I recall this too!! I had bought "Murmur" and no one else I knew had any idea who they were! Michael Jackson's pop crap was all over the TV and on the radio. Oh, but REM was the underground band and people finally noticed them!
I remember seeing this on cutting edge in autumn '84. Those who bought the first four REM albums started up their own bands. God bless and thank you Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe.
@kaptainkrunch thats how it worked for us, then in 82 i ended up at the famous Lawrence afterparty beginnings, now, since WSB has died, they dont come to Lawrence anymore...maybe they do and im out of the loop. Then our band ended in 03 due to death and illness.
