@tastycajun0381 Any soil. I use heavy red clay soil from my house yard. Soil from a farming mate, bought loam from a soil retailer. For the heavy red clay soil I use 70% compost 30% red clay soil. The rest because the soil is more easily workable in its natural state I use 50/50 mix compost to soil. It works well for me. I also recycle all my garden soil through the compost bins as the layer required for the medium for the bacteria to live in. I have five one cubic metre compost bins in use
@tastycajun0381 m8 The best way is to put a layer of soaked newspapers about 5 pages maximum. This will prevent weeds etc from growing up into the raised bed. Newsprint nowadays is soy based and not harmful for vegetable growing. Throw away any glossy pages of advertisement. Soil, use any soil BUT I use a 50/50 ratio of soil and compost for the majority of soil and work in a manure (horse chicken sheep etc) about 2" deep into the soil before planting.
@Haliotro As opposed to what? a New York Accent? If I had to judge a video on gardening based solely on the voice of the narrator, I would believe a southern accent to be more credible than a city accent. What do they grow in the city, dandelions?
a little piece of advice for those suffering from articulation pain, ankle, knees, back especially, do not build your beds larger than 3' and leave at least 2½' between them, a 4' large bed might be tempting, but with greater area come greater pain, trust me, be conservative
@mahaffeyitidotcom thankyou, this website is great. although, im not going to buy seeds from here, it has many other useful products for my lifestyle. thankyou once more :)
the "monoculture" or as I know it companion planting is the way to go imho...it's crazy easy when we learn this method ..the plants even feed each other !! ...oh, and take care of each others pests ... Nature has the answers..
@Danman429 simply put you plant together species which are known for being good companions...: space will not allow detailed comments here.. google it- also try looking up permaculture..
Also, the method of the 'three sisters' [corn squash beans] is a good starting place to read about .. also beneficial insects can be attracted via companion planting to control less desirable critters -as opposed chemical spraying etc.
