rontenn likes saying Proby was a great mimic and could do any voice but he only mimicked on demos not on his records or in performances. Either he won't admit Proby copied other singers or he can't recognise the similarities. He admits he hasn't listened to works by many of the artistes Proby frequently copied but still thinks he's an expert on everything Proby did.
I don't know who Proby's manager was in 2003 or if he had one but Ben Weisman didn't die until 2007.
@rontenn I didn't say he sounds like John Lennon, I said he was TRYING to sound like Lennon. You pretend to be a big Proby expert and you've never noticed he's a mimic?
@brown601trail He's the best mimic around which is why he was a most successful demo singer for Elvis,Cash,Vee & even for some black stars. Then he found individual stardom & success using his own remarkable voice!
@rontenn What songs did Proby demo for Bobby Vee and Johnny Cash and who wrote them? Which black singing stars did he demo songs for, what were the songs and who wrote them? Who were his employers when he did all these demos?
@brown601trail I can't be bothered to answer ALL of your silly questions.I'll just answer two! PJ's employers for demo's were usually the writers of the songs as they knew exactly how they wanted the song to be arranged & sung. Proby worked for many writers including J. DeShannon,S.Sheeley, R. Batchelor & Ben Weisman. For Ben he did the demo of " The Night Has A Thousand Eyes".A huge hit for Vee.Ben made no secret of the fact that PJ's demo's were better than the finished product !
@rontenn What's wrong, can't you think of any black singers or Cash songs? I can't be bothered with your SILLY claims. So you think songwriters knew how they wanted their songs sung? Sung by WHO? Their demo singers maybe. You're a fool if you think successful songwriters tried to tell somebody like Bobby Vee how to sing a song. You're saying Ben Weisman spread the word he liked Proby's demo better than Vee's hit? Weisman was peddling songs and was no idiot. Who are you quoting? Proby? LOL
@brown601trail. I have never known such a dickhead on YouTube like you. Songwriters knew which artiste they were aiming their songs at. The demo singers were not important but they had to sing the songs precisely as the writer ordered.Weisman arranged everything, the solo singer, backing group vocals & orchestra etc. Not long before he died Ben told PJ's manager that Proby's vocals could never be bettered but because he was an unknown there was no chance he could have been THE name on the record.
@rontenn You didn't say DEMO SINGER in your comment about what writers wanted, dickhead. Your Weisman "quote" falls short of saying Proby's rendition was BETTER as you first said. So which one of Proby's umpteen former managers told you what Weisman said? If songwriters always aimed at a particular artist Proby's aim was lousy. Very few of his songs were recorded by anyone. Most songwriters write hoping they can just sell a song to anybody but you wouldn't know about that or much else actually.
@brown601trail "could never be bettered" means to everyone (except you) just what it says......Proby's was the best version. You must have been bottom of the class in English lessons! Bottom of the pile in life too! Now suddenly you're talking about Proby's songwriting.....I thought the topic was his demo singing for other songwriters? Changing the angle of attack are we?LOL You go on Yahoo or whatever & find out who was Proby's manager in 2003 when the Weisman quote was made.
@rontenn Why should I look anything up? It doesn't work that way, dickhead. The burden of proof is on the guy who makes the claim and that's you. You're a real hoot, running around posting your silly Proby comments like people will believe you. LOL.
Weisman wasn't English. You quoted an AMERICAN who was saying (if he in fact said it) no one was better than Proby was. NOT that Proby was better than everyone. Big difference. By the way YOU introduced the subject of songwriters.
@brown601trail You like that word "dickhead" don't you. Please thank me for teaching you it! Are you on something? You say I quoted an American ? You are hallucinating pal! " Weisman wasn't English"......wow you are quick! Whoever said he was? Everyone knows he's a yank! I think you'd better take another look at the postings you & I have left because you have seen things that weren't even written. You are going round in circles & hopefully you will disappear very soon up your own ass!
@rontenn You lectured me on the subject of English and gave me the incorrect meaning of the phrase "could never be bettered". Giving you the benefit of the doubt I posted the correct meaning of the phrase from Weisman's American point of view. So far the only points you've made on this video are you don't think Proby mimicked John Lennon but he was a great mimic, he demo'd unknown songs for unknown singers and his manager in 2003 must be somebody's dirty secret.
You're here only because of anti-Proby sniping by people like me? Here you've "protected" Proby from someone saying Proby has veto rights on the airing of a demo of a song he wrote for female singers, someone saying laws protect copyright owners, someone saying a probyan's snide remark was seen as anti-Proby, and someone saying what kind of music sold in the U.S. in '64. And countless elephants and windmills were held at bay too. WOW! Where would Proby's career be without YOU on guard?
merrysnotproud You have insulted P.J & his fans non stop from day one. I am the sentry guarding P.J. from back stabbers like you. You talk absolute rot! Soldier Ron
My mistake. I thought rontenn had agreed to a change of subject. I guess he's agreeable if the subject is of his choosing. Probyaffacionado asked for suggestions on the subject of THE ORCHESTRA. Obviously rontenn decided the subject wasn't what HE wanted to talk about.
I think your "kindness" standards are much lower than mine. Swearing at people, calling them idiots, and demanding they leave a public forum he doesn't own is not acceptable behavior in most of the civilized world.
merrysnotproud You keep coming back talking rot about P.J. & I'll keep coming back to defend him. Strange thing is we're both fans!!!! What do you say to that?
There is much more there than "drums and keys". An orchestra is definitely playing and we know that when the event occurred there was an orchestra there. Of course we have no way to know for sure from this video if the tape was authentic or if someone might have rigged it at a later date by combining an orchestral track with a vocal track. But it would have been an unlikely and expensive undertaking with nothing to gain other than sick pleasure derived from hoodwinking jimproby and many others.
merrysnotproud I've had a re-think about this Proby performance & it does sound like a heavy female Yorkshire accent right at the start saying 'it's one of my favourites". So it could be in a North of England club. In these clubs P.J. sang an amazing variety of songs so this could have been one of them. IF jimproby has got the location wrong then it's a genuine mistake & I propose we accept he could have been given the wrong info
Then what is your position on probyaffacionado's question about a big orchestra? You don't hear an orchestra and you agree with rockinjac that those are drums and keys in a club years later? Or you do hear an orchestra and they were commonplace at Proby's performances in those North of England clubs? Or the orchestra you hear was a pre-recorded track Proby used in his club gigs?
Are you saying that no one with a heavy Yorkshire accent could have been at the Midem event in 1968?
merrysnot proud To be honest I can hear backing on the song but is it an orchestra? I haven't said it is not Midem '68 as obviously Yorkshire folk do travel outside of their county. I just don't know!! Thanks for your kind remarks by the way about me in your answer to Mickeslina, talk about the pot etc.!! I would not be on here if it wasn't for constant anti Proby sniping by people like you! You constanly tell us you are a Proby fan,act like one! If you do I'm sure we'll get on.
