Gotta say that I find it so much more difficult to slap a 5 string than a conventional 4 string bass. Even allowing for natural talent, this guy must practice in his sleep :-)
I may be wrong but I think this is the guy playing bass with Steve Coleman a few years back (2002/3?) that I saw in the Jazz Cafe in London. He played a solo, the crowd totally following what he was doing, and at the absolute peak when, in my limited experience as a player, you feel "Where do I go with this?" he broke a string, perfect timing, synchronicity at it's sweetest and most ironic :-)
We can all argue about slap vs fingers or whatever, but this is just class! You don't have to like this style to see how talented DD is. Thats what I call 'keeping the show on the road'. How many of us could pull out a 3min bass solo on demand?
Excellent video that brings home just how anything can happen during a show
the funny thing is the sound system went out so dave had to keep going until it kicked back in.. so that sound is from his amp and my drums acoustically...
Este gajo é um fenómeno. Tive a oportunidade de o conhecer no Moçambique Jazz Festival numa cidade vizinha da minha, o pessoal entrou em transe com o dedilhar do David. Simplesmente fantástico.
There is a show I like where he plays bass for Steve Coleman in Nancy Jazz Pulsations in France, the video is available on steve coleman website on the ftp, and maybe on emule.
nice performance I like that, though I prefer when there is more space and silences between the notes, but that's just my tastes probably :p
Only thing better than his awesome bassplaying is his spirit! Had the pleasure of meeting this cat in South Africa and I've become an even bigger fan ever since!!
Dude has got some stamina on these solos!!! He can probably curl train tires!! hahaha!
He's playing all the stuff i can hear in my head but just can't seem to punch a hole in that wet paper bag :-)

This is just so BADASS ... David "psycho hands" Dyson :D
The best part starts1:42 , he starts with a simpler groove, then fastens, and turboes it up, 'till you feel like it's gonna blow. He's badass.
