  • two words; science class.

  • do u have MR kaleta too :) he taught us this today lol..... only 1 person sang in my class...... LOL lol

  • I have my lyric sheet in my room lol

  • thats where i first heard this song

  • It really doesn't bother me when other people have a different religion than me, it bothers me when people diss my religion. I'm not insulting you, but I would like to know why you beleive in no God. Not because I want to critisize you, but because I'm curious. I wouldn't want to be an aethiest but it would be interesting to find out why some one would.

  • I'm an Atheist. The thing is I don't think Christians are ignorant or anything. What I hate is when people try to condemn me or shove a bible down my throat. THOSE are the ignorant, presumptuous, arrogant bastards. I also hate the people that use religion as an excuse for war. That just fucks with what religion is supposed to be. I still try to be a good person because of the tit-for-tat part of nature. Also there's always Pascal's Wager...

  • Wasn't this on Bill Nye the Science guy years ago?

  • I wish I knew about this song in grade school. It would have been useful back when we studied the solar system when I was a kid.

BTW, don't feed trolls; they thrive on attention.

  • FEED ME!

  • stop fighting you'll cause another war

  • srry I ment to respond to the people arguing about religion

  • Once again, don't feed trolls. Don't even acknowledge their existence. Doing otherwise gives them what they want, and validates their childish behavior in their own minds. Just ignore comments that are trying to inflame tempers, as well as those with inflamed tempers, and you'll be fine.

Remember folks, trolls die if you don't feed them.

As for commenting on the video, They Might be Giants have actually made a few other videos that are educational in nature. Istanbul, for example.

  • I used this to study for my science test, unfortunately i broke into song during the test.

  • There is insufficient evidence for either Christian views or those of atheism or humanism. It is an unavoidable fact that ALL scientific views are slanted one way or another by one's philosophical or theological preferences. Non Christians can say that "faith" in something is insufficient and there is no proof to back it up.... but even atheists need a good amount of "faith" to believe a lot of the unproven stuff they profess.

  • i herd this at school

  • Why are we even on the topic of religions? I thought this was for comments about the video! By the way it's a good song and the video is cute too in my opinion...

  • the sun is hot the sun is not a place where we could leve

  • wtf? rly wtf? XD

  • What are you, a christian?

  • I'm christian and i like these guys

  • Excuse me, but what does that song have to do with christianity at all?

  • Hey, dont diss Christians dude, I'm a Christian and I got no problem with this song. What are you, one of those dudes that thinks Christians are evil and horrible even though he has no evidence to back his shit up? Quit insulting good people

  • How many people have been killed in the name of God? I bet that shut you right up. Religion in general is stupid. However I am not condamning you for accepting it, I only want you to know that there is a large amount of evidence disproving most religions on this planet. Try looking up "The Biggest Secret" and read the chapter "The Suns of God".

  • SSXtrike

Ok, let it go dude. The Crusades were a long time ago, the Pope has even APOLIGIZED for it, they were bad yeah, but not as bad as some one the religious prosecution going on today (Hmmm, not done by the evil Catholincs, weird.. [sarcasm]) And I also love the fact that you neglected to mention all of the good things that Christians are doing, like the nuns in the Philipines who are working to stop the crime and hand out food to the poor.

I bet that shut you right up.

  • actually there only giving food to the people that accept there religion.

  • Read The Biggest Secret and you will understand the point I am trying to express. I would be just like you, arguing the same stuff, but then you see this mountain of evidence I cannot ever hope to fit into a single comment, so until you read it, I have nothing more to say to you. btw, you'll have to google the book, because you're unlikely to find it anywhere else.

  • they started singing about history witht he song "james k. polk." in their words, TMBG takes the most boring subjects and sings about them. it's all for fun.

    does that answer your question?

  • So you're anti-intellectual?

  • oooh no! science!

    boo fucking hoo.

