@CONVICT700, ADR should be used as often as possible, assuming your budget allows for it, or you can do it well enough on your own or with friends for free. The shot is chosen (mostly) for visual aesthetics.

The sound on the original "to-tape" recording is basically a guide track unless you get very lucky with the room conditions. Basically, unless you are shooting a scene inside of a recording studio, ADR is always preferable. There are just more choices. You can also add in extra dialogue.

@CONVICT700, in fact; I believe that Marlon Brando "insisted" on using ADR in every single shot. If a line is forgotten during shooting, it can be placed in over an insert in the cutting room using the same mic presence.

Aside from the actor's preference, it just makes sense. Film sets need lighting, typically. Some lights create a constant hum, along with other electric devices. A phone might go off. A plane might fly overhead, but not be seen. Film cameras make noise

Basically, plan for ADR.

@poerik That would depend on whether you are doing it as a hobby or professionally. As I said, if you are wanting to get more serious about it, then maybe think about one of the more high-end programs. Pro-tools is pretty much the industry standard.

@BenHughesStudios To start, that is good advice. Put "Peer Pressure" has absolutely nothing to do with it. It is a matter of ability within the program, and Adobe CAN NOT get the same end result as Pro-tools. That is like saying a go-kart can out run a corvette. Functionality, tool set, adaptability, comparability, etc... Are all superior. Don't mistake wishful thinking for reality.

well you really wouldn't be able to tell the difference unless you're one of the sound editors of transformers. If it's just ADR and adding sound effects. You could easily just do that in premiere or soundbooth. They have some decent mixing tools.

@MaghoxFr The ADR was recorded in FCP, which is why the mic was plugged into the computer. If I were using Pro-Tools it would have gone through the interface that comes with their systems. On time sensitive projects I sacrifice quality and do it this way, but on bigger projects I use Pro-Tools... But even still, just as that expensive AMP would make the $50 guitar sound better than it ever should, so would pro software like Soundtrack or Pro-Tools for your audio.
