As an American trying to learn about rugby football, I find both codes to be ineresting and fun to watch, and I see characteristics of my beloved American football in both.
league repetitive? anybody watch the last 5 minutes of the first half of Scotland v England, Scotlands forwards going sideways across the pitch and back again several times? And what about this stupid standing there with the ball on the ground nobody touching it for 5 minutes, called a ruck if I remember from my playing days, should be a 10 second rule, use it or lose it. As said below, both have their advantages, and should be appreciated for their respective strengths.
"I have said for 20 years if Rugby Union wants to compete with other high entertainment sports all it has to do is make the pitch 10m wider. Also get rid of scrums, they are a blight on the game. Its a complete waste of entertainment time when they reset another ego driven caveman monstrosity. Former Australian RU kicking coach Ben Perkins
I see a lot of people complaining about the scrums in rugby league. The reason league went with uncontested scrums because contested scrums were too dangerous back in the day. In union, scrums were uncontested if u look closely. Union scrums were dangerous too and that's why they went to that crouch, touch, pause, engage step to make sure players don't get hurt. If the front row put their heads in the ground during the scrum, they messed it up and have to do it again.
Not even an argument LEAGUE ALL THE WAY, union has substandard refereeing. They let three out of four knock-ons go. League has more speed, fitness all around ability. But I think the proof is in the stat that the ball is in play 93% of the game as oppose to 58% in union.
Nuff said you union southern soft shandy drinkin bastards
@MegaBILLYBALLBAG Far less than 58%. The IRB puts it at between 42 - 48% noted in six nation competitions, In Australia an average of 28 mins has been noted in super 14 competition. That's an awful lot of nothing going on in a Union game.
Essentially if you like kicks, rucks, mauls and scrums watch Union. If you like Passing, positional understanding, running with the ball in hand, impact tackling and tries watch League.
Essentially. League is a much more physical game. But its quite dull. Its too repetatve. You cant really get a set play going, you cant really get much change. Its a bit too much of a Battering ram game. Union has alot more Technical details to it!
I'm a flanker so its a lot more fun for people like me!
League is the same pattern the whole 80mins. Rugby is so unpredictable it makes you rip the couches to bits. League claims they are fitter but Rugby does not have interchange. Your out on the grid for the whole 80 boy! League claims they have more athleticism, but that's because there's holes everywhere in League for you to exploit. In Rugby there's sweeping defense or secondary line and tacklers coming from all angles. League converts struggle to break Rugby D-Lines!....No gaps here chap.
@miguel3566 "No gaps here chap". I love it. As a proponent of Union you announce that with such pride. "You're on the grid for the full 80 boy" another classic. But wait! Whats this? Union only averages 28 mins of play per game. OMG! What do you do for the other 52 mins? Read a book? Knit a jumper? Master hyperbole? Dear oh dear! sounds pretty pathetic to me. "Union for 65% of the match, nothing to see here". You revel in tedium, claim skill but show only a dull, poor contest.
Come on guys don't brag about the other codes, I love both codes and both have their own way of play and style and strategies. League is fast paced and you have to be very fast to play the code, while union is just like a fight for the ball. Rugby union and league all the way.
Look, i much prefer leauge, i find it more exciting, more physical and faster pace.
The game is about running, and tackling, and getting that Try. Union i find annoying, because all you seem to see now is penalty goals. Union defence is rubish. A player makes a small break, and not even 5 defenders get him. League is much more faster and physical, and harder to play. The hits are huge, the players get smahed in the face, stand back up and keep on going, i love that. They are both good but RLwins
@shaveyourfingers both are fun to watch too and did you know only in Australia that league fans go to union games and check what's going on in that code?
@OBJones28 Hey dude, Im not sure what you're tryin to say?? Im a New Zealander, Aussies are our neighbours. Ive played both codes and continue to go and see live games of both codes. Love league and Union. Go the MIGHTY WARRIORS!!!! and go the ALL BLACKS!!!
im sorry but all union has over league is brains, not gonna lie you are far smarter in promoting the sport e.t.c. which is why it is played by far more countries. however union is so far behind league its untrue, the youth scouting system is shocking the coaching is terrible and basic core skills are ridiculously poor. in union you have some players who can handle a ball i.e. catch and pass, in league you have ball playing props who can pass, overall league players are all round skilled.
@leexgx <<<holy shit this is the stupidest comment ever!!
like read your post again mate. a union prop tackles, carries, works in the lineout and scrumtime and has to ruck. all a league prop does is run and tackle. the scrum and lineout in league is a joke. union backs have to be able to run, kick, field, ruck, tackle and even get their position when being tackled properly
league backs just run, tackle, field, and one lad normally does all the kicking. union has far greater skill sets!!!
@IrishDub18 I agree, rugby league scrums used to be competitive and league does the kicking too. In union, you have to released the ball immediately after you get tackled or you will be called for a penalty. I like both codes and both have their own strategies and tactics. League is pretty fast and tough while union is tactical and tough. lol
@leexgx <<<holy shit this is the stupidest comment ever!!

