I love elephants, one of my favorite earthlings. Such gentle, lovely and intelligent creatures. As for the human beings, i'm not generally fond of them for good reasons.

It is quite funny to read comments of people who have never even seen an elephant in the wild. It would be quite educational for tree huggers to actually follow a path after an elephant and see the total destruction of a once beautiful enviroment, elephants tear down everything around them when they walk around. This alone makes me want to shoot an elephant, not even mentioning the feast one could have after taking down this much meat on four legs.

@KoivuTheHab : If it were not for the elephants, the savanna would not exist. They clear large tracks of land for other animals to exist in as well. It's all very balanced. You should see what the forests have become when the herds of buffalo and carribou were drastically reduced in north America.

The government has no control over this. Rangers and game wardens are paid through a fund set up by the CNR. It gets all it's funds from hunting permits. Hunters and guides catch more poachers than the wardens who mainly check all permits.

I was surprised that they said, "Elephants who witnessed the massacre of their families when they were young still refuse to reutrn to the scene of the crime..." It speaks to the horrific nature of what happened, because there have been numerous studies showing that elephants regularly revisit the bones of former members of their herds. Not to be crude, but they can actually saw off an elephants tusk to get the ivory without hurting the elephant -- like clipping a toenail.

This might seem like a crazy idea. But chemists should find a way to synthetically create ivory, using the same method elephants use to create their tusks.

This'll either deflate the value of ivory or at least minimize poaching.

I think the Goverments might be a bit busy what with the Economic melt down, Global warming, rising tension with the East and Russia etc, etc. The only Goverment in a real position to do anything is the Kenyan goverment and until they can start looking after there Human population, im afraid the Elephants are stuck in the position they are currently in.
