Fun to see Danny using my steering wheel. I made that wheel for him at the Indy 500 after I saw him riding a bike to the transporter at sunset. I stopped him and showed him my demo wheel. Without hesitation, Danny said, "I'll try it." Notice where he picks up on Nigel: during trailbraking where he could feel the top of the mu-slip curve much better.<--I shot a video last night explaining this. I made Nigel a wheel a few races later. I've got a new program, so they'll be in cars again soon.
Derek Daly could never shut up for one goddamn onboard lap lol....NEVER, but Paul page is my all time favorite commentator, i think he does NHRA drag racing now.
Unfortunately, though, the IRL is in better shape in terms of finances, teams, ratings, and drivers continuity. Champ Car silly season is almost like in GP2; we usually don't know half of the drivers until a month before the season.
And also unfortunate, if one series dies, it probably will be Champ Car (face it: Tony George will not let down his pride for the sake of the sport).
Sad that such a great sport with rich history is now tainted with politics.
For me, they both suck. Personally, I'd like to see more American F1 teams, drivers, especially manufacturers like Ford or GM. And, for God's sake, can we please build a great F1 style circuit or two in US, the nation that is bigger than that of entire western Europe, instead of having to do with crappy Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen, or Sebring?
I wouldn't want them to change it though. The runoff sure, but to add length to the track, not really. That, and Ecclestone would probably want half of the corners reprofiled to make them "safer"
Ecclestone and Mosley piss me off, I hope Mosley gets his arse kicked out of the FIA for this sex scandal. I'm suprised Ecclestone hasnt taken Monaco off the F1 calender because it is "not safe."
@nuikaus Not even needed! In 1989, the FIA was looking for an F1 race in USA but somewhere else then Detroit. Rapidly, they came down to two track: Laguna Seca and the street of Phoenix... Well, Laguna Seca was safe enough but dumped "too small crown".
F1 test is still alowed, but not racing since their been no race...There is a security problem for an F1 race: the corkscrew. But, this is sacred...
So, if there is no reason to modified, when would he?
It needs to be one league insead of one lame "oval" league with less road circuits than I can count on one hand, and one road circuit league with limited sponsorship and better equipment (sorry the panoz DP01 shits all over the IRL crapwagon). Please for the fans lets get some talks going people. Swallow some egos and come to an agreement.
I agree 100% with you. The IRL is gay, its like nascar with indy cars. I hate IRl because they took all the good teams from what is now champ car(target, penske, etc.) I wish they would combine them back together like the good ol' days when CART ruled over nascar as Americas race.
I was 13 when this aired on television. I'm not sure I remember this race specifically but I know I watched this season as passionately as the 2003 NHL hockey season. US open wheel what so great then. It makes me so mad that Tony George has ruined it. And argue with me all you want... he did in my eyes, and I'm not changing my opinion.
I just realized something about this video. Danny Sullivan's car is equipped with a manual-H gearbox: when he downshifts, he goes straight from the highest gear to the desired gear for the corner, most noticeable in the braking zone for the Corkscrew and the old Hairpin. When they switch to Nigel Mansell's camera, the engine note reveals that he is using a sequential gearbox, having to cycle through all the gears in his downshifts. Interesting.
Great stuff. I've always loved Laguna Seca. Started going when I was 3 years old in 86 and didn't miss a race until after 95. I wish that Champ Car would ditch the San Jose race and return to Laguna.
well im pretty sure you know by now cuz you posted this 10 months ago, but champ cars are coming back to seca in 08... their not sure if its permanent tho

I bet it was difficult to white balance an on-board camera, back in the early nineties... but the purple sky does look kinda silly :)

Have you ever been to Laguna Seca, it is far from crappy and would be an excellent choice for the U.S. gp.
Rivelution 3 years ago
it's too short and slow to begin with, and it's crappy compared to F1 standard. even the brickyard is borderline good enough as a F1 venue.
bluemonolith88 3 years ago
Not too slow really, as you can see, even CART takes most of those corners at a significant speed, but far too short and narrow for sure.
vansoth 3 years ago
Great track I agree, but for the speeds the F1 cars run, I think it's be way too short. A challenge though, for sure.
vansoth 3 years ago
Yeah that was my concern too, but you gotta admit if they make it longer and safer it would be great because the area its in is beautiful.

Too bad he didn't get kicked out. I hope the same thing happens to Ecclestone, he's ruined many of the great circuits.

@Rivelution On Monaco: I think some of them would like to but the problem is that it is really safe on this track since the speed are not so hi.
therrydicule 1 year ago
i'ev been there myself, and Bluemonolith88 is correct. it's no where near F1 standards to be a consistent track of the F1 schedule.
Not to mention it's very short length of the track.

they should hold an F1 race here!

Intermittently between 1:34 and 1:51, you can hear the "jab rock" from Mansell's car rubbing on the racetrack.

i just realized how close the wall is to the track by turn 11... its not like that anymore

God i miss this old indycar racing, it was the best form of motorsport in the world before IRL came along and destroyed it. RIP Indycars.

nice part about this is you see the original banked turn 10, which they replaced in 1995 for safety reasons.