@MinkBomb League .... scrum ???? try standing group hug , where the ball is then rolled into the 2nd row! In Union the scrum can be used as an attacking tactical part of the game. Only point of a so called League scrum is for the forwards to compare who has the worst B.O.
sorry, i played rugby a loong time ago. i wasn't aware there were 2 types of rugby. so what type do they play in the world cup? and when did this start? and are these happening in all countries? confused.
Both are great games, it's only predictable idiots that try to suggest one is vastly superior to another. They both require enormous strength, skill and dedication.
I come from the south and therefore played Union at a young age. Having played League at an older age, I found it much more demanding and tough on the body. Personally speaking, Union is better as an International sport, League is better as a club game. Now let's move on.
@IamHeisenberg sorry id have to disagree with you becuase anyone with a functional body can play union decent enough so id say that is better for clubs. while league requires a higher physical demand and only reason union is bigger is because it has been around longer. and im not trying to offend anyone but i duno about playing to sport but league is the better spectacle sport
@Thetacticalcorner No moves in League? Are you fucking stupid? I've played RU and RL at decent amateur levels and only been shown a handful of moves in RU. Every RL team has dozens of moves with different aims - defence misdirection, angled runners, crash balls, etc, etc. All involve dummy runners, angles, impeccable timing and ball skills. RU is for kickers, unfit forwards, and backs who don't like to get too involved and is mind-numbingly boring to watch and play. RL is vicious and demanding.
Look, many union fans say that union is a much more physicall sport? Well, every single player that left union and went to league said: "League is much faster, harder and in terms of hits league hurts much more."
Union scrum is much better, but the game is so scrappy, players make a small break and not one defender is fast enough to catch them......and most of union points are scored from fucking penalty kicks.....
wow, clearly league is alot more skillful and more speed involved but union is alot more physical, i mean come on the scrum half is like a prop? I play both and enjoy both! get along u fukwits ;)
@terrortorn alright alright, but did you read my comment? maybe your replying to the wrong comment. i didnt say union was faster, ive been saying pretty much the complete opposite.
union is a school standard game that extoles the virtues of falling on the floor, turning your back to the opposition and dropping the ball. an unevolved game that has no room to manouver in development as proper rugby got there 100 years before. rugby union a complete triumph of style and class association over content. only in rugby union can hoofing the ball straight into the crowd be considered a skill. there are good reasons we call it kick and clap.
@Thetacticalcorner respect for rules hahahaha people staping on heads you score 90 percent of your points through penalty kicks?union is for fat overweight posh twats who have a retired rugby league player as a defence coach
Rugby is far more difficult tactically and when it breaks down they revert to the forwards going a meter at a time. The players are much bigger and stronger and the backs much faster than in league. The kickers are much...much better in union aswell .
@brownballs100 are u fucking serious? the backs are slow fat cunts in rugby union and please tell me why the full backs kick to 1 another for about a third of the game and also can u please tell me why you games at least 2-3 a week dont score a try. what your saying is tottaly crap the forwards in union weigh 20-24 stone and have massive bellys even you with your union specs can see that 1 thing i agree is kickers are better
I dont know which games of rugby you are watching but a full backs job is to clear the line when he is under pressure. All the fowrads in my previous teams have had less tan 9 % body fat , thats including the front row. Even at age group level our fowards still had to squat double their weight s and bench double their weights. In Rugby i play wing and in league i played centre , unions a lot harder to play.
@brownballs100 i dont know which teams you have been playing in must be a super team because if you would watch the games on tele you would realise that the forwards not all i mite add are very slow and over weight, and yeah i understand the job for the full back is to relieve pressure but this doesnt mean he has to kick it all the time.

