I use a Spyderco Sharpmaker to sharpen my knives. If I cant sharpen it myself I take it to my local knife shop to get them sharpened. It doesnt bother me.
Yes i have, and they dont actually bring back any edge, they un roll the edges and sometimes de-burr the edges, i will not use a butchers steel on my edc or folding blades.
they also have a tendancy to chip of soft edges due to their grabby surface.
@DJDeathRevenant You have to get a little creative to sharpen the blade but it's very possible on a stone. Granted my shallot has been in service since 2006 and I've beaten the hell out of it, but it's not bad to sharpen depending on the stone you use. For this knife I use a cheap dmt whetstone because it doesn't deform too fast and stays relatively level. But if you want a cheap knife that holds up well this is a good way to go. It's a trooper.
I have the composite Leek, which is identical in construction. Very nice-looking and cuts like a scalpel. Either of these is an excellent choice. Now I've got to get the composite Shallot so I have a matching set. Then I'll have to start on the Damascus blades. : )
Interesting note - if you're a fan of the TV series "Heroes," take a look again at episode 25, "An Invisible Thread," which aired April 27. In the scene where agent Danco drives a knife into the back of Sylar's head, then Sylar pulls it out again. You can clearly see that the knife in question is a Shallot - stainless finish, plain edge. Cool.
The zdp 189 is used for the sharped part of the blade which is on the bottom. The two steels are separated by a thin piece of copper and the softer steel is on top. The softer steel is used for the spine of the blade to allow for some flex while cutting which is great.
The shallot that i have is a collection piece for me. I want to get the 13C26 version of the shallot and i would definitely use it as an EDC. Its a great knife, very sharp and ergonomic which lends itself well as an EDC.
Composite blade looks like it's EN FUEGO. ;)

That recurve sucks ass.
The only reason.
Sharpening.
You will not need to sharpen this knife for years, but when you do STONE SHARPENING IS IMPOSSIBLE!
You need a rod or spyderco sharpmaker or such as the sort.
lansky systems or smith stones are out of order with that... it sucks cause those are my specialty.

Have you tried a butcher steel, they don't re profile but they will bring back a factory edge.

That's what really turns me off of a lot of Kershaw blades :(
Sucks because they make quality stuff, but if I can't sharpen a knife, I can't use it...

yo man how are the 2 steels put together is the zdp sandwiched between the softer steel or is it stuck on the front of it?

Good review, and good lighting so you can see the knife really well. I'm getting one of these soon very soon.
Also I heard it was 1500 made....

I have one and love it. I paid $86 for mine.
It is quite difficult to resharpen to the point where it pops hairs off so it may go back to the knife shop for occasional perfecting.
My knives are used to cut cardboard at work all day long and I really prefer them over a box cutter. I love hearing them zip through the boxes.

You paid a little less than i did for mine. It is definitely hard to re-sharpen myself but i take it in to get re-sharpened and it is no problem!

zdp 189 is definetly the shit

yes i agree!!

What would you classify this knife? EDC or something else? I'm asking if it were just a normal Shallot with Sandvik 13C26 instead of composite.