Other American performers, like Gene Pitney and the Walker Brothers, went to the UK to revive or jump start their careers. It worked but they didn't assume their success there would boost their sales back in the U.S. When Elvis' record sales dropped in the U.S. he looked around, saw what people wanted, and revamped his style and image. Performers who wanted chart success had to either go where audiences wanted what they did, or change what they did to fit their audience.
I don't know what you mean by Proby being a threat but rontenn attracts arguments like a lightning rod. Someone in Sweden said they didn't understand why "Somewhere" wasn't a big hit in the U.S. Someone in the U.S. said by 1964 American teenagers wanted groups like the Beatles and new material, not covers of ballads by an unknown soloist. Then all hell broke loose. If people in the U.K. and Europe don't want to hear the real truth about the U.S. sixties music scene, why bring it up?
It looks like rontenn is trying to pick a fight again. Why else would he throw out a line like Dean Martin was just a run of the mill club singer, or Gene Autry was just a yodeling cowboy? And then pretend all those "club dates" Proby did back in the '80s actually happened at the start of his career? As usual he brings up the "untrue publicity" subject out of nowhere. Only he knows what any of this has to do with the fact that American teens wanted to hear ROCK GROUPS in the mid '60s.
Thought you would pop up! I stated what Dean & Gene started out as in their early days! I don't know wha the hell you are talking about on the subject of club dates!! To finish, in the mid 60's all teens wanted to hear were BEAT groups! P.J. proved an exception!
grizzlygalore said AMERICAN teens wanted to hear ROCK groups, which is what American teenagers called them then. Sorry but as much as you would like it to be true, P.J. Proby wasn't an exception. Teenagers here bought Niki Hoeky later but it was the extent of Proby's U.S. chart success.
Proby people might have loved Niki Hoeky but evidently not enough to buy it since it didn't chart. What does buying or not buying another recording of a song from West Side Story have to do with class? Were Proby fans classier than Sinatra fans or Callas fans? Or Beatles fans? Proby's singing a Beatles song in this video so maybe he thought their music was classy enough for him. Not as classy as those American composers, Sondheim and Bernstein, but classy.
probyaffacionado Thanks for the info.....I've learnt something. It's nice to hear from someone who can have a difference of opinion but do it in a well mannered way, thanks! Ron
I'm not sure I understand your comparison of PJ to those artists and their records in the mid 60's. Most of those artists were recording great new material. Some of them already had a fanbase in the U.S. because of earlier hits. PJ had no history on the U.S. charts. Unfortunately starting out with covers of songs like Somewhere, Maria and My Prayer wasn't likely to make a big splash with teenage record buyers here.
How many songs did Elvis cover when he started out? What about The Beatles? all they sang at The Cavern were covers from the UK & the USA. Proby's covers were not at the start of his career because then he was writing a lot of his own stuff. He started out singing in 1958.
The covers (giant world wide hits except in the USA of course) were 6 or 7 years later. I say to you once more....get your facts right!
probyaffacionado and I were having a well mannered disagreement about why PJ's covers of Somewhere etc. didn't top the U.S charts. Are you comparing what the U.S. market wanted in 1954 to what it wanted in 1964? Not sure what The Cavern has to do with us but the Beatles first hits here were their own material.
About PJ's songs in 1958, many singers write and record songs for years before charting. Like PJ they have no fanbase who might buy whatever they record - including covers.
nawlins4evah I'm just trying to say that PJ did not start out with "covers". I actually hate that word. If someone improves an existing song & takes it to another level then in my eyes they "own" that song. PJ "owns" all of the so called covers he did in '64 '65 & '66 & that's why they all made the charts. He did them better than anyone else ever did before or ever has done since.Obviously the quality of his British hits was too classy for the USA & yet they went for a song like Niki Hoeky
I'd forgotten that Niki Hoeky didn't chart at all in the UK. His classy fans over there must have thought it was awful!
I guess PJ was just too classy for Americans. Thanks for reminding us. Much classier than Billy Eckstine, right? You've made the point so it must mean he's written off selling anything else over here. Including his latest covers of western songs by artists like Gene Autry and Dean Martin. A shame since I'm sure as you say his versions are far superior to theirs.
nawlins4evah We didn't think it was awful, Proby people love everything he's ever recorded but some songs more than others. In most Proby fans top 10 of their fave songs you won't find "Niki Hoeky". Billy Eckstine was a very laid back kind of singer......you cannot say that about P.J. As for Gene Autry & Dean Martin I wasn't aware they started their careers as singers. One was a cowboy film star & the other the straight man in a comedy duo.
Granted, PJ didn't start out singing covers. According to him he made his living slinging hash and washing dishes. FYI both Gene & Dean are known for their recordings of songs on PJ's latest CD. I guess you didn't know that Gene Autry was a singer (from 1931) before he was in films. Btn 1944-51 he had 25 top 10 hits on the U.S. Country charts. His signature song was "Back in the Saddle Again" which he co-wrote. Dean Martin was a band singer long before he became half of Martin & Lewis.
nawlins4evah I know all the of tracks on PJ's latest CD have been recorded many, many times by numerous artistes. I can say PJ does a fine job on all of them & some of them are better than the version's we've come to know & love. Gene Autry started out as a yodelling cowboy by the way. Dean Martin as a run of the mill club singer. They both went on to better things & I have no problem with that! I like 'em both but as you see P.J.Proby is my all time favourite & he can do no wrong!
Sounds like you don't think much of yodeling cowboy singers. Or singers who've worked the club circuit to survive. I take it then that PJ's always been above that kind of thing.
nawlins4evah P.J. struggled at the start along with the rest of them..I've never denied that. As Elvis once said "There's room for everyone". We've come the full circle now in this discussion.I love P.J. & every clip of his on youtube will always get ultimate praise from me. He's a survivor in spite of attracting all sorts of untrue publicity. That he's still out there singing, touring & full of enthusiasm & energy is tribute to his willpower, class & tremendously loyal fan base.
Americans who remember the 60's know that by 1964 the era of great ballad singers was over. Solo artists in that genre were struggling and had to adapt to changing tastes. It didn't matter how "good" PJ's voice was if he wasn't recording what U.S. audiences wanted to hear. In 1964 they wanted to hear The Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Supremes and The Kinks. No amount of promotion would have convinced teenagers to buy covers of old Platters hits or songs from a 1961 film.
hi probyaffacionado I agree with you..if you don't like the song than avoid it. I'm pleased to hear it even if it is not so good in quality. Sorry but I have to disagree it's from the 60's. I can't really hear a big orchestra plus if it was recorded on a fan's cassette recorder then they were not around until much later.I think the early 80's may be more accurate but who knows? Keep the suggestions coming. Ron
You have a conveniently short memory when it suits you, but you've told on yourself. You whined on another Proby video about the reaction you got to one of your comments. Find it yourself. You've nothing better to do.
