Buck, Kershaw, Cold Steel in no particular order for me. As far as customer service is concerned...I have never had to return any of their blades. Another to mention (non-folder) would be Mora. For the money, it's hands down the best utility, skinning, woodcarving blades I have used. I buy Mora knives from Amos Outdoors exclusively due to their excellent, professional and timely service.
buck, victorinox, and most recently kershaw. just got my first one, a scallion with a half-serrated blade. my dad got an oso sweet at the same time, yet i like it less because it it made in china. but as of right now, benchmade makes the best factory knives hands down.
for money and quality so far its the kershaw made in america..... close 2nd spyderco wish it was made in america.. cant beat the tenacious for under $30...
The RAT-1 is cheaper or has the same price as the Tenacious, don't know exactly for what you can get it. But for me, it was cheaper than the Tenacious. It's more rugged, has better finish and I like the blade also more. ;)
I'm liking my Spyderco Knives, you cant beat a time proven knife. But have a couple CRKT's that I do enjoy also. Love there designs, and non traditional approach to the pocket knife. I carry a CRKT peck as a money clip. Sharp as heck, and always on me.
Not sure I can weigh in on this, but Buck seems to be able to hold their own! The Bantam and Vantage knives seem to be an excellent and affordable option.
Favorite, most affordable knife i've owned : Kershaw Blur. outstanding. I've owned two SOG's and need to give them love too. The "blink" is a great EDC. would like to get my hands on that multicam aegis you had though. How much did you pay for that?
Can't say which is best, but I've had a couple cheapos that destructed fast - the all time worst was a 'smith & wesson' labeled knife that lasted two days ... got it for fifteen dollars back in 2002. My favorite is an Osbourne Design commissioned by the NRA - a Benchmade Goucho. I've carried it in my pocket for four years now. I love it.
SPYDERCO! no question. with $20 knives to $500 knives, every kind of locking mechs, all the handle styles, blade materials. & no one can touch the customer service that spyderco is putting out. i'll always be a spydie fan.
My choice is kershaw as well........ they are great quality and they have great prices. I never had to deal with customer service because out the box the knife is solid and sharp so I never had any problems so never contacted customer service. Every kershaw I had made me bleed so people need to respect the knife and not treat it like a dull POS lol yenz out hahahahah
VERY tough call. If you're talking folders, the Zero Tolerance 300 series (Kershaw) are MONSTERS in terms of what you get for your money....but so are some Benchmades and Spydercos....tough one bro.
I totally agree, for the money, Kershaw. I actually use my knife everyday and if I were to break my Kershaw somehow I would be bummed out but they are affordable enough to go out and buy a new Kershaw. Thumbs UP!!
Value for your dollar I'd probably give to kershaw or boker. Both have really cool designers come in and produce good work. Emerson, strider, and Chris reeve are just phenomenal if you have the coin, but price is a factor. I think you'd be hard pressed, however, not to give it to Spyderco in the end. Bang for your buck, I just don't see better. I think people can loose sight of overall value when bogged down in issues that for the most part doesn't pertain to them(Type of steel for instance)
overall...spyderco its been that way for years if your talking overall company spyderco hands down, now that being said some companies put out a great model here and there...but with the literaly thousands of knives that went through my hands over the years spyderco has let me down the least...
Fixed blades, love my KA-BARs. Still don't have a ton of experience with folders, owned a couple but I honestly cannot even remember who made them (been years since I had a folder). Been looking at Spydies, Kershaws, and Benchmades, but I like the looks, and the fact that Kershaws are made in the USA the most so far. We'll see what I end up grabbing when I get the chance.
for folders i like Chris Reeve Knives and Spyderco. for fixed blades i like ESEE knives. but i have others that i like, kershaw makes a great knife. and i will be trying out other manufactures in the near future. such as lionsteel.
Why does everyone like spyderco so much? I havent heard of anyone using them for bushcrafting or hunting. And the tenacious all I hear about is how it opens up and cuts everyone. Im not saying theyre bad but im just wondering.
#1 EMERSON... no issues, owned 9 of them. USA made
#2 Kershaw/Zero Tolerance ... Great values, but some odd clips, USA made
Liking the CASE, BUCKs. CANAL STREETs & Striders that I've bought too, also USA made. Spyderco is nice also, love the Milie and other USA made ones. Hate their new wire clip everyone else seems to love. Had some issues with my Benchmades even though some are my favorites. Of the "imports", only cheap Boker Plus CLBs and Victorinox seem to make it into my house anymore.
In my experience, Quality: Benchmade > Kershaw > Victorinox > Spyderco > SOG > CRKT. Value: Spyderco and Kershaw. Overall Functionality, quality, choices and value Spyderco wins for me
For fit, finish, warranty service, overall build quality and value for the buck, my choice is Kershaw. Even the knives they have made in China are well made, at least the ones I've had experience with.
Kershaw for value and customer service, Spyderco for quality, design, and functionality. Victorinox is good too, but not my favorite. CRKT isn't bad either.
Id say if we're talking about this level of knife then Kershaw has the overall best product. I love my Spyderco's but I still feel that the overall product itself is being done best by Kershaw. As stated in the beginning, I cant speak for high end blade makers due to lack of use in my part.
Hey man, great topic. I'm with you man, it's hard to beat the quality and value of a Kershaw! They do it right with their 20-50 dollar knives. I absolutely love their stuff!
Case probably has the best quality and best old school knives all case knives are made in usa,you don't always need fast opening, but spyderco is awesome, spyderco probably has the the best opening speed for a manual knife, and kershaw is a great company too.
will just to put a comment on his page i have a kershaw like the blue one he and it grate but if could have what i call a good knife but do not own one yet it would be the SPYDERCO MILITARY!!!!!!
I would have to say either SOG or Kershaw!! I bought a SOG for my buddy as a gift and he seems to love it, I carry a Kershaw Ken Onion, I love that damn knife...Its built to last!!! Great vid man!!!
For all their faults, Benchmade makes knives of consistently hight quality at fair prices, and the Axis lock is absolutely the best. Spyderco is excellent, but you have to love the Spyder Hole to love Spyderco, and I just don't. Buck is always Buck, but not fully up to speed in 2011. SOG makes good knives, but for under $100 you get junk with "SOG" written all over it. Kershaw makes great blades, in the US, but they hate lefties, of whom I am one. Winner: *sigh* Benchmade, as always.
