as i commented on Captain Awesomes video, Ethanol is the way we should be going until hydrogen technology is developed, as you mentioned about smog, in Brazil all cars are required to run on at 20+% ethonol mix and in Saul Palo there is next to no smog left, as ethanol is cleaner burning.
You're wrong about the solar powered car. If you could use 100% of the energy in the sunlight that hits the Earth you get ca. 1kW per 1 square meter and 1kW equals 1.34 horsepower so to get the same amount of power in a solar powered car as a low end petrol powered car of say 50 horsepower you'll need ca. 37 square meters of solar panels and that's not really practical is it?
Solar powered power plant on the other hand will and does work.