And of course there is the "mysterious" Peter James. On those videos you've waffled between praise and saying Proby was "superior" to Peter James. Did you forget where you were? Were you a little mixed up?
Do I have this straight? (1)theBESTelvis and PJ Proby can say whatever they feel but I can't. (2)It's OK for someone to sling profanity at me on youtube if they're a motivated Proby fan. (3)Proby has offended other people but that's OK because other people have offended him. (4)Show business is harder than working in coal mines. (5)It's OK for YOU to suggest that Proby's behavior isn't always exemplary, but I must refer to him as God. (6)These rules may change without prior notice.
castleontheriver Who started all of this anti Proby stuff? You & one or two other plonkers! Which is why the BESTelvis & I are on here sticking up for P.J. We are the exception because the rest of the fans have decided "Silence is golden" regarding the knockers as you It's probably the best reaction:....ignore the ignorant! Now go & sling whatever down in the coalmine & hopefully it will all cave in on you.
I'm not buying it. There've been REAL anti Proby comments on youtube for years. My comments that YOU call "anti Proby" are nothing compared to the old stuff.
There are hundreds of Proby videos that I've never commented on and nearly all of them are dead as doornails. If Proby fans are staying away from all those videos because of me, which I doubt, their logic is backward. Actually I've commented on only a few PROBY videos. I think you must have PJ Proby confused with PETER JAMES!
castleontheriver If you don't leave a nasty Proby comment then obviously you'll get no answer. As for Peter James..he was a fine singer but some people could not
help bring up the same boring topic...is he? & in some cases he is! P.J.Proby. No daft statements & no nasty comments mean no nasty replies.
So, you've posted negative but not nasty comments. Fans of those artistes probably have a different opinion about whether your comments are nasty.
You and theBESTelvis need to fall back and regroup. In case you haven't noticed, your strategy isn't working. Look around. The fans have left the building.
Somebody asked 6 days ago about a track list on the Ghost Riders video and the appearance is they are being ignored. Why don't you tcb there instead of lambasting people here?
grizzlygalore, I did ask you to find me some of these supposed comments you say I've left knocking other singers.I'm still waiting! Do you know why most of the fans are not reacting to your anti Proby comments? Its because they have all decided to stick together as one & not bother to react to your rubbish. I know this for a fact because the one or two of us that do react were also asked nicely to ignore you. Unfortunately I always find a pain in the ass like you very hard to ignore.
If PJ was ever top of the bill anywhere in the U.S. I'm not aware of it. His only record to make the U.S. charts was Niki Hoeky. He toured once with Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars sharing the bill with Neil Diamond, Tommy Roe and Billy Joe Royal but was "let go" from the tour early. He wasn't competition for performers here and he's not the Great Man here either because hardly anyone remembers him. By the way, I'm not and never have been a performer. Where did you get that idea?
nawlins4nevah Once again you get your facts wrong regarding P.J.'s hits in America & the times he topped the bill over there. Do not ask me to furnish you with the real facts because if I do you will only come back with more trash comments.
nawlins4evah You THINK you know what was going on in the business in the U.S in the 60's. Only a fool would have declined the chance to appear on a Beatles TV Special at Epstein's invite. He said yes & made a fortune. P.J. became huge in England & the rest of the world. America being America thought he was part of the British Invasion which blew your music scene apart. Perhaps that was why he was only moderately succesful in the U.S. ....ignorance!
First you claim PJ had hits in the U.S. and was a success. Now you say he didn't do so well here because we're an ignorant bunch. Ignorant or not, we bought plenty of records by the Beatles, the Stones and dozens of other British and American recording artists. Pop record sales here were greater than the UK, Europe and Australia combined. If PJ couldn't figure out how to make it here I guess that's why he moved over to the UK.
I take it then that you agree with theBESTelvis that Proby has stood on people's toes. Is that somehow a selling point?
What's it to you whether I'm a Proby fan? And what do my comments to theBESTelvis have to do with my opinion of Proby? You're saying that by criticising comments by you and theBESTelvis I'm actually criticising Proby. Who appointed you his alter ego?
castleperson I'd like to stand on your head!! Proby fan or not! Go back & read some of your comments of the last year & you'll see how much you have criticised P.J. If you had not have been so horrible we would not be on here trying to make you see the error of your ways. Apart from brain failure it appears your memory has gone now!
Stand on my head? You talk awfully big on the web don't you?
The only one posting something bad about Proby in this discussion is theBESTelvis. When I pointed it out, you both tried to bury me in your usual plethora of profanity. So I'll assume neither of you wants to retract the comment about Proby standing on toes. Obviously neither of you has ever learned to say "oops, that wasn't what I meant". Most adults have.
castleontheriver I'll talk big to you if we ever come face to face be sure of that!! You obviously have a different idea to me of what "Standing on people's toes" means. To me & most folk it means to upset people. P.J. has done that a few times over the years.
Not surprisingly, you have given me a very bland definition of the term "standing on people's toes". To most people it means to OFFEND - not just upset - other people. Depending on the context, it can also mean to disregard the rights or feelings of others while pursuing one's own goals.
Since he hasn't bothered to explain his comment, it's obvious theBESTelvis doesn't care HOW his remarks are interpreted.
castleontheriver theBEStelvis is obviously a very motivated Proby fan & says what he feels just like P.J.does! I fully admit P.J. has stood on people's toes at one time or other. He's in showbusiness, the hardest profession that exists.I can assure you that many, many more people in the business have stood on his toes!! On a lesser scale it seems you & I are standing on each other's toes in our opinions of P.J. I think he's the greatest..you don't!
It's amusing that both you and theBESTelvis think you can win an argument by stamping your foot and demanding that your opponent leave. How's that working for you in real life?
Did I say I was a fan? With people like you claiming to be Proby fans why would anyone admit to being one? Any youtuber, fan or not, can comment on a video. If you don't like it, TOUGH! Where are all those fans anyway? They aren't here. Could it be they don't like your filthy mouth?
You've posted negative comments on videos of other artistes. Do you think people believe you just because you say you haven't?
If you don't like what I say on youtube get over it. It's not your call.
No one could be as stupid as theBESTelvis appears and survive to adulthood. Spreading his idiotic zzzzzzz's all over the comments on Proby videos is just too weird. He's obviously only pretending to be a "Proby fan". He has no career so he gets his kicks yelling at people on youtube and masquerading as an illiterate fool.
On second thought, maybe he really is dumb as a rock and he's been lucky so far.
