@geedunk13 it depends on the use. if you are using it for video editing and heavy usage shit, then probably pro. But if ur using it for school word docs power points ect, itunes, safari probably air. i would go with the non-base air, for that extra money the non base air is that much better
Macbook air is a computer that is supposed to show what the future will be like for example is doesnt have a CD/DVD drive, because eventually all computers will not, everything will be downloaded....etc wirelessly- but on the other side- they could of done a better job with putting more ports into it and bigger hard-drive i dont think that the HD they are giving in the models would be able to accomidate everything.
I think in the future they're gonna add more ports on it since people are demanding more ports on the notebook and it would be way more convenient for them to do so. I think, they'll add an extra port and sd card slot, we'll see.
I Agree i use it for high school and i am so glad i didn't go with the pro! it's so cool and different. I am able to do everything need for all my honors courses. its light and powerful. one amazing machine!
well personally i dont recommend buying air, cuz its hardware comes with aint that good, like the processor speed, and solid hard drive. on the other hand, the new macbookre fur is pretty good, thin and small. pretty cool.
MacBook Airs suck. They have the worst specs I have EVER seen on a computer, starting at "only" $1800. You can literally get a computer with better specs and longer battery life for $200. I really like Jon, and I can respect the Mac OS, but this computer is absolutely disgusting. People say they need it for the portability needs, but MacBook Pro's are now down around like 6 pounds. You can't carry around a computer that's 8 times better for twice the weight?
Since we're nit picking here I guess I should point out that your wrong because this video was a review for the original macbook air which only had a 80G HD and a 64G SSD. But thanks for pointing out that the newest release does have a 120Gb HD which doesn't matter because I still wouldn't buy it.
Sir you must be an absolute retard. First off rong is spelt wrong. And agian you idiots arent reading the post properly. Next time read the post in its entirety and you wont sound like a complete fucking retard you jack ass.
i think it should be cheaper than the macbook because it has a smaller size overall and has lower specs (minus the backlit keyboard and the gestures). if it was priced at $999 i'd find and excuse to get one, just cuz i'm not to fond of bringing my 5 lb 15" macbook pro everywhere, but i'm sure they'll lower the price once the parts for it become cheaper for them to produce it. $999 would catch alot of people's eyes.
You didn't mention anything on the SSD, yes it is smaller space but the benefits make it much better. such as No spinning disc, The speed. Reliability. Will last much longer. Not so much heat. It's a kick ass machine for people who have a desktop and need something small to take with them.
One more thing that I did not include due to character count limitations: I think if you are going to buy something as technologically advanced as the iPhone or MacBook Air, you should be patient for a few months and the price will drop. I know there will be new awesome stuff but if you want to get good deals and want to be a bit conservative on the financial side, a suggest that you be behind on the tech stuff for up to six months just to save money. Ok I'm done now, Seriously!
I definately think it is a sweet product. Credit to Apple for fitting so much into a small package as you said. I might not buy it simply because I am not much of an on the go kind of person and because its not really designed with the gamers in mind with only 1.4 to 1.8 GHz built in. I don't think a small hard drive can be considered a downside because theres always external hard drive enclosures that go through the USB 2.0 and thats what I would recommend to people that do buy it. Thats all.
I believe that if someone is going to buy a MacBook Air they should wait two months for the price to go down, so they can use the money they would save to buy the separate optical drive, which doesn't use that much "Air" for 99 Dollars. I still like Apple, but 99 dollars for an optical drive?
I personally would say that Macbook Air is preety amazing but it just isn't for everyone. well i do have to say that i hate mac os, altho this device is almost revolutionary if there were more things like it and alot more ppl had it then it could in theory be a great wireless device, but idk, also the price is a catch but other ppl may have more money than me lol
if you think this is revolutionary, you should try using OS X for a few days... a lot of us mac people think the Air is worthless. You won't find any of us saying OS X is worthless.
And I have only been using it for about 4 months so far...
Personally I rate the biggest disadvantage of the MacBook Air as the lack of the optical drive...
I've used my PC's optical drive once or twice in the whole of last year. I don't think it would be the hinderance that people think it is... I definately think we are in the age of USB memory sticks now... and failing that software is mostly available online...
unless it's sleekyness I wouldn't want to pick it up until the SSD flash thing doubles it's size to 124 GB or so, and it should become a lot cheaper (when PC's are integrating SSD, so there's a benchmark for it). Howlong u think untill this happens? September, or next year?