  • these guys, and the aquabats, are so freakin funny

  • Very nice video to go with a great song, good job!

  • This is a great song :D

  • nice. i think i might show this to my science teacher, if we learn about the sun.

  • i heard this in my biology class from my teacher's ipod and thought it was awesome!!

  • omg so catchy and nerdy like me!

  • wow, catchy and educational. I highly approve of this song

  • IRONMAN!!!!!!!!

  • This is funny:

The original "Why Does the Sun Shine?" was recorded in the 1950s and based off encyclopedic facts from the time, which were later discovered to be incorrect; the sun is not made of gas, rather it is in the fourth state of matter—plasma. The band decided that an "answer song" was in order, so that the song they had been covering for over two decades could be corrected.

Why Does The Sun Really Shine? (The Sun Is A Miasma Of Incandescent Plasma)

    They might be giants rock!!

  • DAMN you got theory xD

one thing they are rigth the is HOT!!xD

  • I'm a sun worshipper.

Not really. I'm a sun 'appreciater'.

But because I appreciate it, I'm often told I'm a sun 'worshipper'.

Some of my friends aspouse some GOD notions. But they can't hold a candle to the sun.

Sometimes, in their reflective moments, they admit, too, that they appreciate the sun.

With this compromise, I almost feel guilty about not seriously accommodating their man-made GOD stuff.

They are my friends, and I value their thoughts.

But there is wheat, and there is chaff.

  • Sir? Your shipment of FAIL has arrived. Seriously? If you don't like it, why'd you bother to comment on it? HUH?

  • u listened it didnt you?

if u didnt, then how do u noe if its for fags?

  • Well, I'm gay anyway so I guess it works out :)

  • thissong was my science essay last year lol

    love tmbg

  • i love this song it is awsome i learnd it in sience

  • one of my fave tmbg songs. :D

  • poop

  • you really made this vid well alot of times with vids with pics they just put pictures but you zoomed and stuff idk it looks good

  • We had to listen to this song in science today......

  • LOL, any kid who asks me this question will get this video as an answer. :D

  • I am the proud owner of the original recording of this song, from the album, "Space Songs, from Ballads for the Age of Science by Hy Zaret and Lou Singer" performed by Tom Glazer and Dottie Evans. The first time I heard TMBG do this, I freaked out because I immediately remembered it from when I was around 8 years old, in the mid-60's! I dug the record out of my parents' basement as soon as I heard TMBG's version.

  • At their show on 11/28, they made a new song to counter the facts from this song. John said that the information presented was not exactly correct and they played a song about how the sun is made of Plasma....

  • I saw them play it on the 26th. Its called The Sun is a Miasma of Incandescent Plasma.

  • b-e-a-utiful

  • haha bruce almighty i always say it like that

  • whos the gut who sings this? he sounds like he has an accent

  • John Linnell. I don't *think* he has an accent.

  • Wrong, John Linnell only sings in certain parts of the song (He sings along with Flanz and does the speaking portions). The majority of the song is sung by the other John, a one Mr. John Flansburgh. And no there is no accent.

  • you might have heard this if you ever went to Antioch College in Yellow Springs Ohio, or have been there. One of them (I can't remember which John it was)Went to Antioch and "borrowed"this song from a professor

  • Where have I heard this before!?

  • A cartoon network commercial. I saw it passing one day. Thought it was neat when I saw a buncha kids kicking around the sun. It's not the whole song, just a clip, but I searched for it for a long time before finding it. Funny part is that I was already familiar with They Might Be Giants before I tried to find the song, and had no idea they sang it at the time.

  • Yeah, that's really funny.

  • my teacher played this in class lol last year

  • hahahha!!! my science teacher made us sing it last year XD

  • it rocks D::

  • olol

  • OMG Ive sang this song since i was like 4!!!!

my uncle taught me it =DD

    i love it!

