I think Capra's films gave us something to shoot for and don't necessarily represent the time period as it was. They were meant to give people hope and make them think about how they could improve this world through their own actions. Having seen a lot of films old and new though, I would have to say that 80% of films made today are pure garbage presenting pure vileness for morals. It seems to take old folks like Eastwood, Spielberg, Lucas, and a few others to make a good movie now.
