The name "Virtual Boy" does suggest "virtual reality" which was still a popular (and even novel) concept at the time - but this was also about the same time that people were realizing that 1st-person perspective doesn't necessarily make for good gaming - particularly given the narrow field of vision offered by gaming displays (even now) and the need to have a strong sense of where your character is in relation to other things. You can see this in a lot of N64 titles as well.

That boxing game reminds me of the first boss on an obscure PS2 game I have called I-Ninja. You get in to a huge robot thing and have a boxing match with another. Looks just like that. The screen even gets smashed when you get hit too. I-Ninja was a really great game.

I think the Virtual Boy was a great idea, and could have been great as well. The first problem was that it was rushed. Having an only red screen wasn't that big of a flaw, but the fact that you had a bad screen on a system you could barely wear really ruined it. If they at least developed a strap for it.

The other problem was the games, like you have said, don't even attempt to be virtual reality. If only they brought some first person fighters and shooters, the system would have been better.

He was made to be a villain for Mario in the early days, then he went out and became the hero in his own series of games (Wario Land 3 imho is one of the best games on the GBC), but since then has pretty much just been an extra in Mario Party or Mario Kart.......etc. I'm just saying the character could have been used in different ways, that's all.