rugby league produces far more entertaining matchs even though it has a more direct style with less room for variation. it is more fast paced. players seem to have superior spatial awareness, ability to put balls into holes, running angles.
its more simplified than union but the core skills of passing tackling and at the very least 'attacking kicking' aspects of the games look better than those of union.
@The20473as how can you possibly consider union faster. the headmaster, sorry referee in union has so many technical fouls to choose from when any play is ongoing union rarely has 30 seconds of unbroken play. league is the evolution of rugby designed to be played by men and watched by a paying audience. union is still a thugish free for all bound by the fact that rugby league initiated all the worthwhile game changes from 1895 onward.
Only posh twats think you have to be intelligent to play union, but it's simply not true. What aspects of the game require intelligence? None, the scrums don't, the lineouts don't, the kicking game of league is more tactical and skilful than union, and the general play of league is a lot faster, so you have to think faster. To play union you don't have to be intelligent, you have to be gay.
@Dr84S its faster?? u stop when someone gets tackled its not faster at all we have offloads pick and goes its a lot faster plus we dont have 2 give the ball up after 5 tackles
Rugby union is so fukkin boring becoz of too many scrums and confusing rules. Union is really tough to follow.
Rugby league is a easy game to follow because of its speed, physical, and fast play. I love the six tackle rule (similar to the American football four tackles and Candian football 3 tackles). The scrums are used to be competitive, but league put the safer scrum they are using today to get their own identity.
@OBJones28 You really didn't have to put that last part (From an American). You are basically saying that you enjoy sports that require no creativity or intelligence whatsoever. Union is not complicated, but it takes brains, something you NFL-loving Americans clearly are in short supply of.
@elbriano1000 Union is growing quick in America, but union sucks anyway. It puts me to sleep very quickly like watch a EPL match. Rugby league is more entertaining than union because of its fast pace action. Rugby league will be back on the map. The main reason why people saying union is better than league is because it is spreading across the globe to new countries. The only main thing union has is the French Top 14 and the Heineken Cup.
@OBJones28 sike the southern teir is so much better then the north. rugby league are just union want a bees. the average size is most league players as as tall as scrumhalfs. union is the real sport there is a reason it is more popular
@OBJones28 You ignored my comment completely. I don't care which is growing faster in the states. I am saying that it is a fact that union requires more well roundness, intelligence, and skill. This is an irrefutable fact. League takes no brains and is almost as boring to watch as stupid NFL (4 seconds of play, then 30 seconds of rest, and only the man with the ball has to think), league's not quite that bad though.
@elbriano1000 League too required the same as union but it requires speed and u have to be quick to play league. Gareth Thomas switched from union to league and he got used to the speed and hits of league. When a player switch from league to union and if he wants to play forward, it is gonna to be hard for a former league to learn playing forward in rugby union. Rugby League, the greatest game of all.
@OBJones28 Ok, you're just ignoring my points. I never said i hate league, the speed and athleticism shown by players on the 5th tackle is sometimes exciting but overall i find it quite boring. You obviously have no rebuttal for the point that league takes no intelligence to play, because none exist. Rommenljnr said it perfectly. If you dont have a brain, play league.
@elbriano1000 well, u like union, a game that is played in South England. I enjoyed cricket and Aussie footy also. Rugby union still has a long way to go to catch league, but I keep on seeing league players switching to union every since the game turned pro in '95. Some union players are switching to league too.
@OBJones28 Alright, well i can see there's no changing your mind, and you wont change my mind either. Let's just both agree that any kind of rugby is awesome?
@elbriano1000 hehe, rugby league is mainly popular in North England and Eastern Australia (New South Wales and Queensland). League still has a long way to go and when union turned pro in '95, league starting losing players to union and if Benji Marshall switches from league to union, it will be a shocker.
@elbriano1000 haha league players dont have a brain.. listen to urself mate. league players have to make far more decisions than union players and in a shorted space of time due to the amout of attacking and defensive sets, union barely play the game of rugby anyway, you only have about 30 minutes of rugby in a whole match.. wonder where the the other 50 minutes have gone ? probably kicking the ball out into touch and wasting time watching scrums collapse 3 times on every attempt, union is shit
People who say that league is one dimensional don't really understand the sport. Union has less dimensions than league like when they kick it back to each other for five minutes at a time tedious. The scrums are pointless but they take 20 minutes a match, them retard throw ins, no skill to it. Some players in union never touch the ball, each team has to have them little fat players who coincidently have to take "lineouts". Why can't a thinner player throw it in for a change. The intellectual ga
union- barely any big hits, spends far too much time on scrums which is boring, kick the ball back and forth like a fucking tennis match. look at the rugby league players that have come over to union , they dominate, robinson.. ashton... sonny bill.......
league- better game as its faster, bigger hits( check out the rugbyleague hits on youtube and see for yourself) , better at defence, better at attack ,better standard.. watch state of origin. origin is the best standard of origin u will c.
@bulls1234567890 This is league... He gets the ball runs three metres, gets tackled, dry humps the shit out of the grass, bends over infront of his team mate who then picks the ball up and passes it to the biggest man on his team to repeat the proccess, my god this game is exciting! and if union playerz went to league (which they dont cos they rnt retards) they would fucking smash anyway. Im sorry but chody jamie soward would get smashed if he played union against a team like the all blacks.
@thecallan008 hahaha wake up,,jamie soward would rip union up mate.. take a few minutes of your time to check these vids 1.)" benji marshal 15 minutes of mayhem " 2.) NRL big hits 2011 etc..
let the footage do the talking ! league shits all over union.
@bulls1234567890 Hahahaha Jamie Soward?!?! Isnt he the short little chody guy. Guys like Jaque Fourie and James O Connor would tear him up. As for marshall he mite do orite. His little sidestep things that he does wont last long though. I would be suprised if marshall made the bench for the AllBlacks. Dan Carter is simply a class above.
@thecallan008 jamie soward.. so he's shit coz he little yea? then u dont have a clue about rugby, u dont have to be 6ft 4 to be a stand off ! look at rob burrow for an example. soward would rip union up guarantee. and for marshall, and for marshal vs carter, no brainer for me . marshal. dan carter is a decent player i wil admit but i think marshal is something special. his step wont last long ? he's been doing it in the NRL for years and the NRL's defence is the best in any code.
@bulls1234567890 Yes size does matter in rugby. I dont care what if people think otherwise. Skill counts aswell but size does have a factor. Just look at Jonah Lomu..... Marshall only looks good because he is in league which has a small pool of talent. Dan Carter is competing to be the best fly half against Jonny Wilkinson, Matt Giteau, Morne Steyn etc.
@bulls1234567890 I disagree with how you say the nrl has the best defence out of both codes. I agree that their upfront tackling is in most cases better, but thats only because league is so predictable. You know for the first 4 runs or so their just going to pass it to some huge guy like sam thaiday. You also know when they are going to kick so you can prepare. In Union you have to read the play, you need to judge whether to stay back and catch the kick or move up in defence etc.
@thecallan008 not every attacking set it like that , it all depends on your field position, if ur deep in your own half then yes , u need the big lads taking it up and a big kick to get the ball deep in the opposition half, on the other hand if u start the set in the opposition half then you can expect to see alot of attacking plays from the backs... in league we dont have mauls rucks lineouts etc, its only attack and defence and it shows as our attacking skills and defence is 10x better.
I play union and love watching it but for some reason league seems more interesting to watch now i guess im growing tired of constant scrum resets and kicking, but still either code is much better than football
@mikdalton well said. oh yes i agree. im a league man but im not gonna be another of those league players who say oh union boys (i think u call eachother chaps or guys) have no courage JUST cos they afraid to take the ball up n get smashed. Union players got courage too ok. i mean would a league player seriously have the courage- the raw courage- to bend over treatment table after a game n let a grown man slide the old love length in his anus then ride him like seabiscuit??
league is a joke, they didnt even sell out their world cup grand final at suncorp in 08?? its funny how league supporters actually think the world favours league over union. sonny bill even said it league is jsut a crash and bash game, union is alot more tactical and actually have kickers who dont miss from outfront 30m out like johnithen thruston did state of origin, so league supporters, please dont try rubbish a game tht is obviously superior to league
@Stinso93 union is quite a joke to it has to many rules and i find the game stopping so often that im just standing around catching my breath. i play a wing and the ball usally gets to the outside then something is called and we reset the line which means the wing who is supposed to be the lead scorer' in the game barely gets the ball to begin with where as in league i noticed i get the ball alot more and its alot more fast paced
@striker343 yeah i play league but i find union waaaaay harder. Winger is the worst position to play in union youll only touch the ball like 4 times a game especially if you have greedy centres. But union you cant rest you have to get to the breakdowns blow overs next break down and you cant slack. League you already know whats guna happen they run it up and then on the 5th tackle theyll kick its the same thing over and over but union you never know whats guna happen
@striker343 agreed, I've watched union and it is so fukkin confusing because it is so tough to learn. The reason why people are saying that union is better than league is because union is spreading around the union. They don't know the laws of rugby union and it is so many to learn. Rugby league is a easy code to follow. League all the way. Fukk rugby union!!!
Hey im a rugby union player and I love it but I played my first league game today and its awesome. Ill aways be a union guy but I mean with Union and league seasons generally being apart for my level I am definitly playing both. There's no point arguing which is better, it clearly just comes down to preference, pride and where you come from. Both awesome.
If you love rugby you just do......It is a way of life! only sad people argue which code is superior, my preference is and always has been Union, it is a far more tactical game and depends on the opposition and exploiting their weaknesses, the fitness level is the same in both codes but I prefer the continual play and fluidity of Union, the game doesnt stop and restart at the tackle. If you prefer one to the other that doesn't mean you have to diss the other......

