This was the Ramstein Airshow Crash, which occured in 1988. The Itialian military jets were performing a act called "The Piercing Heart" which calls for one jet to go "Through" the heart. Sadly, the pilot was too low and thus, caused this tragedy. Now, NO planes are allowed any longer to fly TOWARDS the crowds during airshows.

The figure was flown in the wrong diection, i.e. if the Italien fellows would have flown this figure in the oposite direction / 180 degrees turned......... only the pilots would have died!!!!!!!

AND ....... all figures, altitudes a.s.o. are checked days before with the pilots AND ther esponsible person of the airfield!

So the US. representative of Ramstein should have say NO ....... or you turn 180 degrees the figure!

I wish they wouldn't do this high-risk head-on fly-by formation flying, it's just to show off, like trapeze artists at the circus, and the only purpose is to attract new recruits - it would be a better sales pitch if the pilots lived - of course, the pilots are brave & admirable men themselves, but the policy seems wrong-headed - too much danger, for everybody.

Flight 870 was hit by air-air-missile. 81 dead.

My friend was there and was traumatized after pulling dead people out of the fires and trying to help. This happened just before I moved to Ramstein. Then not long after this I had to help clean up a Cargo plane crash at Ramstein also and found body parts all over including the pilots hand melted onto the yoke.. will never forget that.
