He didn't die instantly. If you look closely at the picture of him on the stretcher, he has an airbag strapped to his mouth and one of the attendants is squeezing it. He was brain dead but they kept his heart beating and him breathing so the family could say goodbye.

Yes...He was the first car airborne, followed very closely by Pippa Mann and then Will Power. I have never seen an accident when 2 cars became airborne, let alone 3!

@JohnnyRock2000 Something broke on what looks to be the rear suspension, which would explain him seeming to suddenly spear straight off. If you look closely you can see sparks from the rear of the car just as he begins to head straight for the wall.
is it not a no brainer, to add a roll cage like what a top fuel dragster has or a supermodified, they could go back to ovals no problem if they had the roll cage, drivers head is protected, alot of problems solved
@TOPGUNCANADA00 as genius as that sounds at first, think about it. Dan had to have hit the fencing around 150mph, if not more, head first. And that's after his roll bar was crushed from hitting the pavement. Even with a roll cage, I still can't see our friend surviving that crash. There's not a whole lot that can be done with the cockpit, if anything. The fencing needs to be evaluated though. Rest in peace, my friend, must be fun with Greg Moore, Senna and the rest up there.
@TOPGUNCANADA00 Their heads are protected. They are measuirng that when the car is upside down it will lie on its nose and the air intake above the driver. Saw a seatfitment for Button not that long ago, but can't seem to find it right now.
@TOPGUNCANADA00 There is a steel bar looped above and behind the drivers head that prevents the car from smashing the driver's head in case of a roll over. It's substantial and part of the tub.

@ThreexxSum dont be a dick. the best thing about crashes in indy car racing - or in any motorsport racing - is when the driver walks away from it alive. when he dies it takes a huge blow out of motorsport. just think about that before you tipe next time

@JohnnyRock2000 Something broke on what looks to be the rear suspension, which would explain him seeming to suddenly spear straight off. If you look closely you can see sparks from the rear of the car just as he begins to head straight for the wall.

is it not a no brainer, to add a roll cage like what a top fuel dragster has or a supermodified, they could go back to ovals no problem if they had the roll cage, drivers head is protected, alot of problems solved

@TOPGUNCANADA00 as genius as that sounds at first, think about it. Dan had to have hit the fencing around 150mph, if not more, head first. And that's after his roll bar was crushed from hitting the pavement. Even with a roll cage, I still can't see our friend surviving that crash. There's not a whole lot that can be done with the cockpit, if anything. The fencing needs to be evaluated though. Rest in peace, my friend, must be fun with Greg Moore, Senna and the rest up there.

@TOPGUNCANADA00 Their heads are protected. They are measuirng that when the car is upside down it will lie on its nose and the air intake above the driver. Saw a seatfitment for Button not that long ago, but can't seem to find it right now.

@TOPGUNCANADA00 There is a steel bar looped above and behind the drivers head that prevents the car from smashing the driver's head in case of a roll over. It's substantial and part of the tub.

@TOPGUNCANADA00 They can go back to ovals anyway. I hate people like you who ignore an driver who has yet to be be successful but when a champion like Dan dies - OMG DON'T RACE ON OVALS. In 102 years only 1 person has ever died because of thei'r head hitting a catch fencing. Out of 102 years only 2 people have died because their head hit anything. think about what you're typing and the respect you're showing Wheldon but the ingorance you're showing Tony Renna and Paul Dana. RIP to all 3.

@TOPGUNCANADA00 How can you say I don't know anything about racing. I know enough to make my point, and I don't like the idea of rollcages on their head. OH NO! A FIRE! LETS GET OUT! Oh wait there's a frickin' rollcage in the way. Lets climb out, and end up with burns on my legs. Plus, the roll hoop protects their head in a flip, and I only know 3 cases of people being hit by stuff which caused serious/fatal injury in motorsport. 2 were in 2009 and 1 was in 1961. Plus a tyre could smash a cage.

@TOPGUNCANADA00 And a roll cage would be ripped to peices by catch fencing. Dan Wheldon couldn't of survived. Watch Conway's car in his 2010 crash and think about a roll cage. No chance. Dan Wheldon died doing what he loved and died a champion, so he achieved at what he loved.

indycar has been on ovals for 100 years. the fact that theyre ovals isnt the issue. its the high bankings where they can run flat all the way around. they really dont race on very many of those, and have quit racing at some. like michigan, and theyve been racing there since the 60s
