Ditto on Stu's crackalackin snare. It's not uncommon for today's music, but for 80's music it's extremely unusual. Every stupid producer in the 80's insisted that the snare drum should sound like a floor tom with a hint of snares on the bottom of it. I hated it. I was so glad when the 90's got a clue and introduced the piccolo snare to modern pop music. Hence, I crank my snare up so tight it's totally smackalicious!
@ghostinthemachine44 although copeland is the drummer, I do believe he wrote the music for several Police songs such as Miss Gradenko and Does Everybody Stare. The guy did compose several albums on his own, after all.
The way the song uses Copeland's guitar riffs is wicked. Underrated top tune. I've always loved the Police's stuff and I'm black! They transcend all racial barriers, and I think, one of the finest bands in the world> Rock on! From London
brother you are correct! i have been a fan since waking up one late night and the video for 'walking on the moon' was playing. i guess i was maybe 13 or 14. LOVE the police.....
people really like their rock/pop music to have some significant message, some authentic sensibilities, and still to rock -- the Police were that band for some years - their attitude was New Wave, very much the wounded cynical idealists - that was protest music for the 80's. They handed off their crown to U2 eventually, but the Police were big in their prime, for good reason.
The Police are a band of the 20th century that is special....other than the Beatles, they did some very very cool music. Turned it up as loud as possible back then. I'm a Black guy in his early 40's and they opened my mind to music other than R&B and Hip-Hop.
@oliviaethan Hey, Eddie Murphy was singing Roxane back in the 48 hours day. Sting has soul, that's why you connected with his sound. It's like Louis Armstrong said; "If it sounds good...it is good"!
@oliviaethan i agree with you sir. the police are very special . you cant find music this good nowadays. sting has soul and the music is bass-heavy. i love it. i cant get enough of it. im a white guy, for whatever that is worth
@bogalusa5 I remember echoing this sentiment when this song was out, as the food in the hall of residence where I lived then was pretty awful. On pork chops night, for example, the local chippy served at least 36 people from that hall.
"Fist of Legend" is one of my favorite movies. One of the few Kung Fu movies with solid character development. For other movies involving the Japanese invasion of China see "Ip Man" with Donnie Yen in his largest role yet.
I fucking HATE the Police, but I heard this song on the radio at work today and I was fucking blown away by it. Came home and googled the lyrics; had no idea it was the Police!
Make the best of whats still around. This should be our governments new national anthem. I vote for the Sting for President and coincidentally that should be fairly easy considering this already a police state. lol
Listened to Zenyatta on my mom's vinyl in the 80's and she calls me the other day and she heard this song on an 80's station and I had to tell her who sang it and send her the song on digital. Weird to think that she had the albums but I knew more about the Police. This music is timeless and my kids will be listening to it someday.
@CriminalPsycho it only pokes at a "gook" if thats what you want it to be. I see it as them showing of their crazy moves and fighting against the forced oppression that japan put on the tibetan people.
