  • As a kid I saw Harry live at Ball State in Indianapolis, musta been 1978. Had tickets to a show he was scheduled to play in Indy when he died. He was one of the last of the best.

  • I miss you Harry rip

  • I love harry but never heard this song before, my other favorite artist is Dylan so when I heard the chorus I was like lol XD (I'm only 14 years old)

  • Life was so much better in 1974.

    Love you Harry.

  • As a young child, I played my parent's Harry Chapin CD so many times that it wouldn't play certain songs anymore. =( I barely even remember that age but I remember trying to play songs on the CD and knowing or feeling that it was my fault for playing it too many times.

  • @blankppr Haha I did that to one of my brother's Harry Chapin cassette tapes (yes that thing of the past) lol I loved the album Living Room Suite and the song Why Do The Little Girls?. So I would constantly keep rewinding to that song over and over. Definitely did some damage to the tape haha He's always been a constant inspiration to me. Love every part of his music. You still listen to him?

  • Do contact me if interested in a DVD with 14 of Harry's performances on the Tonight show.

  • Thanks for posting. A talented and humble musician. Never tire of hearing him and it's a special treat to see him on Tonight. If anyone has a video of Harry singing Sunday Morning Sunshine I would dearly love it.....

  • Timeless and excellent advice, typical Harry

  • was this on dvd or something? great quality!

  • I first saw Harry when I was six years old. He was like another father - his music was always there and whenever he was in town, my parents took us to see him perform. This performance (I hadn't seen it before) brought me back to those joyous times and tears came to my eyes. "I wonder what would happen to this world, if a man tried to take his time on earth to prove before he died, what one man's life could be worth..." - Harry proved what one man's life could be. Thank you!

  • Harry Chapin. My idol then. My idol now. I have never seen this clip. Thank you so much for posting it.

  • I thought NBC erased all the musical performances up through 1976. Where did you get this..?

  • You sing out Harry...WE MISS YOU!

  • I grew up in Huntington and graduated and went to school with one of his children. He played at the school ( for charity of course ). I knew enough about him to be proud he lived in Huntington. A talented man, but more important a humanitarian, the likes of which we rarely see. It was a very tragic loss, he would have continued doing great things and making good music.

  • love it...never heard this one....listened to it for week straight!

  • no one has written in a long time! i've listened to this song every day for the past week. so moving to me...for my own reasons...didn't know this one. love it!

  • what a family,what a man

  • i am 20 and harry is one of my favorites. i loved him ever since i heard this song i was like 15. there is only on person i that i have more respect for then harry and thats joe strummer

  • Harry put his money where is mouth is. Not many like him.

He was the greatest storyteller of his time.

    Thanks for posting.

  • I saw Harry live in concert five times, just turned 50.....was in my late teens, early 20's when I saw him. My brother turned me on to him and he will be 58 tomorrow. Harry left this earth way too soon! Awesome live, great show, great man, he basically died broke because he gave all of his money to starving people throughout the world. Not the greatest voice of all time, but live he is great......blows anyone away with songwriting! Hands down, the best songwriter and words on music!

  • your copying and pastic this to other videso...

  • Great performance. He was actually one of those few singers who were actually BETTER live than in studio. Not a single popular singer alive today is better live without all those bells and whistles backing them up.

Thank you for posting this. He's been dead for 30 years but his music lives on.

  • Ok!! I thought I had listened to everything Harry Chapin, even some of the stuff thats not on record like "I'm a dirty old man".

I just fell in love with this song (but of course) I love anything Harry Chapin.

    Thanks Nightfall

  • Anytime! :) I love everything about Harry and his music. This one is one of my personal favorites, something about this song gives me the chills. I haven't heard "I'm a dirty old man" Now I gotta go search for it haha

  • Im 35 and I grew up listening to Harry Chapin on records and I loved his music and still do.

  • Brilliant and brought back so many memories of Short Stories..........

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • Do you have Cats in the Cradle on the Tonight Show?

  • Unfortunately no, I wish I did now that would be an amazing gem to find lol Or even Taxi. If I do come across it, I'll definitely post it right up!

  • I'd heard that Taxi on Johnny Carson got Harry a HUGE pop from the audience...Wouldn't doubt it either!!

  • An underappreciated gem from the "Short Stories" album (which I still have on cassette.) Of course, that album is best known for WOLD, Mr. Tanner and Mail Order Annie. But my favorites would be They Call Her Easy and Old College Avenue. If there are any videos of him performing those songs I hope someone will post. If not, hearing Song For Myself was a treat. Chapin appeared on The Tonight Show about 20 times. It would be great if all his appearances with Carson were released.

  • Thank you SO much for posting this. I am 22, and I've been a Harry Chapin fan since I was just a babe, when my grandmother would play Harry Chapin records (yes, as in those old 33's) to me. I have only heard of this song and just listened to it for the first time about 5 minutes ago.

My mother had the chance to interview him back around 1976, when she was a college DJ. I am so envious of her, and I would have LOVED to have just seen him from the "cheap seats", much less meet him.

  • It's my pleasure!! I'm glad I can help out by getting Harry's music to people. That is so amazing how your grandmother interviewed him, I'm a bit envious too lol. Like Harry said, you can always count on the cheap seats lol I have a bunch of his albums on record. He's one of a kind, and has helped me through some pretty rough times. I love his music, stories and personality. I visit his grave every year in Huntington. I'm glad to have posted this song, its one of my all time favorites!

  • I'm 20, and I've been a fan just as long as yourself. This man is a legend.

  • Thanks for posting this. A little known Chapin song that perfectly captures his heart on his sleeve music.

  • You're very welcome! :) I totally agree with you. This song is very personal to me, cause I can relate to his message in this song. His music is always with me and so is his beliefs. I'm 21 and have been a long time Chapin fan from age 12. He is and will forever be my all time favorite singer/songwriter. I have a couple other clips from various concerts I will post soon. Thank you for watching and keep the change! :)

    -Matt-

  • It's great to hear that Harry's music lives on even among those who never had the chance to see him perform live. I first heard his music on the radio when I was 13 or 14 and I've been listening over and over for 30+ years now. I look forward to more clips!