Sorry, I was watching the super league earlier today and I personally think it bores me so much. To much stop start, stop start and there is hardly any contact other than the tackles, which they get about 3 people to tackle one guy, then the tackled player does a spas dance on the floor! Also there is no way you can win the ball if the opposition have it because there are no rucks or mauls (turnovers). It just bores me and union is a faster paced game, feel free to disagree, but union is a bigg
@AndyHimself how so? u guys dont push in the scrum.. all the teams have the same tatics... its boring because you know the games is going to be the same every time you watch it!
Mate, their's nothing really complex about either game if you've played it all your life unless your a dumb/ shit cunt. League is harder physically cos dudes have ten meters to build up speed when they run at you, getting back on side is way harder and fuckers sholder-charge the fuck out of you. Disagree??? Watch a "state of origin" game.
People that say union is a thinking mans game and league isn't, don't know shit about rugby league.
@mOs4114 dude league is dumb... every body has the same tactics... let me tell you how league goes pass to a foward charge at a dude until you reach 4 or 5 then do punt or when they get close to the try line they get the ball out wide until the 5th then kick again... same shit for every team and every game... and wats the point of having scrum wen u dont push? union has more variety in its game plus it is quicker because we dont stop when i guy gets tackled we fight for the ball constantly.
@mOs4114 Im sorry but league is certainly not harder physically than union. watch a union scrum its like, touch pasue engage... BOOM! league is friken soft. Im also sorry to say but you need to be a lot tougher in union. If jamie soward went to union he wouldnt make it. He is just too small, too soft, too short, too fat and way too chody.
I played Rugby Union in college, but recently I have found myself watching and actually enjoying both League and Union. Its just like someone liking both normal American Football and Arena Football. Don't give me shit bout talking bout Football here, I am American sadly :(
@scottbailey101 is that the guy that plays for england? if so... so what he is playing against teams and countries that are boring and crap just plays against south africa aus, and nzl
@scottbailey101 he is not even close to being the best winger in the world, let alone in the history of union. That is not an argument for league being better that union
@pfl95 Simply I would say, no line-outs, lineouts are replaced by scrums.
Scoring is bit different.
Union game starts with drop-off, league - kick-off (ball placed on cone like in american football).
Positions work a bit different, everyone can play as back.
6 tackle rule, like in touch rugby, where you have to tag opposite player 6 times then balls is given to your team, instead of tagging, there is tackling. Also roll-ball is taken from touch rugby after player gets tackled, no rucks, mauls.
Matt Rogers, Wendell Sailor, Brad Thorn, Sonnybill Williams, Ray Price, Michael O'Connor are not the best or ever were in rugby union. They wont even rank in the top 100 best rugby union players ever.
@Rommeljnr Really? Where have you been getting your defensive patterns from the last few years? Where are most of your defensive coaches from?
R.U is for fat lads who aren't athletic or hard enough to play league. Doesn't the scrum exist to give lazy fat cunts a chance to justify their position?
@LunchtimeLoonies Exactly the kind of clueless arguement you would expect from a lowbrow knuckle dragging meathead league fan. And funny you should pick on the scrum in Union.. at least we have a real f-ing scrum not like league ... just basically standing there in a group hug while the ball is rolled in to the 2nd row !!! And is it Union players that are always in the shit for getting drunk and acting like animals or is it Thugby League players ??? League=Rugby for meatheads and thugs.
@Rommeljnr Just because you aren't a very good R.U player there is no need to bash the highly skilled players of league.
You cannot comment because you have never played before. Get your wobbly cheeks down to a league club and prolong your lifeline! Being a prop is no excuse to be a fat cunt.
@LunchtimeLoonies Congratulations .. first sign of a weak intellect Thugby fan is resorting to insults. As for me not being a very good REAL Rugby player . 6 years of 1st grade in Queensland, Australia before joining the Royal Australian Navy and making the Navy squad.
@Rommeljnr Yawn. I truly believe you have never played league...otherwise you'd know it is a much tougher sport. I play union now because I only have a few games left and can't handle league anymore.
Before you ask what position...I play hooker in league and play openside in union (yawnion).
@LunchtimeLoonies I would suggest before making more posts which highlight your ingnorance do some history of the codes and why there are 2. The poorer working class R.U clubs couldnt compete with the richer ones, so broke away to form there own comp and over the years have dumbed down the game for the low brows that play it and watch it. Intial rules for League where same as union and have dumbed it down. B.S. scrums, No lineout, No maul ,all so the mindless meatheads can play and watch.
@Rommeljnr O.K. It is obvious you have never played league and are an armchair viewer of union. You don't need to explain any history to someone who has played both codes for 20 years. The Northern clubs broke away because they needed to be compensated for missing work whilts playing. Even a numpty like you should be able to research the devastating impact this had on Englands (union) record after the split. The clubs in the North were much stronger.
@Rommeljnr Mauls are ultra boring....lineouts are good but mostly lead to mauls. the scrum is good but not when it is reset over and over. I suggest you come up North and play a bit of league....I even invite you to play at my local club where I will make you most welcome and get you a few beers in after you have rooled around in the mud. THEN you can make a response. You cannot possibly comment on s sport you have never played.
@Rommeljnr how does it take brains to have a scrum half the game? union is for fat people. league requires more of a physical challenge. and btw its funny that all the best union players came form league
@MrSoliPat Only a clueless thugby league fan who is uncapable of thinking themselves would ask that question. Comparing Union to league is like comparing ... Chess vs Checkers/Droughts ..... Just because checkers is easier to understand and play doesnt make it a better game just like thugby league.
@Rommeljnr you c thats just a retarded argument that has no facts or actually anything to consider. in fact all union arguments are like that they all claim shit thats got nothing to do with the actual sporting rules. PLease tell me why union rules are better then leagues.
@MrSoliPat they are better than league because the players are tested in more situations, the players have to have a wider array of skills and the game is more attritional..
i like a bit of league but thats why i think union is alot better. league can be repetitive.
@MrSoliPat I hate american football, i hate it because they have downs. The six tackle rule is much like downs. Union is more like association football (continued play). I also dont like the fumble rule. And theres no lineouts in league and I LOVE LINEOUTS!! :)
Some of unions best ever players and internationals were originally league players like Matt Rogers, Wendell Sailor, Brad Thorn, Sonnybill Williams, Ray Price, Michael O'Connor all Wallabies and All Blacks in their day
@lockywazere2011 wtf u on about matt rogers, sailor, sbw thorn etc arnt some of the best union players ever !!! lmao you could of at least said robinson then yeah maybe u have an arguement
@lockywazere2011 yea those guys were crap accept for brad thorn and he started playing union before league he played for the all blacks in the world cup in 2003 then moved to league
rugby leage is probably more entertaining but it would rid the use of the fat guys like the props, having said that union are basically trying to change to league:/
As an American trying to learn about rugby football, I find both codes to be ineresting and fun to watch, and I see characteristics of my beloved American football in both.
Cheers to both of American football's cousins!!!!