Actually according to me, and according to your speech here, there are too many disavantages compared to the pros. The compromises they made for getting the mac so thin are not that worth, I think. The Macbook Pro is already one of the thinest laptop, and is still one of the most powerful and can replace a desktop computer. I won't buy this MacAir which is actually this : air inside...
I'm super tempted to get a Macbook Air but Ive never had a laptop before so i dont know if it will be functional enough for me in the long run. My biggest gripe is the lack of an optical drive. I also wish they didnt make the edges of the macbook sharp so they could add more ports. I think the border of the screen is too thick too. I'm so picky lol
it really is a lil to expensive. for 200$ more i can just get mac book pro and get way more things from it then i would w/ the mac book air. plus the fact that i have to ship it to apple just to upgrade. that's to much hassle.
Hey Jon, off topic - did you enjoy rock band? Can you post a review about it? Im trying to decide between GH3 and Rock band and your review would really help. Thanks.
for dj's (those who travel a lot), there is no audio input so they're screwed. Students are screwed as well with such a huge price and lack of ports and optical drive as a standard (u have to buy it). Macbook air is just too advanced; they should have released it when the world turns all wireless. Big blunder for Apple. Same thing with the g4 cube.
i think even though apple left out many major features, that they are stepping in the right direction. They released this product probably to push the market forward and to see how the market will react. It's a great product nonetheless
for dj's (those who travel a lot), there is no audio input so they're screwed. Students are screwed as well with such a huge price and lack of ports and optical drive as a standard (u have to buy it). Wifi is not everywhere or reliable as well so Apple should stop thinking that way. Macbook air is just too advanced; they should have released it when the world turns wireless. Big blunder for Apple. Same thing with the g4 cube.
I really like the idea of the macbook air, but not having an optical drive built in is a deal breaker to me. Right now i have a macbook which cost less then the macbook air, and if i were to transfer from my macbook to the macbook air I think i would almost be down grading.
it's sort of the midway point between a small PDA device and a full computer. definitely unique. it's not meant to be a primary or "only" computer. it is meant to be a highly portable device, and at the same time, function more or less like a computer.
apple doesn't expect people to need to install software from CD's, fill their hard drives (because they have another computer or external drive at home), or to run state of the art pro software or new 3D games on it.
I get that. The thing is if it's not supposed to function as a primary computer, why should it cost so much... I can get a Macbook that will function as an excellent desktop replacement, and in my opinion is MORE portable than the Macbook Air because it has extra USB ports for thumbdrives and an optical drive built-in... for much much less >_>.. I don't see the point of the air. They wasted a lot of money. Apple's stock has gone down a LOT since this happened.
what the hell are you talking about, you call computer that has an Intel Pentium M 1.1GHz Processor with 512MB Memory 20GB Hard Drive better than the macbook air
i think the air is very good looking, but you dont get very much preformence for your money. and i dont think its good for students, witch students can afford a laptop at this price? the only thing you get is 1 inch less. and not adding an OD is just so thay can keep it thin. apple wanted to make the thinnest laptop in the world, so they didnt add a OD. i think they know that most people wants a optical drive, and the wireless install shit is not practical.
Hey bro love your reviews. This my thoughts of the MacBook Air.
To me, MacBook Air is made as a normal laptop. Not an ultra portable pc or a tablet pc, just a normal laptop with a slim design.
However with that kind of price I would rather get myself a MacBook Pro or MacBook.
I was expecting an ultra portable tablet notebook. Most users have already bought MacBook/Pro, so why MacBook Air. Users want to something else that they can really bring around with them.
Thats exactly what people said about the iMac's "missing" floppy drive in 1998, plus it didn't have any recognizable ports, but instead it had these things called USB ports whatever that is. It was the fastest selling computer of its time. How often do you actually use an optical drive in your business meeting or in a class?
people say its to expensive, and of course it is,but then you look at the cost of led screen, smaller cpu chip, alum casing, backlighting keyboard etc.if i can remember right, the whole installing something from a remote computer is really cool.i dont care if the optical drive is seperate cause who really watches movies via dvd anymore lol.
it would have been better if they just made it smaller not thinner.
dude no offence but nobody gives a sh*t about sony computers. right now apple is the most hyped and its the most popular. mac>windows. simple as that.
