Although the Icicle Works were never my favourite band, their first LP made a strong impression on me. One highlight was the lyrics from this track 'You are what you are.....you are what you know you are' just at the time in my life when I most needed to hear them.
OMG where did you get this from whover put it on? I am in the crowd there! I've never seen the tape, went cos my neighbour was a friend of the drummer, used to go to all their gigs after this was good mates with C Laye used to see him in his music shop and he'd get us free tickets.

This was on Granada and i have the whole half hour on vhs tape and will have to load some more of this up. It was their first TV appearance as far as I know on a very wet lunch time outside St Nicholas's church near the Pier Head in Liverpool. The gardens was most recently used as part of the Liverpool Nativity on BBC in 2008. Drummer Chris Sharrock went in to perform as Robbie Williams drummer and then as part of Oasis - he is currently working with Noel Gallagher on a new project.
Splendid. Starts off kind of fuzzy and clunky, but the lads manage to sculpt into an enchanting bit of neo-psychedelia by the time the song wraps up. Critics, at least in the states, had a grudge against these guys. They wanted their precious sixties back, and when 3 kids from Liverpool actually did it, the critics seemed to take it as a threat!
How could this be any better? It makes me feel that I am in love with everyone. I almost feel young again. McNabb can sing a cliche like "You are what you are" and make it sound profound.
Just watched this again. One of the best Icies songs ever but don't the audience of old age pensioners and young scallies look bemused? Philistines, the lot of them....
Amazing. A very youthfull mcnabb plays open chords on his guitar with one hand and keyboard parts with the other while singing. If he stuck a brush up his arse, he could have cleaned the stage at the same time!
eyem drawn back to this. boots looks even younger than chris sharrock on this. quite an achievement. other chris looks like your aunty dolled up for bingo.
Weird! I remember being there, 15 yrs old, on the right of 3 lads at the back, me in adidas cagoul and Rowan brothers to my left, one in blue and one in brown stanley jackets! Boss days!
Wow..Icicle Works live? Amazing!! Never seen this before! That first album was brilliant, one of my most favorite of the era..thanks for the post! Very cool..

Quite a treasure. Loved this band -- never understood why they didn't chart better.