So you think it's boring that I suggested your comment is derogatory toward Proby. You and rontenn are a hoot! With you two it isn't what somebody says, it's who you THINK they are. You want youtubers to believe there are thousands of fans buying Proby's music and going to his shows. But you think it's OK to shout, yawn, swear, zzzzzz, and insult people you don't know because you ASSUME they aren't among those "thousands". Keep on doing the job you're doing and you'll be right.
castle & grizzly. You are obviously not fans of PJ What the **** are you doing viewing his clips & listening to his music? It does not make sense which is why your comments are sending us to sleep. Isn't there another singer you don't like? If so please go & bother the fans of him/her. I've never read one constructive & sensible comment from either of you anywhere yet. I suppose you'll reply you're both fans of PJ You can guess what I'll say to that!(After I've stopped laughing)
jimproby, this is just another con! there is no orchestra, it's in a club in the 80s, you can hear the people talking. The backing is probably just drums & keys, if you run this track through even basic audio software you'll see, the new description on "Feelings" would fit this track better why you & rontenn are trying to con people is beyond me. I asked people we know in Todmorden they said PJ often sang "A Day In The Life" but not "Feelings".....jack
For a long time all I could hear was poor vocals and no background, but after reworking for the first time I was able to hear orchestra and not just keyboard and drums which I agree was the backing for all PJ's club dates.
I used to live in west yorkshire and attended many of PJ's dates some brilliant and some not so, but I never heard orchestra (or false music as jims says) as in this peice.
I have checked with contacts in Walsden where pj lived and no one ever heard day in the life sung.
At the start of this track you can hear, female : aaaw naaw. male: oooh it's ma fervrit one this. Was there a large fan base of northerner's, with thier cassette recorders (yet to be invented) in Cannes 1968?...jack
rockinjac You & 'er indoors are Proby fans..fine! Your knowledge of Proby is limited. How dare you say this song & "Feelings" is a con.You seem to think your postings are all fine but rare Proby postings by someone else are not.Viewing them with green tinted glasses are you? It's not a competition! My info about "Feelings" was 100% correct by the way....I'd ask you to prove otherwise but if there's anyone doing any conning it's you two. "I asked people in Todmorden".....yeah right!
You're bluffing. All Proby fans might know about royalties but YOU sure don't. Just because a song hasn't been put on a CD or anything else doesn't mean it it isn't OWNED by someone. Assuming that it isn't can be very costly. BTW copyright ownership isn't limited to songwriters and it also passes to heirs. Those quarterly royalty checks I've been getting for years haven't come from the tooth fairy. Everyone isn't as ignorant about music ownership as you are.
nawlins4evah Who was talking to you!? You're getting royalty cheques? not from the tooth fairy I agree, perhaps some other fairy you know. Stop getting too technical for your own good & just listen to the song (or not). Your choice!
If you don't want people to respond to your comments, you shouldn't post them on youtube. BTW I couldn't care less about the sexual preferences at the corporations that issue my royalty checks. I doubt you would turn down the income either, even if you are a bigot. I'm sure PJ doesn't question who signs any royalty checks he gets.
nawlins4nevah I love people to respond to my comments preferably with good things to say about P.J. I did say PEOPLE.....not gloom & doom morons! Have a nice day!
You won't win arguments with a vocabulary that's limited to name calling, obscenities and trash talk. It might impress some kids, but your posts just prove you can't add any real points to what everybody else is talking about. Besides why would anybody care what someone like YOU thinks about them?
Unless you own youtube or this upload you can't set rules about what is posted on it. YOUR comments might be more on topic if you'd wait till you're sober before you post.
Im just speaking the truth, You are ya chums are sad, Whats up...PJ stood on your toes at some stage in your career ? And for your information i don't drink either,
nawlins4nevah Pricks like you make people resort to name calling because fans of P.J. cannot understand what you are doing leaving comments. You are obviously not a fan so why look at the Proby clips? You think you are always right in what you say, never wrong! There are lots of singers I don't like but out of respect I would never leave nasty comments about their music. It's pointless. Zip it & get a life.
Waaaal podnas, ya got it straight from the horse's mouth! Rontenn says ol' PJ is pleased his fans can listen to all his stuff on youtube for FREE. CD sales? royalties? Noooooooo problem! It's all about what his fans wanna hear. So if you've got a PJP track, old or new or in-between, let 'er rip!
Absolutely! Someone can fill up their "empty channel" with uploads of 20th Century Hits and Back in the Saddle tracks. Or that 2008 Bells of Christmas song. As jimmyproby has said so eloquently, it's important to "contribute to the youtube community"! Go for it guys!
grizzlygalore (or should I say Yogi Bear!) jimmyproby, lindgren & many others are all doing Proby fans a huge favour by letting them hear these obscure songs not available anywhere to buy. If you don't like some of them or think some are not up to scratch then that's just too bad! By the way every "community" usually has at least one bad/nutty neighbour.....ever considered moving?
kendall156 You don't get it do you! Obscure tracks like this are NOT available to buy on CD as all Proby fans know so royalties have nothing to do with it. Any Proby songs old,new or in -between bring 'em on!
Anyone who doesn't like certain songs then don't listen! And don't bother leaving pointless comments.
You are sure that Proby wants his "After Last Night" demo on youtube so that thousands (or even millions) of people can hear it - not just the fans that already know about it. And he of course knows that even more people will find it because of the reference to Jackie DeShannon in the description. It's good you are so "confident" about this.
castleon theriver Are you a permanent p.i.t.a in life itself or just on youtube? Only mega stars (LOL) like Susan Boyle!!! get their clips viewed millions of times. For an ace singer like P.J. it's just thousands! I'm sure P.J. will have many sleepless nights worrying about his girlie demo "After Last Night" being on youtube. Why don't you get a life?
So you are saying that you don't care how PJ Proby feels about the public airing of his private demo. You only care about what you and other Proby fans ENJOY, right? And what is of uppermost importance to you is to shout at people who DO think Proby might have some rights to his privacy. You are a Proby fan?
castleontheriver You are not right in the head.! You do nothing but paint Proby black & now suddenly you are worried about his feelings concerning a demo song he did 50 yrs ago. This demo has been known of for more than 20 years & all PJ fans know it was written for a girl singer. BIg deal! There's no such thing as a private demo once it's been sent to different producers especially after all this time. I'm confident PJ is pleased it's still being listened to & enjoyed by us
And did you bother to read page 2 of the comments to find out what this discussion is about? Did you listen to Proby's demo of "After Last Night" that "jimmyproby" put up on youtube? Did you ask Proby how much he likes someone putting his private demo up on youtube without his permission? In case you don't know, the words were written for a woman to sing and the demo wasn't made for public airing.