its pretty cool. what i dont like is the $3000 price tag on the 64GB SSD. and the lack of IO, omg. its like there literally is nothing there. i thought apple said something like "everything u need, and more." macbook air should be "wat u need, but not all." but i do like the multi-touch jestures on it. so now you can zoom in and out like on iPhone, etc. its pretty cool, but i wouldnt reccommenc it if u currently have a macbook [pro]
Pros: great looking, very lightweight, and slim. Backlit keyboard is awesome, (the backlit from the macbook pro, the keys from the macbook, perfect!). LED backlit display.
Cons: Price should be cut in half, i don't see what makes this thing so expensive, besides the processor that they had to remake. The rest seems to be average, i don't see how making it smaller makes it that much overpriced. If it cost 1000 i'd buy it.
Maybe you think Apple should sell everything at cost just so you won't have to actually save your money. I get so tired of this entitlement mentality. Newsflash! You get what you pay for!
I don't think the fact it only has 1 USB port or a 80GB HDD and no optical drive really matters. It really is intended as a 2nd, portable computer. For example I'll have plenty of USB devices and play DVDs on my MBP at home and have tons of storage, but I take it to class to do Photoshop work/take notes/write code etc. I've never used the optical drive, any USB devices other than a flashdrive and I never do more than 80GB of work in a day.
I can see why it will sell (although it's not going to be a leading product), but since I already have a 1" thin MBP there's not much point in me buying this just to save a little weight. Once it's time for me to replace it though I'll probably go for a iMac/Mac Pro & MacBook Air combo rather than just a MBP.
i think its more like a laptop thats just for notes and certain stuff, not big stuff. sooo i dont think its going to sell verry well i know i wont cuz i need a macBook pro for my career, but i LOVE how thin it is. its amazing.
also, i would like to add that I love love love Ipods, iphone and itunes. But i'll never buy apple tv, time capsule, macbook, imac, or any other apple product than ipod/iphone and itunes.
It is nice that it's super thin, But with a $1000 and little bit thicker i can get waay more powerful Laptop. about the optical drive. I can survive without it, since i can use USB to install software. But when i'm watching DVDs i need that drive. Yes, i know there's "movie rental" on itunes but netflix is still cheaper.
Come on guys we all know jon has ALL the neat toys! You know your going to have one and soon!! I like what I see as far as size, but in my humble opinion it is going to need to many add ons to be usefull and powerfull 80 GIG HD in this day and age isnt big at all. I hope all goes well for those that purchase one however with anything only time will tell. When things get that small and are that new bad things are bound to happen. I hope not though .
I think that the macbook air is cool I will probably get one for the wife as she likes small computers. The only thing I didn't like about macworld was time capsule because this means it the only way to do wireless backups and I already have an airport extreme and external hard drive!
the macbook air looks cool but it is not for the general public ... i think the sales target will be business people that travel a lot and don`t really care about system performance as long as word and excel run s on it. for sure i would not buy one, it is more of less a MacBook at almost double the price, honestly i was a little dissapointed of the realeases, i was hopeing to see something revolutionary for everyone.
Great video! Like you said, the MacBook Air has its pros and cons. I uploaded a few videos just now about Macworld. I just have to wait to for YouTube to approve and monetize them.
I think its really stupid... slow small hard drive... No Superdrive (without paying 100 dollars). TIme Capsule is 300 for 500G... Only 1 USB.... The Macbook is only 2 pounds heavier... It starts out 700 more than the equivalent macbook (white) Nice idea but how practical is it...?
Jon, they said that the Macbook Air won't be available for 2 weeks so I doubt they would have them in the store yet. I wish they were available now along with the Apple TV update but 2 weeks isn't that long of a wait.
the 80gig harddrive is only 4200 rpm, not that fast, the SSD is faster, but it the durability of them isn't proven, and they cost an extra $1000. For the amount of money I think its worth it to pay a little extra and get a nice macbook pro, far faster, larger capacity, way more ports, bigger screen, built in superdrive. That's what I think at least.
i agree with jehfree562 id much rather have the macbook pro the macbook air is nice to look at but so is a ferrari, and you carnt do your weekly shop in a ferrari
I think the Air is amazing because it shows the future of the new Mac notebooks, probably a MacBook / Pro thats a lot more potable. I also think that because there using an 80GB hard drive form the iPod that 160GB will be along latter this year in witch case i will purchase one. I just can't wait to see what they release at the end of Feb. because its 2 years since the Mac mini came out, maybe a Mac nano
Is the Macbook Air touchscreen? im getting a macbook pro soon, purchasing one in about 2 weeks or so i dont know if i should go with the Macbook Air now.. tough choice

