I love the contrast in this scene. I mean, when Christine walks through the mirror with the Phantom everything looks so surreal, but when Meg finds the secret passage way, you realize that it was all just Christine's imagination. It's kind of sad that all the Phantom can offer to her is just an illusion, while the real life is all dark and filthy.
So, I'm playing Madame Giry in our high school production of "Phantom of the Opera", and I was just wondering: Anyone know what her hairstyle is called? :B
It's too bad that Kevin Mcnally doesn't sing Buquet's lines, he just recites them. But that is cool too, because it sort of reminds us of how brilliant he is when he tells stories as Mr. Gibbs.
I love the part where Meg goes into the hallway! It's great! It says much about Meg, and somehow warning about the future from this character in the stage sequel.
Ironically Joseph Buquet's description of the phantom is more appropriate of the early phantom publications, including the Lon Chayney Jr adaption and original novel. The phantom in the newest adaption was actually criticized for being too attractive.
For comparison's sake: before the Lon Chaney adaption started patrons were told to keep smelling salts on hand. Wether people actually fainted in theatres or not I couldn't speak to. But interesting tidbit there.
@runevi I have to agree. The deformity in stage productions and old movies are much worse, which makes it better. I don't know if this makes sense. I think the deformation of the 2004 movie was understated... a lot. It's supposed to be closer to Monsieur Boquet's description right now.
@kirasimba If you keep your hand at the level of your eyes, your hand will prevent the lasso from closing around your neck completely, letting you slide the rope off harmlessly. After that the Phantoms lost his main element of surprise. Thats why Madame Giry says that all the time :)
@thepurplecrystalz I just realized that he mimics his fate in this movie during Pirates. In Curse of the Black Pearl, at the beginning, after Norrington tells Elizabeth he'll give pirates and their friends a "short drop and sudden stop", Gibbs pulls on his kerchief around his neck, miming a hanging. And, of course, Buquet is hanged in this movie.
Anyone figure out why the heck Erik killed Buquet? He never did anything to him and yet Erik still killed him.
This encompasses my big complaint about the Andrew Loyd Webber version. It's clear the writer knew what the Phantom was supposed to look like. He may have even had a short chat with the oblivious person who designed the Phantom's look, but while the film agnowledges Gaston Leroux's Erik, it also rejects him for a handsome man with a itchy rash on his face.
Why does no one listen to Madame Giry when she says "Keep your hand at the level of your eyes!"?! I mean, Joseph didn't listen, and guess what? He DIED. Near the end, she tells Raoul the same thing, but did he listen? No! And he didn't die, but he still had to figure out how to get out of the lasso. As a recall, it was actually Christine who saved him. It's ironic that he goes to save her (which he does at the end) and yet she saves him in a way, too. xD
Really? Are the movie fans so ignorant they can't even figure that out? The Title Song is very stylized, and Christine is in a dream like state so she is seeing things that aren't really there. The ugly cellar is really how the lair should appear to a person not in the Phantom's trance.
nope...he tells raul that...joseph dies in the first chapter...they find him hanging around in the third level of the cellars...if you know what I mean.
i get confused when she says that, "keep your hand at the level of your eye"... she doesn't only say it to the guy who was telling the story to the girls, but she also says it to raoul when she's leading him down to find the phantom at the end. what does it mean?
Does Madam Giry have some sort of relationship with the Phantom? She knows of the secret passageway, plus she gets Raoul out of the mirror thingie in "Why so silent?" She also knows what the rose meant.
Yeah, she does. When Madame Giry was a little girl, her and her ballet class went to a circus where the Phantom was being held and shown off for money. She saved him and let him live in the opera house basement, where he apparently remodeled it and spent his life as a crazy person. ^^ Hope that helps!
In the play she just knew him from before but it was never stated she helped him escape. I think he knew that she knew his secrets but she kept her mouth shut. She is a combination of two characters from the book Madam Giry whose daughter was a ballet brat and she was an box attendant whose husband died and the Persian who knew the phantom and his secrets because he helped him escape Persia.
so was the whole hands for lanterns in the passageway just her imagination, cz she was in a dream world bein so shocked to see the phantom?? the passageway looked horrible haha
I know why Giry says "Keep your hand at the level of your eyes" but when I first I saw the movie, I she's telling Bouquet for being a perv. You know, "keep your hands to yourself!" that sort of thing.
As I mentioned recently, Madame Giry really knew what she was talking about. I also beleive that she was trying to keep everybody out of trouble. Makes sense does it not? But, again, I don't feel a bit sorry for Bouque when he got his at the end of this next scene.
This scene was interesting because madame giry wanted to joseph buquet to bad which joseph buquet was crazy guy i think because when christine sing angel of music with meg when they finished the song joseph buquet was looking christine i don't like that the way he looks at her.Joseph buquet looks like he going to kill christine which cannot happen. And he was looking so badly.
if your hand is at the level of your eyes than when erik lassos you it goes around your arm and neck so you could pull it back over and not get killed.... get it?
"Keep you hand at the level of your eyes!" Oh Madame Giry really knows what she's talking about. Don't push The Phantom or he may do something terrible like this next scene thats coming up. I don't feel a bit sorry for Botque. Sorry. Anyway, I love this scene. Keep up the great work. :)

This scene is odd in a few ways:
It spoils the magic mirror trick, making The Phantom appear to be nothing more then an elaborate magician.
It describes The Phantom as he looks in the book, saying "the nose which never grew". In the film he clearly has a nose.
ChildOfTheWilderness 4 years ago
I think the nose thing was just referencing back to the book. The 1925-27? version has a similar scene.