league repetitive? anybody watch the last 5 minutes of the first half of Scotland v England, Scotlands forwards going sideways across the pitch and back again several times? And what about this stupid standing there with the ball on the ground nobody touching it for 5 minutes, called a ruck if I remember from my playing days, should be a 10 second rule, use it or lose it. As said below, both have their advantages, and should be appreciated for their respective strengths.

MegaBILLYBALLBAG 1 month ago
@MegaBILLYBALLBAG Far less than 58%. The IRB puts it at between 42 - 48% noted in six nation competitions, In Australia an average of 28 mins has been noted in super 14 competition. That's an awful lot of nothing going on in a Union game.

Everyone knows Union is far better. Those little league teams like the kangaroos are no match for the Wallabies, Allblacks or Springboks
thecallan008 2 months ago
the kicking game has gone down alot in union since 2007 which makes it alot more interesting to watch
SouthBEZ 2 months ago
Essentially if you like kicks, rucks, mauls and scrums watch Union. If you like Passing, positional understanding, running with the ball in hand, impact tackling and tries watch League.
terrortorn 3 months ago
Essentially. League is a much more physical game. But its quite dull. Its too repetatve. You cant really get a set play going, you cant really get much change. Its a bit too much of a Battering ram game. Union has alot more Technical details to it!
I'm a flanker so its a lot more fun for people like me!
lord171 3 months ago
@lord171 plus, Union is kinda a strategic game and I like league too, but the code is too repetitive.
OBJones28 3 months ago
League is too repetitive. Union is way better when theres less kicking....unless its frans steyn.
LMFAO90809 3 months ago

You revel in tedium, claim skill but show only a dull, poor contest.
terrortorn 2 months ago 10
Come on guys don't brag about the other codes, I love both codes and both have their own way of play and style and strategies. League is fast paced and you have to be very fast to play the code, while union is just like a fight for the ball. Rugby union and league all the way.
OBJones28 4 months ago
Look, i much prefer leauge, i find it more exciting, more physical and faster pace.
The game is about running, and tackling, and getting that Try. Union i find annoying, because all you seem to see now is penalty goals. Union defence is rubish. A player makes a small break, and not even 5 defenders get him. League is much more faster and physical, and harder to play. The hits are huge, the players get smahed in the face, stand back up and keep on going, i love that. They are both good but RLwins

im sorry but all union has over league is brains, not gonna lie you are far smarter in promoting the sport e.t.c. which is why it is played by far more countries. however union is so far behind league its untrue, the youth scouting system is shocking the coaching is terrible and basic core skills are ridiculously poor. in union you have some players who can handle a ball i.e. catch and pass, in league you have ball playing props who can pass, overall league players are all round skilled.
leexgx 5 months ago
@leexgx <<<holy shit this is the stupidest comment ever!!
like read your post again mate. a union prop tackles, carries, works in the lineout and scrumtime and has to ruck. all a league prop does is run and tackle. the scrum and lineout in league is a joke. union backs have to be able to run, kick, field, ruck, tackle and even get their position when being tackled properly
league backs just run, tackle, field, and one lad normally does all the kicking. union has far greater skill sets!!!
IrishDub18 5 months ago
@IrishDub18 I agree, rugby league scrums used to be competitive and league does the kicking too. In union, you have to released the ball immediately after you get tackled or you will be called for a penalty. I like both codes and both have their own strategies and tactics. League is pretty fast and tough while union is tactical and tough. lol

@MinkBomb League .... scrum ???? try standing group hug , where the ball is then rolled into the 2nd row! In Union the scrum can be used as an attacking tactical part of the game. Only point of a so called League scrum is for the forwards to compare who has the worst B.O.

