I don't know what to say about this song. This is a stunning platform for introducing jazz and classical elements to English pop culture. In 1966, English music was centered around music hall styles and folk-music. The Mersey Street sound was a commercial success, but lacked any substance. Jack Bruce's classical and jazz influences must be the source for this beautiful melody. This is beautiful beyond description.
This was extraordinary from the first few bars-Jack expressed so much with the simplest arrangement. Not sure if he used a "Leslie" as a treatment on the vocal? In 68 a couple of guitarist friends debated whether or not Jack was mocking Donovan's vocal style-cos we thought him a preening putz.Last, innovation of one band can stoke creativity of their peers give the Beatles the nod for 1st using Third World elements w/ Norwegian Wood,Hollie's"Carrie Ann",Cream "As You Said", then Zep's'Kashmir".
The sign of Cream's (and Jack Bruce's) greatness is that virtually any other band working this song up would have added a complex drum track, but Ginger Baker - a great drummer - simply plays hi hat and nothing else - not even sticks or brushes. Less is more. Genius
Heard this on XM Deep Tracks this morning and hummed it all day. Don't remember it from the old days, but the strumming reminds me a bit of something Led Zeppelin did. 3? Friends?

Most unique Rock song ever, my favorite Cream song, as for Jack bruce saw him with cream in 69, and with Leslie West in 72, awesome musician, one of the best bassists ever(loved the bassist in Yes also, can't recall his name now), guess I need a hit or 2 or 3 of acid to connect the brain waves again.
Jack Bruce..What a Voice. For me of the one very best voices of the 20th century./
excepting James Joyce....Nut did I say voice? Nay Lyricist!! Bassist? Nay Angel...-never understood the fuzzy hat but God He simply Must sing at my departure!
I hadn't heard this song in twenty years. There's a French expression "Presque Vu" I think it is. It means a feeling that is real and defenite but remains just outside of conscious, verbal expression. Jack Bruce achieved it with this song. It is in fact a very haunting . It may be a tired cliche but they don't make songs like this anymore.
for those who dont know, jack bruce is playing guitar on this one. he was shown an open tuning by richie havens and eric clapton encouraged jack to play on it. and by the way, jack did not write the lyrics to this song. pete brown did.
i think the last period of REALLY good music was the early 90's during the grunge movement...sure, there's been some good stuff since then but the music business is so much more shallow nowadays...especially all these god-damn screamo bands with repetitive riffs that are way too fast, and the same whiney singing reprove in the middle...it all sounds the same
I don't no what my friends see in the new stuff. This is the kind of music that new groups should be playing, but instead they play rap, or mimic queers like Britney Spears. I hate it so much.
It's all about ego these days. If people let go of their need for attention and ego fulfillment they might be able to make music of substance again. As it was.
I love the celtic sounds that Jack adds to his songs. I just wish one tome someone would add a bagpipe. That would be cool. Especially to the Deserted Cities of the heart song.
If any of these whiney acoustic singer songwriters actually thought they knew how to write a song, they would listen to this and possibly get a clue. Maybe
You're right..nowadays, all the kids got is "techno-noise", etc.,...I used to play when it was only 3-pc. bands...ya' had'ta do it, or get out of the circuit
