this just comes to show how every band member had der own influence in music and made this band so unique it workd they broke on thru to the other side yea!..
According to the band, "Break on Through" incorporated a Bossa Nova drum beat, the keyboard theme from Ray Charles' "What I'd Say" in a different key, the guitar riff from the Butterfield Blues Band's "Shake Your Moneymaker" in a different key, and vocals inspired by the poetry of Dylan Thomas and Brendan Behan. "Break on Through" is a classic song from a phenomenal group.
We all know and love the Doors 1st TV Show appearance, on Januay 1, 1967. Certainly, a band that has what it takes to "make it all the way..." Dan O'Niallain
It is being lip synced. Back on old TV performances in the 60s and the 70s, the shows had them lip sync. sometimes they would pre-record the bands part, and let the singer sing live, but in this case they didn't. Shows like Top Of The Pops had the band pre-record a song, then mimic it for television. Check out Rod Stewart performing Maggie May on Top Of The Pops in 1971. A few members of the band, including lead guitarist, were kicking a soccer ball around during the solo, and not even playing.
If you notice, Jim isn't wearing leather pants yet. He wore a suit coat a la The Beatles. Funny thing--the Beatles had abandoned their suits by 1967...wonder why Jim thought he should wear that...
Probably because this was a good 5 months before' Light My Fire' hit. "Break On Through' did them fairly well locally but tanked as far as national recognition until the lp was released 6 monthe later. I spect they dress the way they did because they were still struggling at the time of this show and broke.
The applause was rather anemic, which may explain why the song never charted. It may be because it's kind of a far-out topic, but it's catchy.Jim is pretty subdued here. I am thinking he was nervous or something. He definitely was channeling and not just performing. It's a freaky kind of feeling you get watching him...
@lemurianchick Back in those days fans of this music were termed "the freakouts" because the word "hippie' was not in the common nomenclature. Such intensity was so out of the mainstream. there was a very vibrant strain of plain old "straight" teens in early 67. The revolution and shock was still to come. Chrissakes I feel old
So are Robbie , Ray & John but Jim will be forever young.
Say , dig the quasi 'Yardbirds' theme music for the show rght after the Doors wrap up.On the cusp here in L.A. from Swinging london to Frisco. As Pete Seeger said: "Wasn't that a Time"....g'bleshya Cultperson 93 93/93
The first tv appearance by the Doors. So why is the stereo track used? The original mono is more important as a document. Nice to see but a disappointment "modernizing" it.
Shebang was owned by Dick Clark and in the beginning of the run they would ship the kids in a bus up to Bakersfield to tape a week's full of shows at KBAK (channel 29)...Did it on the cheap...Then they did them live with Kasey Kasem as the host in the big studio at channel 5 in LA...Very innovated video on this show...
@sincityartie Thanks you are soooright I remember it all now ........KFWB...CHANNELL98COLORADIOOOOOOOOOO.
Any you tubes that you know from 9the Street West ? hosted by the same guy that was Engineer Bill on Ch.9. I've seen stills of the Byrds clip w Gram......let us know please
Fascinating, though this would be better if the original mono lip-synch soundtrack were here. Dubbing over the stereo version is mighty distracting, even if it is timed to Jim's lip movements very well.
i just read about this on a blogspot but there is NO info about a los angeles tv show called "Shebang" that I can find. It was local wasnt it? info: To promote the single, the Doors made their television debut on a Los Angeles TV show called Boss City, circa 1966, possibly early 1967 and then on a Los Angeles TV show called Shebang, miming to "Break On Through," on New Years 1967. This clip has never been officially released by the Doors but can be seen on YouTube."
