When I was 13 I flew in the 'jump seat' in the cockpit of VH-TJK 'Douglas Mawson' (I think) from BNE to CNS. Still one of the the most vivid and happy memories of my childhood in Cairns. My Dad was then the Company Sec. for Bush Pilots Airways - hence the 'company' privilege. Thanks to the Captain and FO on that flight who really made me feel at home.
i remember as a child taking my first flight in a ANA DC3 Cairns to Cooktown - it was to me and still is the greatest event of my life time - I still remember TAA and ANA they were the glorious days of flying
Wonderful video of a truly great airline, I feel sorry for people who have only known Jetstar & Virgin Blue...back when flying was seen for what it was a privelidge and not an aerial bus service for bogans...thanks again well done!!! 10 out of 10
Thankyou for the time you have spent creating this video..I loved TAA and first flew syd-perth in '77. Like others it has brought back many fond memories of my youth going to Mascot, watching the planes land from the northern old observation decks at the international terminal back in the 70's. I lived under the old e/w flt path and would be running out watching the DC-10's, 747's, DC-9's and 727's. Living in Brissy now, a 727 (no sure owns it) flies in and out daily - oh the drone of a 727!

hey Scott... Im in Tassie and I am really pleased to hear that because on the odd occasion I have suspected hearing the roar of a 727 overnight, but when i posed the question, other enthusiasts said that AAE definatly were not flying the 727s anymore. However i did suspect that they still have maybe one in service.
Hi Summerwind. One of those strange historical coincidences... When Australian Airlines had been incorporated into QANTAS as the domestic arm, the name on the bow of the aeroplanes changed to 'QANTAS The Australian Airline' (if you read the initials it comes out as QANTAS TAA). The old brand just kept coming back
Thanks so much for this piece. This ad campaign started for me a life-long love affair with flying. I still get a thrill hearing the sound of jet engines winding up, and this song gives me happy goosebumps!
I know they had one - am not too sure if it is still in use. I often see a white 727 with no tags out front of john Holland aviation. I suspect that it used to be the AAE one!
A 727 flew over my house the other night - quite a sound - love it.
Thanks. I grew up with TAA. My father flew regularly and as a child I was allowed to see him off - Viscounts, F27s and Electras - standing outside the old Domestic terminal (though my favourite was catching a Qantas Dc-4 starting up).
Later in life I would get a B727 down to Melbourne and back once a week. What a great bird!! I felt I had arrived when a smiling young lady in blue uniform asked me what I would like to drink and swished off down the aisle for my G&T.
Its comments like your that really make this video what it is! Your comment gives people an insight into air travel during that era - something which I was not able to achieve with my video clip. I am glad u enjoyed your travels :)
Your Dad flew Electras? So did mine! (Flt Eng) Then Connies,Super Connies and 707's. When I was a kid at home I'd get wind of something afoot. "I'm ducking out to work(Flt Eng Training,Mascot), you want to come?" I was in the car and buckled up in a blink!!
The sights and sounds.. and smells.. I smell Kero of the jet variety and I'm back there 4ft tall and looking up at the big jets.. . Beat Thunderbirds everytime.. 8-)
Sounds fantastic... I would so love to learn to be an ATC but being tied down in a regional city with a couple of kids is a slight preventative right now. I listen to the Tasmanian towers and the southern relay regularly :D
Hey Summer Great vid, Showed a mate this vid and he loved it, he's really into aviation cos his father is a pilot and he grew up in melbourne he says he remembers these airlines very well! He also said that you would be a very interesting person to meet and to talk to about airplanes!!! I only remember the old Fokkers from when I was a kid flew to melbourne with Eastwest, those planes were a lot different to what they are nowadays!
Thats really nice, thank your friend for the compliment! You can tell your friend that while I enjoy aircraft I am only moderatly educated about them. I remember East West; they used to fly into Devonport and Burnie in Tassie. Those airports are now serviced by the dash 8's and saabs of Rex and qantaslink.
Thanks for the reply will sure pass on ur thanks, I'm a burnie boy and have lived here all my life and ofen go the the airport in wynyard to watch the rex planes come and go, I also used to live in wynyard years ago just over from the airport and was lucky enough to own a scanner to pick them up and listen into, sadly I have parted with it since then but if u know of where i can get one that will pick up aviation channels I'd be happy to know!
Aaaah it was great to see 'em old 727s, the DC9s and the Friendships in classic TAA blue livery. Beautiful time. Great memories. One thing that I always remember with those crafts, they do make great noise even when many miles away. The Boeing tri-jet can make such a racket when taking off or during low cloud cover. And the F27 - my god. Gotta love the sweet prop sound coming from their turbo-jet engines.
Great to meet another fan of the F27 'Friendship'. In its day, the airliner with the best unpowered glide-ratio in the world. And a very serviceable and versatile aeroplane
Oh ok then, JetsTarr ahuhhh..........I Do wish another company would open another premium airline equivlant to qantas, singapore airlines, emirates, qatar airways and thai and cathay pacific etc. My vision is Victoria International Airlines. A airline with its main base in melbourne with a state of the art training facilitie and fleet full of boeing 787's and a380's and some a320's for domestic flights. With a budget varient of theres called Air Melbourne similar to what germany has Air Berlin.
No Qantas took over TAA and operated as Australian Airlines in 1986, then later became qantas domestic. I was in my teens and a regular flyer when all these changes took place. Jetstar came into existance after 2000 when qantas took over the fleet of planes belonging to Impulse Airlines who barely got their budget airline off the ground.
Qantas are still operating domestic flights today in their own right as well as through Eastern Australia Airlines (qantaslink) and they also carry freight for Australian Air Express as well as operating their international routes.
Hi Summerwind, TAA changed its name to Australian Airlines in 1986 and was still a government-owned airline but at that time was not part of QANTAS. It was sold to QANTAS in 1992 and became the domestic arm of QANTAS. The cabin crew members I knew at the time called it Quandom :-)
Yes they were one of our first airlines and they are a very big part of Australian aviation history. They were sold to Qantas in the late 80s, became Australian Airlines before becoming Qantas Domestic.
what a great snippet you put together, congrats on a fine piece of work. The original sound track you included is great music too, by a group out of the sixties called the 5th Dimension. TAA used this tune with slighty changed lyrics, worked a treat though as it was one of the most successfull marketing campaigns of all time !! I know that as a child watching the TAA ads, everytime i watched and heard that music, i wanted to fly !! Well done for letting us relive our memories. regard Eddie Tava
My most vivid memory regarding TAA ads is that my schoolmates used to sing the jingle in the playground - proof of how great that ad campaign really was! My first flight was on the T-jet with my twin brother when i was 9 in 1974 from Sydney to Brisbane return. We disembarked onto the tarmac (at Brisbane) right near the roaring jet!
Thats awesome! I live in Tasmania and we still disembark onto the tarmak but that could possibly change with the redevelopment os Launceston Airport. Thx for watching!
