plane twice. He described everything he was doing to me, and I was hanging on every word! When I learned that some of my blind friends learned how to takeoff and land on a grassy air strip, I soooo wanted to learn these things as well. Unfortunately, funding for the training ran out.
@iscope100 LOOOOOOOOOLL i'm most certain that you COULDN'T land any jet airplane safely with just your so called experience in Flight Simulator... it's a simulator, but sometimes it just goes way too far from reality... is like assuming you can drive a car by playing mario kart ;)
@RyzonRange well it would be different when its a life or death situation, and when you know about physics and know trajectory, speed, and other variables
@iscope100 you are an idiot. Flight Sim does NOTHING other than maybe teach you a little about the instruments. How could you be audacious enough to say you could land anything when you've never touched an airplane yoke?
@flyauburn13 Yeah I spent lots of time playing flight sims but when I started taking lessons what was weirdest was, (1) the forces are distracting and disorienting, (2) can't see the ground for *** when landing with that wing and dashboard in the way, (3) surprisingly hard to coordinate and hold nose up in turns, i.e. "flying by the seat of the pants" :D Also couldn't tell what the tower was saying to save my life. Definitely agree, 1 hour of real flying is worth more than lots of sim time ...
Just incredible to listen to.Great job by the pilot and ATC.It is amazing how he kept his head about him with just alittle bit of training, and not on that aircraft.I just keep shaking my head and saying, wow. What an experience for he and his family.
@ryancrazy1 Yeah. He should have said Whiskey Yes I had to take a few shots too calm my nerves. That would go over real good. Plane doing a drifting move on the runway just missing the Controller Tower :D
The scary thing is that this is exactly where I am in my own flight training. I know where everything is but it is like handing a nascar to a kid who just got his temps.
That was amazing! You can hear his voice crack on his last transmission. The "good Lord" and him really were hand flying that plane. If he had a cross wind, the outcome probably would had been much different...
Respect to the cool ATC staff and to this amazing pilot. What an awful thing to have to go through, and with a dead person next to you. I believe this guy had only started flying again just before this incident, after a lapse of 18 years. Just goes to show that the training, however long ago, will out.
THIS ACCIDENTAL PIC CONDUCTED HIMSELF VERY WELL. SAVED THE LIVES OF ALL THE PASSENGERS. THE OUTCOME WOULD'VE BEEN QUITE DIFFERENT WITHOUT ANY FLIGHT EXPERIENCE. LOL...THIS PIC SEEMED TO BE TOO FIXATED ON TINY CROSS WINDS. GOOD MAN JUST AS WELL. THOSE PASSENGERS SHOULD'VE KISSED THE HELL OUT OF HIM.
Having been a "four time" flying student of a Piper Warrior, I thought this single engine pilot did a HECK of a job! He was extremely calm. King Air 200's are Beauties! A LOT of plane, to handle! He was a real "pro" at landing that plane and saving the lives of that family on board! God Bless you, sir and my prayers go out to the family and friends of the deceased pilot. RIP.
The passenger luckily has flown a single engine plane before to know how to orient himself by landmarks and interpret instrument readings. Notwhistanding that, it's still a well-coordinated job both by air traffic controller and the pilot.
Whilst I agree a diety had no physical contribution towards this event, the man's faith did give him a sense of confidence that allowed him to function under duress.
I don't believe myself, but I can see how in moments like those it would be good to have faith, hell it might give you faith.
I agree. I also have no faith, but I've seen that other people do, and that their faith may sometimes give them a strength or purpose they would not otherwise have. So whether it's unicorns and rainbows, ~god~ or the flying spaghetti monster, or simply tricking your brain into doing that which it could always do, what difference does it make? Whatever gets you the night, right?
Doug and his wife are wonderful people thank to God he took care of them and gave Doug the nerves to take control. He was flying and they were praying wtg guys. These two people are wonderful folks!!

Unbelievable! Awesome job on both parts!!! text book way to handle a situation like this! Especially a novice pilot landing an unfamiliar plane WITH a dead pilot sitting next to him!!! : O
A few shots of whiskey after he see the captain died did help reduce the fear. Alcohol calms you down and makes you just "do the darn approach and landing" on the bigger airplane. I had to do the same thing on a dam big DC-3 but with the Grumpy Captain on the left seat yelling commands to me (no headsets) instead of dead as i wished the jerk could be.
Chartered pay, single engine pilots are put to do the landing on easy weather, wind & airplane.
This is just fantastic to hear how people that have never met each other have teamed up to save people's lives. Amazin the control of the "pilot" and amazing the confidence given by the ATC.
Good job done by all involved. Only a redneck southerner could've handled it the way he did. Of all the planes to be in he's lucky he was in one of the best planes ever built.
I could just imagine though the chaos on the ground with all of them looking in the King Air flight controls manual giving this guy instructions! Thank you for sharing this audio with us Airboyd!

UNBELIEVABLE. This is amazing. Just think that man had no idea that he and the "good Lord" would be bringing that plane in. The good lord knew he could do it. I'm speechless. This is absolutely amazing.
this guy has a single engine PPL and the King is a pretty complex aircraft but he did an amazing job, im speechless, he sounded really professionnal and calm, really nice! well done. R.I.P. the pilot
I'm amazed by how calm and professional this guy was....dude has never flown a multi engine airplane, let alone a turboprop, has a dead guy sitting next to him and pulls off a flawless landing. This man deserves a medal.
man I hope that guy got a stiff drink after, he earned it! you could hear in his voice after he halnded , he was almost in tears, I can only imagine the intensity of that feeling of releif he had! 5 stars to all involved, ATC and our substitute pilot. dud they ever find out why the pilot died? all I know is thats a hell of a way to get your multi and turbine time!
WOW!! My dad would always ask me this question ever since he knew I wanted to be a pilot... If the pilots died would you be able to land the plane... This proves that it is possible..... COOOOOLLLL!!!
Atcs are experts at remaining calm in situations like this, very impresive.

8:17 what is 9DW asking? 8:29 how does FM approach phrase his question about the fuel?
Thank you, can't quite catch those.
mickybadia 2 years ago
8:17 9DW is just trying to get some sort of "situational awareness" in where he is at and where he is going.
8:29 ATC says "You've only been airborne so and so" he's just trying to figure out if fuel starvation is another problem that he needs to worry about.
This ATC at Ft. Myers is named Brian Norton and he is a PRO and one of the "nicest" guys in the WORLD. And he is also a pilot!

Autopsy just said "Natural Causes"..........DUH!
whizzer53 2 years ago
WOW!! My dad would always ask me this question ever since he knew I wanted to be a pilot... If the pilots died would you be able to land the plane... This proves that it is possible..... COOOOOLLLL!!!

Is this a jet, or a prop plane?
FiringOnAllEight 2 years ago
a bit of both, its a turbo prop airplane
cooldudeprav 2 years ago 2
A turbo prop and a jet has nothing to do with each other
Oddjob2331 2 years ago
they both run on the exact same fuel, and have similar engineering on the inside!!

@Oddjob2331 i woundn't say nothing to do with each other.