Yes...ive seen what you mentioned, I don't know PJ so how am i supposed to be able that silly question ? And there's dozens of rare PJ Tracks on here which .." GENUINE FANS ENJOY " LOL, JESUS...you get worse by the day,
@ jimproby, could you tell me what event this was in1968 at the Palais in cannes. Was this not the year the Film Moguls spat their dummys out, and the Student Riots Caused the Festival to be Cancelled...jack
You're obviously referring to the Cannes FILM Festival that was cancelled due to "May 1968" in France. The event where PJ Proby performed A Day in the Life was MIDEM on January 21, 1968. It was the second International Record and Music Publishing Market with participation by 400 companies from 34 countries. Read the Billboard article that lindgren33 quoted. You should get your facts straight before posting something that casts doubt on PJ's performance at this international event!
Keep your shirt on inc2468 it was just an enquiry, and now I know! perhaps if it was on the desription we would all know.Give my Best regards to lindgren33....jack
Rockinjac and jimmyproby would rather listen to jimmyproby's upload of "After Last Night". The fact that PJ Proby wrote it for a woman to sing, with lyrics appropriate for a woman, and is therefore singing his demo in a very unnatural voice has obviously escaped them. Does Proby know his demo of "After Last Night" is being presented on youtube as an early example of his singing voice?
It's a shame that the people who keep putting negative comments on other people's videos have nearly all got empty channels? Anyone who puts on a video has the right to remove comments.
Yet another hate comment at "jimmyproby", where are your contributions? it says on the listing of "After Last Night" that it's a Demo! and that Jackie De Shannon recorded it. Yes I would rather listen to that! I don't have to make up Alias's so i can go around Back Stabbing!. I know Jimmyproby considers all uploads and they are with the very best intentions. This Demo shows PJs incredible vocal range even as a young man, and deserves merit....jack
Proby's "After Last Night" demo wasn't for public airing. It promoted his SONG to female singers. Chances are poor he wants the public listening to HIM sing lyrics like those below. jimmyproby's intentions are clear as a bell.
Who would think that I would ever have a chance with him?
Everybody says he dates, just dates, he doesn't want a girlfriend
But after last night they just couldna been right about him.
Last night he held me near, whispered love words in my ear...
It seems you know absolutely nothing about songwriting or songwriters. Proby wrote some songs for women to sing that he would never have recorded for release under his own name. Many other male songwriters have done the same.
Yeh my names Jack and I'M a Rocker. Your so full of Hate you don't even know where you are, its supposed to be about "A DAY IN THE LIFE" Now go and find youself one!!!
YOU are the one who came here 2 weeks ago and told jimproby that you don't see the point of THIS video. Your "wife" jimmyproby doesn't allow comments like yours on HER videos. Otherwise, I would have posted my comment about "After Last Night" on her video. The next time you attend a Proby show why don't you ask him what he thinks about his demo of "After Last Night" being aired on youtube?
jimmyproby has decided to take the demo "After Last Night" OFF if "A Day In The Life". and "Feelings" are also taken OFF. That shouldn't be a problem should it....jack
rockinjac, You are a big Proby fan,so am I. I never say negative things about his music because to be honest I love it all.Certain people come on here just to criticise P.J. because they have nothing better to do.I've been battling these morons on youtube for years.Welcome to the club my friend RON
As evidenced by the Billboard review that Lindgren33 posted, this performance was obviously an important and successful "day in the life" of P.J. Proby. With jimproby's explanation about the source of the tape, I think anyone (old fan or new) listening to this video could understand the reason for the poor quality. I for one find it an interesting piece of history and appreciate the work jimproby has put into it.
merrysnotproud As you say it's an interesting part of P.J.'s musical history & should be welcomed by all Proby fans. jimproby did his very best with this song to put it on youtube for us & like you I'm happy with it.
Thanks for the song.Quality is not too good but without jimproby's posting of this song many P.J. fans would not have known of existence. This is not to encourage new fans to his music, this is a sort of present to the fans who have been around 45 years! Keep 'em coming jim. RON
Ron if this is what you call a present, i'm glad i was not round your house xmas.lol And are rumours true that rontenn, jimproby, & thebestelvis are forming a trio? seems like they go hand in hand now!. I've been a fan for 45 years, and a present to me is the like of "Love is a many splendored thing". I'm sure this was a memorable occasion,I love PJs voice I don't want to listen to this.....jack
rockinjac The performance is unique.Probably the first & last time P.J. ever did this Beatles classic. To a Proby collector it's a gem albeit poor quality. You don't like it...many do! I've had the song a good while & knew nothing about it.....now I know the year & venue. Thanks JimP.(both of you) Ron
@rockinjac Sorry for delay in replying. Like many fans we all have hours of amateur recordings of PJ's work, most of which could never get uploaded, but this appearance in front of full orchestra I thought was worth the effort and many people have had a go at restoring this old sixties tape recording.
I only upload the rare and unusual and leave releases to others.
I still feel it was worth restoring, but maybe I am wrong. This is the best we could do.
What's wrong ...is it because you didn't POST this rare gem before steve , You have REMOVED nice comments of mine and other's on your PJ Videos, I'm glad your sharing the vids with us all, But your behaviour is very strange,
Here´s what Billboard Magazine wrote February 3 1968: " A fine set from big-voiced P.J. Proby followed, and this included an excellent version of Lennon-McCartney´s "Day in the life", a difficult song which Proby sang with great panache."

rontenn likes saying Proby was a great mimic and could do any voice but he only mimicked on demos not on his records or in performances. Either he won't admit Proby copied other singers or he can't recognise the similarities. He admits he hasn't listened to works by many of the artistes Proby frequently copied but still thinks he's an expert on everything Proby did.
I don't know who Proby's manager was in 2003 or if he had one but Ben Weisman didn't die until 2007.
grizzlygalore 1 year ago
Pity P.J. never went into the studios to record this officially. It's a monumental song!!
rontenn 1 year ago
@rontenn I didn't say he sounds like John Lennon, I said he was TRYING to sound like Lennon. You pretend to be a big Proby expert and you've never noticed he's a mimic?
brown601trail 1 year ago
@brown601trail He's the best mimic around which is why he was a most successful demo singer for Elvis,Cash,Vee & even for some black stars. Then he found individual stardom & success using his own remarkable voice!
rontenn 1 year ago
@rontenn What songs did Proby demo for Bobby Vee and Johnny Cash and who wrote them? Which black singing stars did he demo songs for, what were the songs and who wrote them? Who were his employers when he did all these demos?
brown601trail 1 year ago
@brown601trail I can't be bothered to answer ALL of your silly questions.I'll just answer two! PJ's employers for demo's were usually the writers of the songs as they knew exactly how they wanted the song to be arranged & sung. Proby worked for many writers including J. DeShannon,S.Sheeley, R. Batchelor & Ben Weisman. For Ben he did the demo of " The Night Has A Thousand Eyes".A huge hit for Vee.Ben made no secret of the fact that PJ's demo's were better than the finished product !