IamHeisenberg 5 months ago
@IamHeisenberg sorry id have to disagree with you becuase anyone with a functional body can play union decent enough so id say that is better for clubs. while league requires a higher physical demand and only reason union is bigger is because it has been around longer. and im not trying to offend anyone but i duno about playing to sport but league is the better spectacle sport
MrSoliPat 4 months ago
@Thetacticalcorner No moves in League? Are you fucking stupid? I've played RU and RL at decent amateur levels and only been shown a handful of moves in RU. Every RL team has dozens of moves with different aims - defence misdirection, angled runners, crash balls, etc, etc. All involve dummy runners, angles, impeccable timing and ball skills. RU is for kickers, unfit forwards, and backs who don't like to get too involved and is mind-numbingly boring to watch and play. RL is vicious and demanding.
MancPie 5 months ago
Look, many union fans say that union is a much more physicall sport? Well, every single player that left union and went to league said: "League is much faster, harder and in terms of hits league hurts much more."
Union scrum is much better, but the game is so scrappy, players make a small break and not one defender is fast enough to catch them......and most of union points are scored from fucking penalty kicks.....

union is a school standard game that extoles the virtues of falling on the floor, turning your back to the opposition and dropping the ball. an unevolved game that has no room to manouver in development as proper rugby got there 100 years before. rugby union a complete triumph of style and class association over content. only in rugby union can hoofing the ball straight into the crowd be considered a skill. there are good reasons we call it kick and clap.

Look at the size difference.
Rugby is far more difficult tactically and when it breaks down they revert to the forwards going a meter at a time. The players are much bigger and stronger and the backs much faster than in league. The kickers are much...much better in union aswell .
brownballs100 6 months ago
@brownballs100 are u fucking serious? the backs are slow fat cunts in rugby union and please tell me why the full backs kick to 1 another for about a third of the game and also can u please tell me why you games at least 2-3 a week dont score a try. what your saying is tottaly crap the forwards in union weigh 20-24 stone and have massive bellys even you with your union specs can see that 1 thing i agree is kickers are better
888RUGBYMAN 6 months ago
@888RUGBYMAN
I dont know which games of rugby you are watching but a full backs job is to clear the line when he is under pressure. All the fowrads in my previous teams have had less tan 9 % body fat , thats including the front row. Even at age group level our fowards still had to squat double their weight s and bench double their weights. In Rugby i play wing and in league i played centre , unions a lot harder to play.
brownballs100 5 months ago
@brownballs100 i dont know which teams you have been playing in must be a super team because if you would watch the games on tele you would realise that the forwards not all i mite add are very slow and over weight, and yeah i understand the job for the full back is to relieve pressure but this doesnt mean he has to kick it all the time.

@elbriano1000
rugby league produces far more entertaining matchs even though it has a more direct style with less room for variation. it is more fast paced. players seem to have superior spatial awareness, ability to put balls into holes, running angles.
its more simplified than union but the core skills of passing tackling and at the very least 'attacking kicking' aspects of the games look better than those of union.
from a union man.
The20473as 6 months ago
@The20473as how can you possibly consider union faster. the headmaster, sorry referee in union has so many technical fouls to choose from when any play is ongoing union rarely has 30 seconds of unbroken play. league is the evolution of rugby designed to be played by men and watched by a paying audience. union is still a thugish free for all bound by the fact that rugby league initiated all the worthwhile game changes from 1895 onward.
terrortorn 5 months ago
Only posh twats think you have to be intelligent to play union, but it's simply not true. What aspects of the game require intelligence? None, the scrums don't, the lineouts don't, the kicking game of league is more tactical and skilful than union, and the general play of league is a lot faster, so you have to think faster. To play union you don't have to be intelligent, you have to be gay.