It's for people to take on the go - it's not designed for gaming, even though it does play games relatively well.
If you can't afford it, don't be a pratt about it. Surfing the net, typing etc - it's great to take with you.
It's not the most practical thing in the world, but it's a nice 'toy' to have.

unless it's sleekyness I wouldn't want to pick it up until the SSD flash thing doubles it's size to 124 GB or so, and it should become a lot cheaper (when PC's are integrating SSD, so there's a benchmark for it). Howlong u think untill this happens? September, or next year?
laiven1 4 years ago
Actually according to me, and according to your speech here, there are too many disavantages compared to the pros. The compromises they made for getting the mac so thin are not that worth, I think. The Macbook Pro is already one of the thinest laptop, and is still one of the most powerful and can replace a desktop computer. I won't buy this MacAir which is actually this : air inside...
Nikoo033 4 years ago
I'm super tempted to get a Macbook Air but Ive never had a laptop before so i dont know if it will be functional enough for me in the long run. My biggest gripe is the lack of an optical drive. I also wish they didnt make the edges of the macbook sharp so they could add more ports. I think the border of the screen is too thick too. I'm so picky lol
kockgunner 4 years ago
if you are using it as a primary computer, get a MBP, it will completely replace any desktop. that's what i did. my first laptop too.
fhqwgads2005 4 years ago
i want to buy one even though there are alot off downgrades
because im not trying to replce my desktop
-yet-
but im not completely sure when its coming out into stores
can you answer that for me thnxs-
kylexy700 4 years ago
its coming out in 2 weeks
kockgunner 4 years ago
it really is a lil to expensive. for 200$ more i can just get mac book pro and get way more things from it then i would w/ the mac book air. plus the fact that i have to ship it to apple just to upgrade. that's to much hassle.

