I have no doubt that Waylon felt getting off of drugs was exactly like a bad love affair/relationship/marriage. I was really impressed with the type of man and father he was when he decided the marriage was over with the wife who didn't want his children around. He made his children his priority and didn't want them abused.
I think the lyrics are incredible and very inciteful. Just a double meaning so that more people will relate to it!
I totally agree with you. It is so creative and innovative too. Mine has a track of Waylon speaking at the end telling about how his lifestory was created in music.
Jim i can only repeat what the co writer of the song said to my friend, and thats all i am doing, i look at the words you have written here and it can apply to either, Thanks JIm take care my friend
Hi Jim I went and got the book out and pulled the Album , i read the book and i have to say, everything you said is 100% right , on the album A Man Called Hoss in the prologue, Ol' Hoss himself said oh chapter 7 thats about drugs . Discussion finished JIm but thank you for a great contribution please call back anytime
neil that aint strictly true, read the replies below to teeger, i have had first hand information on this track.and the first line :-'' You were the toast of the town, but i was the one that you chose'' the song is about past loves up to the time he met Jessi... that is from Roger Murrah the co writer of the song.
Monica (acinom) sent me a message only yesterday telling me that she wrote to Roger Murrah (co writer) and got a reply saying just how the album came aboutshe was thrilled i think i wouls o' been too Cya soon teeg
oh yea and this is an extract which gives you the reason for this song in particular :-
The idea of the song was to represent the chapter in Waylon's life where his feelings are expressed for past loves, before he met Jesse.
You will note it says nothing about his addictions, a lot of people supposed, that was the reason for this song, but he was sayin goodbye o his old loves and Hello to Jessi ... i bet you love it more now...
Chapter Seven Drugs: "I'm Living Proof (There's Life After You)"...
written by Waylon Jennings and Roger Murrah.
"Jennings drug use escalated into an expensive cocaine and amphetamine habit, which sometimes cost him as much as $1,500 a day. He decided to quit in 1984." .....
..."Hallelujah" Jessi pours $20,000 worth of cocaine down the bathroom bowl....
Thanks Jim but here is an extract of a letter recieved by a friend of mine the letter came from Roger Murrah. This song is nothing to do with his addictions :-
'' The idea of the song was to represent the chapter in Waylon's life where his feelings are expressed for past loves, before he met Jesse. ''
Thanks anyway Jim it is still a great song whatever tyhe reason
Don't know what you did but boy does this song sound better than the usual YouTube sound. I haven't listened to this song for awhile but if I remember right, Wyalon was singing about his various divorces before he met Jessi. He explains the various chapters in the Man Called Hoss(also on the CD, the MCI Years), which by the way, I really enjoy. It is fun to listen to it after becoming familiar with his life from reading his autobiography.
This is one of my (many) favorite Waylon songs!!! What awesome lyrics!!! "Nothin's as bad as it seems, I'm learning to live with you gone" So obvious he's singing about his drug addiction..... What an amazing man!!!! LOVE this song!!! Thank you so much for posting Eddie!! *****
I love this. Thanks Wayland for all the great music.

@teddie488 Perhaps he meant that Waylon was under appreciated later on in life?

This song is so GOOD..
'' You (DRUGS) were the toast of the town, but I was the one that you chose" (TO BECOME ADDICTED TO)
Know any ex-hardcore drug users?..
They refer to their ex drug use as another person and that's what Waylon did when he wrote this song. Roger Murrah must have been talking about.
Chapter Four Lost Love: A Love Song.
There's one thing that I won't do.
I won't try to hate someone I've loved before .
You'll remain a part of me like a song I used to sing ..