rontenn 1 year ago
@rontenn What's wrong, can't you think of any black singers or Cash songs? I can't be bothered with your SILLY claims. So you think songwriters knew how they wanted their songs sung? Sung by WHO? Their demo singers maybe. You're a fool if you think successful songwriters tried to tell somebody like Bobby Vee how to sing a song. You're saying Ben Weisman spread the word he liked Proby's demo better than Vee's hit? Weisman was peddling songs and was no idiot. Who are you quoting? Proby? LOL
brown601trail 1 year ago
@brown601trail. I have never known such a dickhead on YouTube like you. Songwriters knew which artiste they were aiming their songs at. The demo singers were not important but they had to sing the songs precisely as the writer ordered.Weisman arranged everything, the solo singer, backing group vocals & orchestra etc. Not long before he died Ben told PJ's manager that Proby's vocals could never be bettered but because he was an unknown there was no chance he could have been THE name on the record.
rontenn 1 year ago
@rontenn You didn't say DEMO SINGER in your comment about what writers wanted, dickhead. Your Weisman "quote" falls short of saying Proby's rendition was BETTER as you first said. So which one of Proby's umpteen former managers told you what Weisman said? If songwriters always aimed at a particular artist Proby's aim was lousy. Very few of his songs were recorded by anyone. Most songwriters write hoping they can just sell a song to anybody but you wouldn't know about that or much else actually.
brown601trail 1 year ago
@brown601trail "could never be bettered" means to everyone (except you) just what it says......Proby's was the best version. You must have been bottom of the class in English lessons! Bottom of the pile in life too! Now suddenly you're talking about Proby's songwriting.....I thought the topic was his demo singing for other songwriters? Changing the angle of attack are we?LOL You go on Yahoo or whatever & find out who was Proby's manager in 2003 when the Weisman quote was made.
rontenn 1 year ago
@rontenn Why should I look anything up? It doesn't work that way, dickhead. The burden of proof is on the guy who makes the claim and that's you. You're a real hoot, running around posting your silly Proby comments like people will believe you. LOL.
Weisman wasn't English. You quoted an AMERICAN who was saying (if he in fact said it) no one was better than Proby was. NOT that Proby was better than everyone. Big difference. By the way YOU introduced the subject of songwriters.
brown601trail 1 year ago
@brown601trail You like that word "dickhead" don't you. Please thank me for teaching you it! Are you on something? You say I quoted an American ? You are hallucinating pal! " Weisman wasn't English"......wow you are quick! Whoever said he was? Everyone knows he's a yank! I think you'd better take another look at the postings you & I have left because you have seen things that weren't even written. You are going round in circles & hopefully you will disappear very soon up your own ass!
rontenn 1 year ago
@rontenn You lectured me on the subject of English and gave me the incorrect meaning of the phrase "could never be bettered". Giving you the benefit of the doubt I posted the correct meaning of the phrase from Weisman's American point of view. So far the only points you've made on this video are you don't think Proby mimicked John Lennon but he was a great mimic, he demo'd unknown songs for unknown singers and his manager in 2003 must be somebody's dirty secret.

rontenn,
You're here only because of anti-Proby sniping by people like me? Here you've "protected" Proby from someone saying Proby has veto rights on the airing of a demo of a song he wrote for female singers, someone saying laws protect copyright owners, someone saying a probyan's snide remark was seen as anti-Proby, and someone saying what kind of music sold in the U.S. in '64. And countless elephants and windmills were held at bay too. WOW! Where would Proby's career be without YOU on guard?

Well, this looks like more and more like a tennismatch with bjorn borg from the 70's.
Borg was atacked by anyone from Connors to Vitas Guerlatis They smashed from every imaginable angle...and Borg just returned the ball every time.
So...?
I feel it's the same with Ron T. Whatever he says, immediately people are on him like vultures and he has to defend himself.
In absurdum. Why? To me Ron is one of the kindest guys here on the tube. I can see why he now and then becomes a little frustrated.
Mickeslina 2 years ago
Mickeslina,
Swearing at people, calling them idiots, and demanding they leave a public forum he doesn't own is not acceptable behavior in most of the civilized world.
merrysnotproud 2 years ago
merrysnotproud You keep coming back talking rot about P.J. & I'll keep coming back to defend him. Strange thing is we're both fans!!!! What do you say to that?
rontenn 2 years ago
There is much more there than "drums and keys". An orchestra is definitely playing and we know that when the event occurred there was an orchestra there. Of course we have no way to know for sure from this video if the tape was authentic or if someone might have rigged it at a later date by combining an orchestral track with a vocal track. But it would have been an unlikely and expensive undertaking with nothing to gain other than sick pleasure derived from hoodwinking jimproby and many others.
merrysnotproud 2 years ago
merrysnotproud I've had a re-think about this Proby performance & it does sound like a heavy female Yorkshire accent right at the start saying 'it's one of my favourites". So it could be in a North of England club. In these clubs P.J. sang an amazing variety of songs so this could have been one of them. IF jimproby has got the location wrong then it's a genuine mistake & I propose we accept he could have been given the wrong info
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
Then what is your position on probyaffacionado's question about a big orchestra? You don't hear an orchestra and you agree with rockinjac that those are drums and keys in a club years later? Or you do hear an orchestra and they were commonplace at Proby's performances in those North of England clubs? Or the orchestra you hear was a pre-recorded track Proby used in his club gigs?
Are you saying that no one with a heavy Yorkshire accent could have been at the Midem event in 1968?

rontenn 2 years ago
Other American performers, like Gene Pitney and the Walker Brothers, went to the UK to revive or jump start their careers. It worked but they didn't assume their success there would boost their sales back in the U.S. When Elvis' record sales dropped in the U.S. he looked around, saw what people wanted, and revamped his style and image. Performers who wanted chart success had to either go where audiences wanted what they did, or change what they did to fit their audience.
merrysnotproud 2 years ago
Mickeslina,
I don't know what you mean by Proby being a threat but rontenn attracts arguments like a lightning rod. Someone in Sweden said they didn't understand why "Somewhere" wasn't a big hit in the U.S. Someone in the U.S. said by 1964 American teenagers wanted groups like the Beatles and new material, not covers of ballads by an unknown soloist. Then all hell broke loose. If people in the U.K. and Europe don't want to hear the real truth about the U.S. sixties music scene, why bring it up?
merrysnotproud 2 years ago
Can we change subject?
Mickeslina 2 years ago
Good idea! I will never understand why P.J. attracts so many people with negative comments! Ron
rontenn 2 years ago
I would like to express a theory about why PJ attracts so much negativity, even running the risk of starting a new endless debate.
In a sincere way, and not trying to point out some people as idiots, I believe that PJ to many is some kind of a threat.
He IS a totally unique singer, but even among ardent 60's fanatics he is more or less unknown.
Hence the idea that: "If I didn't discover him back then, it must be a sign he can't be very good."
Maybe it's simply a common human reaction...?