Same thing with the g4 cube.
mykeman83 4 years ago
i think even though apple left out many major features, that they are stepping in the right direction. They released this product probably to push the market forward and to see how the market will react. It's a great product nonetheless

I really like the idea of the macbook air, but not having an optical drive built in is a deal breaker to me. Right now i have a macbook which cost less then the macbook air, and if i were to transfer from my macbook to the macbook air I think i would almost be down grading.
smpr02 4 years ago
No you'd definitely be downgrading. Look at the pathetic processor.. Macbook Air is aggrivatingly bad.
kokoroxx 4 years ago 2
yea thats another reason i would be downgrading. The harddrives aren't to impressive either.
smpr02 4 years ago
Yeah, at least the base Macbook's 80GBHDD is upgradeable for small costs.
kokoroxx 4 years ago
it's sort of the midway point between a small PDA device and a full computer. definitely unique. it's not meant to be a primary or "only" computer. it is meant to be a highly portable device, and at the same time, function more or less like a computer.
apple doesn't expect people to need to install software from CD's, fill their hard drives (because they have another computer or external drive at home), or to run state of the art pro software or new 3D games on it.
fhqwgads2005 4 years ago
Apple's stock has gone down a LOT since this happened.
kokoroxx 4 years ago
that sony is a pretty sweet machine.
jon4lakers 4 years ago
well i already pre-ordered the air and its comming in about 2 weeks...(i got the 3 grand air)...but 2 grand is just as good :)
13 reasons buyin it:
1.really portable for school and home
2.i dont use my opticle drive only for movies and thts fixed with itunes movies rentals
3.one usb port is good enough for me cause i only got an ipod
4.its big enough ram and hard drive because with a year on my 160gb vista labtop a only used 40...
gaylord93 4 years ago
what the hell are you talking about, you call computer that has an Intel Pentium M 1.1GHz Processor with 512MB Memory 20GB Hard Drive better than the macbook air
adrianc06 4 years ago
im buying one the day it comes out.
ccl1590888 4 years ago
i think the air is very good looking, but you dont get very much preformence for your money. and i dont think its good for students, witch students can afford a laptop at this price? the only thing you get is 1 inch less. and not adding an OD is just so thay can keep it thin. apple wanted to make the thinnest laptop in the world, so they didnt add a OD. i think they know that most people wants a optical drive, and the wireless install shit is not practical.
Klingrad 4 years ago
Hey bro love your reviews. This my thoughts of the MacBook Air.
To me, MacBook Air is made as a normal laptop. Not an ultra portable pc or a tablet pc, just a normal laptop with a slim design.
However with that kind of price I would rather get myself a MacBook Pro or MacBook.
I was expecting an ultra portable tablet notebook. Most users have already bought MacBook/Pro, so why MacBook Air. Users want to something else that they can really bring around with them.

needs a optical drive...the world isnt ready for that yet. too futuristic. this is ahead of its time. maybe in like 4 or 5 years.
bretblatt 4 years ago
"this is ahead of its time. maybe in like 4 or 5 years"
thats a joke right?!
S02 4 years ago
Thats exactly what people said about the iMac's "missing" floppy drive in 1998, plus it didn't have any recognizable ports, but instead it had these things called USB ports whatever that is. It was the fastest selling computer of its time. How often do you actually use an optical drive in your business meeting or in a class?
PlatonicKamel 4 years ago
people say its to expensive, and of course it is,but then you look at the cost of led screen, smaller cpu chip, alum casing, backlighting keyboard etc.if i can remember right, the whole installing something from a remote computer is really cool.i dont care if the optical drive is seperate cause who really watches movies via dvd anymore lol.
it would have been better if they just made it smaller not thinner.
and the whole 1 usb port is a crock lol.

absolutely right, the future is Blue Ray

Macbook Air sucks
jase7725 4 years ago
the vritual drive is not the only option,
they have a USB superdrive they are offering specifically for teh macbook air, you can order it as an accessory.
i personally would love it, it's super small, and it's not any worse than my macbook i have now.
well, actually i use my firewire port for my external harddrive, so that would be the only thing from keeping me from buying it.
also, i don't like how the keyboard is black. looks weird.

dude no offence but nobody gives a sh*t about sony computers. right now apple is the most hyped and its the most popular. mac>windows. simple as that.