I love rugby league
Rugby union is so fukkin boring becoz of too many scrums and confusing rules. Union is really tough to follow.
Rugby league is a easy game to follow because of its speed, physical, and fast play. I love the six tackle rule (similar to the American football four tackles and Candian football 3 tackles). The scrums are used to be competitive, but league put the safer scrum they are using today to get their own identity.
From an American,
OBJones28 7 months ago
@OBJones28 You really didn't have to put that last part (From an American). You are basically saying that you enjoy sports that require no creativity or intelligence whatsoever. Union is not complicated, but it takes brains, something you NFL-loving Americans clearly are in short supply of.
elbriano1000 7 months ago
@elbriano1000 Union is growing quick in America, but union sucks anyway. It puts me to sleep very quickly like watch a EPL match. Rugby league is more entertaining than union because of its fast pace action. Rugby league will be back on the map. The main reason why people saying union is better than league is because it is spreading across the globe to new countries. The only main thing union has is the French Top 14 and the Heineken Cup.
OBJones28 7 months ago
@OBJones28 sike the southern teir is so much better then the north. rugby league are just union want a bees. the average size is most league players as as tall as scrumhalfs. union is the real sport there is a reason it is more popular
MajorRugby 7 months ago
@MajorRugby hehe, I watched both codes and tell me the real reason why u think union is better than league?
OBJones28 7 months ago
@OBJones28 You ignored my comment completely. I don't care which is growing faster in the states. I am saying that it is a fact that union requires more well roundness, intelligence, and skill. This is an irrefutable fact. League takes no brains and is almost as boring to watch as stupid NFL (4 seconds of play, then 30 seconds of rest, and only the man with the ball has to think), league's not quite that bad though.
elbriano1000 7 months ago
@elbriano1000 League too required the same as union but it requires speed and u have to be quick to play league. Gareth Thomas switched from union to league and he got used to the speed and hits of league. When a player switch from league to union and if he wants to play forward, it is gonna to be hard for a former league to learn playing forward in rugby union. Rugby League, the greatest game of all.
OBJones28 7 months ago
@OBJones28 Ok, you're just ignoring my points. I never said i hate league, the speed and athleticism shown by players on the 5th tackle is sometimes exciting but overall i find it quite boring. You obviously have no rebuttal for the point that league takes no intelligence to play, because none exist. Rommenljnr said it perfectly. If you dont have a brain, play league.
elbriano1000 7 months ago
@elbriano1000 well, u like union, a game that is played in South England. I enjoyed cricket and Aussie footy also. Rugby union still has a long way to go to catch league, but I keep on seeing league players switching to union every since the game turned pro in '95. Some union players are switching to league too.
OBJones28 7 months ago
@OBJones28 Alright, well i can see there's no changing your mind, and you wont change my mind either. Let's just both agree that any kind of rugby is awesome?
elbriano1000 6 months ago
@elbriano1000 hehe, rugby league is mainly popular in North England and Eastern Australia (New South Wales and Queensland). League still has a long way to go and when union turned pro in '95, league starting losing players to union and if Benji Marshall switches from league to union, it will be a shocker.
OBJones28 6 months ago
@elbriano1000 haha league players dont have a brain.. listen to urself mate. league players have to make far more decisions than union players and in a shorted space of time due to the amout of attacking and defensive sets, union barely play the game of rugby anyway, you only have about 30 minutes of rugby in a whole match.. wonder where the the other 50 minutes have gone ? probably kicking the ball out into touch and wasting time watching scrums collapse 3 times on every attempt, union is shit

@OBJones28 just out of curiosity, have u watched any southern hemisphere rugby union and league, now that aint borin trust me
victors91 6 months ago
People who say that league is one dimensional don't really understand the sport. Union has less dimensions than league like when they kick it back to each other for five minutes at a time tedious. The scrums are pointless but they take 20 minutes a match, them retard throw ins, no skill to it. Some players in union never touch the ball, each team has to have them little fat players who coincidently have to take "lineouts". Why can't a thinner player throw it in for a change. The intellectual ga
Dr84S 7 months ago
union- barely any big hits, spends far too much time on scrums which is boring, kick the ball back and forth like a fucking tennis match. look at the rugby league players that have come over to union , they dominate, robinson.. ashton... sonny bill.......
league- better game as its faster, bigger hits( check out the rugbyleague hits on youtube and see for yourself) , better at defence, better at attack ,better standard.. watch state of origin. origin is the best standard of origin u will c.
bulls1234567890 7 months ago
@bulls1234567890 This is league... He gets the ball runs three metres, gets tackled, dry humps the shit out of the grass, bends over infront of his team mate who then picks the ball up and passes it to the biggest man on his team to repeat the proccess, my god this game is exciting! and if union playerz went to league (which they dont cos they rnt retards) they would fucking smash anyway. Im sorry but chody jamie soward would get smashed if he played union against a team like the all blacks.
thecallan008 7 months ago
@thecallan008 hahaha wake up,,jamie soward would rip union up mate.. take a few minutes of your time to check these vids 1.)" benji marshal 15 minutes of mayhem " 2.) NRL big hits 2011 etc..
let the footage do the talking ! league shits all over union.
bulls1234567890 2 weeks ago
@bulls1234567890 Hahahaha Jamie Soward?!?! Isnt he the short little chody guy. Guys like Jaque Fourie and James O Connor would tear him up. As for marshall he mite do orite. His little sidestep things that he does wont last long though. I would be suprised if marshall made the bench for the AllBlacks. Dan Carter is simply a class above.
thecallan008 2 weeks ago
@thecallan008 jamie soward.. so he's shit coz he little yea? then u dont have a clue about rugby, u dont have to be 6ft 4 to be a stand off ! look at rob burrow for an example. soward would rip union up guarantee. and for marshall, and for marshal vs carter, no brainer for me . marshal. dan carter is a decent player i wil admit but i think marshal is something special. his step wont last long ? he's been doing it in the NRL for years and the NRL's defence is the best in any code.
bulls1234567890 2 weeks ago
@bulls1234567890 Yes size does matter in rugby. I dont care what if people think otherwise. Skill counts aswell but size does have a factor. Just look at Jonah Lomu..... Marshall only looks good because he is in league which has a small pool of talent. Dan Carter is competing to be the best fly half against Jonny Wilkinson, Matt Giteau, Morne Steyn etc.
thecallan008 2 weeks ago
@bulls1234567890 I disagree with how you say the nrl has the best defence out of both codes. I agree that their upfront tackling is in most cases better, but thats only because league is so predictable. You know for the first 4 runs or so their just going to pass it to some huge guy like sam thaiday. You also know when they are going to kick so you can prepare. In Union you have to read the play, you need to judge whether to stay back and catch the kick or move up in defence etc.
thecallan008 2 weeks ago
@thecallan008 not every attacking set it like that , it all depends on your field position, if ur deep in your own half then yes , u need the big lads taking it up and a big kick to get the ball deep in the opposition half, on the other hand if u start the set in the opposition half then you can expect to see alot of attacking plays from the backs... in league we dont have mauls rucks lineouts etc, its only attack and defence and it shows as our attacking skills and defence is 10x better.

