Ameche was able to play as a freshman because freshman could play without restriction so after the 4th game of his freshman year he was bumped to varsity. My father played freshman football so his yardage didn't count which is why Ameche amassed more yardage. He was GOOD but he WAS NOT THE FIRST 1000 YARD RUSHER!