Mickeslina 2 years ago
It looks like rontenn is trying to pick a fight again. Why else would he throw out a line like Dean Martin was just a run of the mill club singer, or Gene Autry was just a yodeling cowboy? And then pretend all those "club dates" Proby did back in the '80s actually happened at the start of his career? As usual he brings up the "untrue publicity" subject out of nowhere. Only he knows what any of this has to do with the fact that American teens wanted to hear ROCK GROUPS in the mid '60s.
grizzlygalore 2 years ago
grizzlygalore
Thought you would pop up! I stated what Dean & Gene started out as in their early days! I don't know wha the hell you are talking about on the subject of club dates!! To finish, in the mid 60's all teens wanted to hear were BEAT groups! P.J. proved an exception!
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
grizzlygalore said AMERICAN teens wanted to hear ROCK groups, which is what American teenagers called them then. Sorry but as much as you would like it to be true, P.J. Proby wasn't an exception. Teenagers here bought Niki Hoeky later but it was the extent of Proby's U.S. chart success.
merrysnotproud 2 years ago
rontenn,
Proby people might have loved Niki Hoeky but evidently not enough to buy it since it didn't chart. What does buying or not buying another recording of a song from West Side Story have to do with class? Were Proby fans classier than Sinatra fans or Callas fans? Or Beatles fans? Proby's singing a Beatles song in this video so maybe he thought their music was classy enough for him. Not as classy as those American composers, Sondheim and Bernstein, but classy.

rontenn 2 years ago
probyaffacionado,
I'm not sure I understand your comparison of PJ to those artists and their records in the mid 60's. Most of those artists were recording great new material. Some of them already had a fanbase in the U.S. because of earlier hits. PJ had no history on the U.S. charts. Unfortunately starting out with covers of songs like Somewhere, Maria and My Prayer wasn't likely to make a big splash with teenage record buyers here.
nawlins4evah 2 years ago
nawlins4evah As usual...100% negative about P.J.
I say to you once more....get your facts right!
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
probyaffacionado and I were having a well mannered disagreement about why PJ's covers of Somewhere etc. didn't top the U.S charts. Are you comparing what the U.S. market wanted in 1954 to what it wanted in 1964? Not sure what The Cavern has to do with us but the Beatles first hits here were their own material.
About PJ's songs in 1958, many singers write and record songs for years before charting. Like PJ they have no fanbase who might buy whatever they record - including covers.
nawlins4evah 2 years ago
nawlins4evah I'm just trying to say that PJ did not start out with "covers". I actually hate that word. If someone improves an existing song & takes it to another level then in my eyes they "own" that song. PJ "owns" all of the so called covers he did in '64 '65 & '66 & that's why they all made the charts. He did them better than anyone else ever did before or ever has done since.Obviously the quality of his British hits was too classy for the USA & yet they went for a song like Niki Hoeky
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
I'd forgotten that Niki Hoeky didn't chart at all in the UK.
A shame since I'm sure as you say his versions are far superior to theirs.
nawlins4evah 2 years ago
nawlins4evah We didn't think it was awful, Proby people love everything he's ever recorded but some songs more than others. In most Proby fans top 10 of their fave songs you won't find "Niki Hoeky". Billy Eckstine was a very laid back kind of singer......you cannot say that about P.J. As for Gene Autry & Dean Martin I wasn't aware they started their careers as singers. One was a cowboy film star & the other the straight man in a comedy duo.
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
Granted, PJ didn't start out singing covers. Dean Martin was a band singer long before he became half of Martin & Lewis.
nawlins4evah 2 years ago
nawlins4evah I know all the of tracks on PJ's latest CD have been recorded many, many times by numerous artistes. I can say PJ does a fine job on all of them & some of them are better than the version's we've come to know & love. Gene Autry started out as a yodelling cowboy by the way. Dean Martin as a run of the mill club singer. They both went on to better things & I have no problem with that! I like 'em both but as you see P.J.Proby is my all time favourite & he can do no wrong!
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
Sounds like you don't think much of yodeling cowboy singers. Or singers who've worked the club circuit to survive. I take it then that PJ's always been above that kind of thing.
nawlins4evah 2 years ago
nawlins4evah P.J. struggled at the start along with the rest of them..I've never denied that. As Elvis once said "There's room for everyone". We've come the full circle now in this discussion.I love P.J. & every clip of his on youtube will always get ultimate praise from me. He's a survivor in spite of attracting all sorts of untrue publicity. That he's still out there singing, touring & full of enthusiasm & energy is tribute to his willpower, class & tremendously loyal fan base.

probyaffacionado,
Americans who remember the 60's know that by 1964 the era of great ballad singers was over. No amount of promotion would have convinced teenagers to buy covers of old Platters hits or songs from a 1961 film.
nawlins4evah 2 years ago
hi probyaffacionado I agree with you..if you don't like the song than avoid it. Ron

I think you must have PJ Proby confused with PETER JAMES!

grizzlygalore, I did ask you to find me some of these supposed comments you say I've left knocking other singers.I'm still waiting! Do you know why most of the fans are not reacting to your anti Proby comments? Its because they have all decided to stick together as one & not bother to react to your rubbish. I know this for a fact because the one or two of us that do react were also asked nicely to ignore you. Unfortunately I always find a pain in the ass like you very hard to ignore.
rontenn 2 years ago
theBESTelvis,
If PJ was ever top of the bill anywhere in the U.S. Where did you get that idea?
nawlins4evah 2 years ago
nawlins4nevah Once again you get your facts wrong regarding P.J.'s hits in America & the times he topped the bill over there. Do not ask me to furnish you with the real facts because if I do you will only come back with more trash comments.
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
I wasn't going to ask you to furnish me with squat. I KNOW what was going on in the business here in the 60's.
BTW smart artists who were charting well and making money in the U.S. didn't up and move to the UK.
nawlins4evah 2 years ago
nawlins4evah You THINK you know what was going on in the business in the U.S in the 60's. Only a fool would have declined the chance to appear on a Beatles TV Special at Epstein's invite. He said yes & made a fortune. P.J. became huge in England & the rest of the world. America being America thought he was part of the British Invasion which blew your music scene apart. Perhaps that was why he was only moderately succesful in the U.S. ....ignorance!
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
First you claim PJ had hits in the U.S. and was a success. Now you say he didn't do so well here because we're an ignorant bunch. Ignorant or not, we bought plenty of records by the Beatles, the Stones and dozens of other British and American recording artists. Pop record sales here were greater than the UK, Europe and Australia combined. If PJ couldn't figure out how to make it here I guess that's why he moved over to the UK.
nawlins4evah 2 years ago
rontenn,
I take it then that you agree with theBESTelvis that Proby has stood on people's toes.

Apart from brain failure it appears your memory has gone now!
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
Stand on my head? You talk awfully big on the web don't you?