hey jon,
i would get one only if i had a nicely specked imac.
bamafan823 4 years ago
right. apple should pair up w/ japanese engineers.
samuraizulu 4 years ago
no interested:
A. WAY too expensive.
B. 64GB SSD, good idea but really should step up to 128GB
C. Can't upgrade? not good.
D. No optical drive sounds bad and that whole "virtual drive" sounds like it will have a lot of issues
mbeals47 4 years ago
its pretty cool. what i dont like is the $3000 price tag on the 64GB SSD. and the lack of IO, omg. its like there literally is nothing there. i thought apple said something like "everything u need, and more." macbook air should be "wat u need, but not all." but i do like the multi-touch jestures on it. so now you can zoom in and out like on iPhone, etc. its pretty cool, but i wouldnt reccommenc it if u currently have a macbook [pro]
and1strtblln 4 years ago
Pros: great looking, very lightweight, and slim. Backlit keyboard is awesome, (the backlit from the macbook pro, the keys from the macbook, perfect!). LED backlit display.
Cons: Price should be cut in half, i don't see what makes this thing so expensive, besides the processor that they had to remake. The rest seems to be average, i don't see how making it smaller makes it that much overpriced. If it cost 1000 i'd buy it.
adriaanmulder 4 years ago 2
processor, motherboard...lots of stuff. and its small. no one else can top it so until then they have the highest demand for the product.
samuraizulu 4 years ago
Price should be cut in half? Are you nuts?
Maybe you think Apple should sell everything at cost just so you won't have to actually save your money. I get so tired of this entitlement mentality. Newsflash! You get what you pay for!
montex66 4 years ago
I think they are awesome!, But i am not sure if i would buy one though.
Defunkt25 4 years ago
I don't think the fact it only has 1 USB port or a 80GB HDD and no optical drive really matters. It really is intended as a 2nd, portable computer. For example I'll have plenty of USB devices and play DVDs on my MBP at home and have tons of storage, but I take it to class to do Photoshop work/take notes/write code etc. I've never used the optical drive, any USB devices other than a flashdrive and I never do more than 80GB of work in a day.
Not suited for those in digital video though.
PlatonicKamel 4 years ago
I can see why it will sell (although it's not going to be a leading product), but since I already have a 1" thin MBP there's not much point in me buying this just to save a little weight. Once it's time for me to replace it though I'll probably go for a iMac/Mac Pro & MacBook Air combo rather than just a MBP.
PlatonicKamel 4 years ago
i think its more like a laptop thats just for notes and certain stuff, not big stuff. sooo i dont think its going to sell verry well i know i wont cuz i need a macBook pro for my career, but i LOVE how thin it is. its amazing.
baEaglei1 4 years ago
also, i would like to add that I love love love Ipods, iphone and itunes. But i'll never buy apple tv, time capsule, macbook, imac, or any other apple product than ipod/iphone and itunes.
dudewtfwtf1 4 years ago
I'm not going to get one
1.price
2.built in battery
3.80gb. come on even ipod is up to 160gb
4.1 usb port
5. and price
It is nice that it's super thin, But with a $1000 and little bit thicker i can get waay more powerful Laptop. about the optical drive. I can survive without it, since i can use USB to install software. But when i'm watching DVDs i need that drive. Yes, i know there's "movie rental" on itunes but netflix is still cheaper.
dudewtfwtf1 4 years ago
I agree, and also, it's cost's $1,000 for the upgrade to the 64GB SSD.

Those are my thoughts on the MacBook Air.
All the best !

JTP1193 4 years ago
Jon, they said that the Macbook Air won't be available for 2 weeks so I doubt they would have them in the store yet. I wish they were available now along with the Apple TV update but 2 weeks isn't that long of a wait.
mstokes29 4 years ago
the 80gig harddrive is only 4200 rpm, not that fast, the SSD is faster, but it the durability of them isn't proven, and they cost an extra $1000. For the amount of money I think its worth it to pay a little extra and get a nice macbook pro, far faster, larger capacity, way more ports, bigger screen, built in superdrive. That's what I think at least.
lennarttrouborst 4 years ago

i agree with jehfree562 id much rather have the macbook pro the macbook air is nice to look at but so is a ferrari, and you carnt do your weekly shop in a ferrari
roblucy 4 years ago
I think the Air is amazing because it shows the future of the new Mac notebooks, probably a MacBook / Pro thats a lot more potable. I also think that because there using an 80GB hard drive form the iPod that 160GB will be along latter this year in witch case i will purchase one. I just can't wait to see what they release at the end of Feb. because its 2 years since the Mac mini came out, maybe a Mac nano
tab1990 4 years ago
I didn't see an option to upgrade the RAM. I'm not positive, but I don't think it's expandable beyond the 2 GB's it comes with.
Thanks for the videos!