league is a joke, they didnt even sell out their world cup grand final at suncorp in 08?? its funny how league supporters actually think the world favours league over union. sonny bill even said it league is jsut a crash and bash game, union is alot more tactical and actually have kickers who dont miss from outfront 30m out like johnithen thruston did state of origin, so league supporters, please dont try rubbish a game tht is obviously superior to league
Stinso93 8 months ago
@Stinso93 union is quite a joke to it has to many rules and i find the game stopping so often that im just standing around catching my breath. i play a wing and the ball usally gets to the outside then something is called and we reset the line which means the wing who is supposed to be the lead scorer' in the game barely gets the ball to begin with where as in league i noticed i get the ball alot more and its alot more fast paced
striker343 8 months ago
@striker343 yeah i play league but i find union waaaaay harder. Winger is the worst position to play in union youll only touch the ball like 4 times a game especially if you have greedy centres. But union you cant rest you have to get to the breakdowns blow overs next break down and you cant slack. League you already know whats guna happen they run it up and then on the 5th tackle theyll kick its the same thing over and over but union you never know whats guna happen
lahoking4u 8 months ago
@striker343 agreed, I've watched union and it is so fukkin confusing because it is so tough to learn.

People that say union is a thinking mans game and league isn't, don't know shit about rugby league.
mOs4114 10 months ago
@mOs4114 dude league is dumb... every body has the same tactics... let me tell you how league goes pass to a foward charge at a dude until you reach 4 or 5 then do punt or when they get close to the try line they get the ball out wide until the 5th then kick again... same shit for every team and every game... and wats the point of having scrum wen u dont push? union has more variety in its game plus it is quicker because we dont stop when i guy gets tackled we fight for the ball constantly.
Crusadersxv 10 months ago
@mOs4114 Im sorry but league is certainly not harder physically than union. watch a union scrum its like, touch pasue engage... BOOM! league is friken soft. can someone fully explain what the major differences are?
pfl95 11 months ago

@Rommeljnr Or the balls
xDangerMouse95x 7 months ago
@Rommeljnr Really? Where have you been getting your defensive patterns from the last few years? Where are most of your defensive coaches from?
R.U is for fat lads who aren't athletic or hard enough to play league. Doesn't the scrum exist to give lazy fat cunts a chance to justify their position?
LunchtimeLoonies 5 months ago
@LunchtimeLoonies Exactly the kind of clueless arguement you would expect from a lowbrow knuckle dragging meathead league fan. And funny you should pick on the scrum in Union.. at least we have a real f-ing scrum not like league ... just basically standing there in a group hug while the ball is rolled in to the 2nd row !!! And is it Union players that are always in the shit for getting drunk and acting like animals or is it Thugby League players ??? League=Rugby for meatheads and thugs.
Rommeljnr 5 months ago

LunchtimeLoonies 5 months ago
@LunchtimeLoonies I would suggest before making more posts which highlight your ingnorance do some history of the codes and why there are 2. The poorer working class R.U clubs couldnt compete with the richer ones, so broke away to form there own comp and over the years have dumbed down the game for the low brows that play it and watch it. Intial rules for League where same as union and have dumbed it down. B.S. scrums, No lineout, No maul ,all so the mindless meatheads can play and watch.
Rommeljnr 5 months ago
@Rommeljnr O.K. It is obvious you have never played league and are an armchair viewer of union. You don't need to explain any history to someone who has played both codes for 20 years. The Northern clubs broke away because they needed to be compensated for missing work whilts playing. Even a numpty like you should be able to research the devastating impact this had on Englands (union) record after the split. The clubs in the North were much stronger.
LunchtimeLoonies 5 months ago
@Rommeljnr Mauls are ultra boring....lineouts are good but mostly lead to mauls. the scrum is good but not when it is reset over and over. I suggest you come up North and play a bit of league....I even invite you to play at my local club where I will make you most welcome and get you a few beers in after you have rooled around in the mud. THEN you can make a response. You cannot possibly comment on s sport you have never played.
LunchtimeLoonies 5 months ago
@Rommeljnr how does it take brains to have a scrum half the game? union is for fat people. league requires more of a physical challenge. and btw its funny that all the best union players came form league
MrSoliPat 4 months ago
@MrSoliPat Only a clueless thugby league fan who is uncapable of thinking themselves would ask that question. Comparing Union to league is like comparing ... Chess vs Checkers/Droughts ..... Just because checkers is easier to understand and play doesnt make it a better game just like thugby league.
Rommeljnr 4 months ago
@Rommeljnr you c thats just a retarded argument that has no facts or actually anything to consider. in fact all union arguments are like that they all claim shit thats got nothing to do with the actual sporting rules. PLease tell me why union rules are better then leagues.
MrSoliPat 4 months ago
@MrSoliPat they are better than league because the players are tested in more situations, the players have to have a wider array of skills and the game is more attritional..
i like a bit of league but thats why i think union is alot better. league can be repetitive.
IrishDub18 4 months ago
@IrishDub18 well thats fine if you like that. i just don't like union because its to slow for me
MrSoliPat 4 months ago
@MrSoliPat I hate american football, i hate it because they have downs. The six tackle rule is much like downs. Union is more like association football (continued play). I also dont like the fumble rule. And theres no lineouts in league and I LOVE LINEOUTS!! :)