  • I know that TMBG hate it when you call them quirky, but, well, there's not much more to say to this song. >_>

  • Jeez, we're are all these guys coming from? All these people who are coming here and saying they don't like TMBG and mocking everyone who does, why are you here? I don't go over to screamo music and start disrespecting everyone even though I myself hate the genre. Can't you all just respect that the band enjoys playing their music, the fans like it, and leave them to it?

No I am not a fan of TMBG, but I am sick of these extremely common intolerant opinions on utube comments.

  • Shanomo, Get used to it. These people are screaming for attention from someone, anyone even negative attention. They know their insults and curses will get a rise out of someone. Then they get too abuse the persons who stands up and more or less highjack the comments (Ahh the attention). They are nothing more than a TROLL. Just shows you how empty some people lives are. That they have to abuse people too feel like their somebody. Best to just ignore them remember DON'T FEED THE TROLL.

  • Lincoln, MA! Yeah!

  • Yes, it's a definite whore trait.

  • omg my teacher plays this everyday,,,and we have to LEARN the song!!

  • guess what i just learned! =D

  • Watch electric universe, it would have to differ.

  • my science teacher plays this song EVERYDAYYY!!!

  • i do not think i am smarter than i am!

  • you're the fag. intelligent people are just interested in different things.

  • Intelligent, huh? I find that people who say they're intelligent are usually the opposite. As far as you calling me a fag, I can deal with that. Just try to remember that if you're gonna call someone a fag in the future, try not to do it while defending this band. It kinda cuts into your credibility. They Might Be Giants isn't exactly a bastion of machismo. A They Might Be Giants concert makes a broadway musical look like a UFC event.

  • hahaha. okay mr bad. you're the one getting all worked up over nothing.

and my credibility? well im sure listening to a band determines my sexuality. mhmmmm.

  • If I see a group of men walking into a Liza Minnieli concert, I will assume they're gay. If I see guys walking into a They Might Be Giants concert, I don't think they're gay necessarily, but I know they must be pseudo intellectual pussies with a dysfunctional view of hipness. Now go listen to the Smiths and shut the fuck up.

  • that's Liza Minnieli, the ghost version! what am i gonna do?

calm down. what the hell is the point in telling someone off on youtube?

really, if you think you're so badass, you wouldn't even reply.

"now go listen to the smiths and shut the fuck up"

okay. cause that certainly makes sense.

  • You're projecting. Who's getting fired up? Am I the first guy to bust balls on you tube?

  • haha no but the people that do that are sad.

and you seem to be all wound up about this mess. like it even matters anymore. personally, i think it's funny.

  • I was just screwing around. I could give a crap. You're getting all riled up. I'm not sure trying to enforce politeness on Youtube is less sad than those being impolite. I'm hardly wound up. You think I'm frothing over my keyboard as I mock TMBG fans?

Look, sorry. I didn't mean to offend you. You like TMBG? Salud.

  • haha. ah. well i think it's funny to do that to some people.

just sorta fun. heh. and im hardly a fan.

  • the troll fails

    Noob.

  • "DONT FEED THE TROLL". They throw out some bait and your on the hook. Ignore, just like I'm about to.

  • haha i know. really though, the person's quite meaningless. i just hate it when people try to bash others who enjoy certain things. same old shit.

  • I love these guys. :D

  • this reminds me of the songs our freaky teacher made us learn in science *eye twiches*

but i cant stop cracking up to this for some reason!1

  • wow. this is kinda dumb

  • soshi5dude jonas brothers suck dude open ya ears man. this is good music

  • YOOO this helped me pass a test!! DAM GOOD ASS BAND!

  • Should anybody really be listening to them?

  • yoooooo i hear this song years ago on nickelodeon

  • if it wasn't for tiny toons i never would have listened to these guys music. It pays to watch mindless children's programming i guess

  • did any 1 else get high to this song?

  • YEAH.

  • i like skullivan

  • great! as simple as that!

  • i like how bill nye talks in the song
