Super Mario 64 actually has the same number of red coin missions as this game, yes I counted, there are 23 in both games it's just that in Mario 64 they're more spread out so it seems like there are fewer.

You actually never have to climb the tall tree in the middle. If you go up the tree near the hot tub you can triple jump and hover all the way to the leaves on the middle tree.