The only one posting something bad about Proby in this discussion is theBESTelvis. When I pointed it out, you both tried to bury me in your usual plethora of profanity. So I'll assume neither of you wants to retract the comment about Proby standing on toes. Obviously neither of you has ever learned to say "oops, that wasn't what I meant". Most adults have.
castleontheriver 2 years ago
castleontheriver I'll talk big to you if we ever come face to face be sure of that!! You obviously have a different idea to me of what "Standing on people's toes" means. To me & most folk it means to upset people. P.J. has done that a few times over the years.
What's your meaning of the phrase??
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
Not surprisingly, you have given me a very bland definition of the term "standing on people's toes". To most people it means to OFFEND - not just upset - other people. Depending on the context, it can also mean to disregard the rights or feelings of others while pursuing one's own goals.
Since he hasn't bothered to explain his comment, it's obvious theBESTelvis doesn't care HOW his remarks are interpreted.
castleontheriver 2 years ago
castleontheriver theBEStelvis is obviously a very motivated Proby fan & says what he feels just like P.J.does! I fully admit P.J. has stood on people's toes at one time or other. He's in showbusiness, the hardest profession that exists.I can assure you that many, many more people in the business have stood on his toes!! On a lesser scale it seems you & I are standing on each other's toes in our opinions of P.J. I think he's the greatest..you don't!

rontenn,
Did I say I was a fan? With people like you claiming to be Proby fans why would anyone admit to being one? Any youtuber, fan or not, can comment on a video. If you don't like it, TOUGH! Where are all those fans anyway? They aren't here. Could it be they don't like your filthy mouth?
You've posted negative comments on videos of other artistes. Do you think people believe you just because you say you haven't?
If you don't like what I say on youtube get over it. It's not your call.
grizzlygalore 2 years ago
Hi grizzy If you are not a fan..bog off! If you are a fan then be ashamed!
Tell me who I've posted negative comments about? There's a big difference by the way between negative comments & the downright nastiness you unload.

castleontheriver,
No one could be as stupid as theBESTelvis appears and survive to adulthood.

I suppose you'll reply you're both fans of PJ You can guess what I'll say to that!(After I've stopped laughing)
rontenn 2 years ago
jimproby, this is just another con! there is no orchestra, it's in a club in the 80s, you can hear the people talking. The backing is probably just drums & keys, if you run this track through even basic audio software you'll see, the new description on "Feelings" would fit this track better why you & rontenn are trying to con people is beyond me. I asked people we know in Todmorden they said PJ often sang "A Day In The Life" but not "Feelings".....jack
rockinjac 2 years ago
Hi
For a long time all I could hear was poor vocals and no background, but after reworking for the first time I was able to hear orchestra and not just keyboard and drums which I agree was the backing for all PJ's club dates.
I used to live in west yorkshire and attended many of PJ's dates some brilliant and some not so, but I never heard orchestra (or false music as jims says) as in this peice.
I have checked with contacts in Walsden where pj lived and no one ever heard day in the life sung.
jimproby 2 years ago
At the start of this track you can hear, female : aaaw naaw. male: oooh it's ma fervrit one this. Was there a large fan base of northerner's, with thier cassette recorders (yet to be invented) in Cannes 1968?...jack
rockinjac 2 years ago
rockinjac You & 'er indoors are Proby fans..fine! "I asked people in Todmorden".....yeah right!
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
You're bluffing. Everyone isn't as ignorant about music ownership as you are.
nawlins4evah 2 years ago
nawlins4evah Who was talking to you!? You're getting royalty cheques? not from the tooth fairy I agree, perhaps some other fairy you know. Stop getting too technical for your own good & just listen to the song (or not). Your choice!
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
If you don't want people to respond to your comments, you shouldn't post them on youtube. BTW I couldn't care less about the sexual preferences at the corporations that issue my royalty checks. I doubt you would turn down the income either, even if you are a bigot. I'm sure PJ doesn't question who signs any royalty checks he gets.

theBESTelvis,
You won't win arguments with a vocabulary that's limited to name calling, obscenities and trash talk. It might impress some kids, but your posts just prove you can't add any real points to what everybody else is talking about. Besides why would anybody care what someone like YOU thinks about them?
Unless you own youtube or this upload you can't set rules about what is posted on it. YOUR comments might be more on topic if you'd wait till you're sober before you post.
nawlins4evah 2 years ago
@nawlins4evah
Im just speaking the truth, You are ya chums are sad, Whats up...PJ stood on your toes at some stage in your career ? And for your information i don't drink either,
theBESTelvis 2 years ago
nawlins4nevah Pricks like you make people resort to name calling because fans of P.J. cannot understand what you are doing leaving comments. You are obviously not a fan so why look at the Proby clips? You think you are always right in what you say, never wrong! There are lots of singers I don't like but out of respect I would never leave nasty comments about their music. It's pointless. Zip it & get a life.
rontenn 2 years ago
Waaaal podnas, ya got it straight from the horse's mouth! Rontenn says ol' PJ is pleased his fans can listen to all his stuff on youtube for FREE. CD sales? royalties? Noooooooo problem! It's all about what his fans wanna hear. So if you've got a PJP track, old or new or in-between, let 'er rip!
kendall156 2 years ago
kendall156,
Absolutely! Someone can fill up their "empty channel" with uploads of 20th Century Hits and Back in the Saddle tracks. Or that 2008 Bells of Christmas song. As jimmyproby has said so eloquently, it's important to "contribute to the youtube community"! Go for it guys!
grizzlygalore 2 years ago
grizzlygalore (or should I say Yogi Bear!) jimmyproby, lindgren & many others are all doing Proby fans a huge favour by letting them hear these obscure songs not available anywhere to buy. If you don't like some of them or think some are not up to scratch then that's just too bad! By the way every "community" usually has at least one bad/nutty neighbour.....ever considered moving?
rontenn 2 years ago
kendall156 You don't get it do you! Obscure tracks like this are NOT available to buy on CD as all Proby fans know so royalties have nothing to do with it. Any Proby songs old,new or in -between bring 'em on!
Anyone who doesn't like certain songs then don't listen! And don't bother leaving pointless comments.
rontenn 2 years ago
rontenn,
You are sure that Proby wants his "After Last Night" demo on youtube so that thousands (or even millions) of people can hear it - not just the fans that already know about it. And he of course knows that even more people will find it because of the reference to Jackie DeShannon in the description. It's good you are so "confident" about this.
theBESTelvis,
Feel better now?

castleontheriver 2 years ago
castleon theriver Are you a permanent p.i.t.a in life itself or just on youtube? Only mega stars (LOL) like Susan Boyle!!! get their clips viewed millions of times. For an ace singer like P.J. it's just thousands! I'm sure P.J. will have many sleepless nights worrying about his girlie demo "After Last Night" being on youtube. Why don't you get a life?
rontenn 2 years ago
theBESTelvis,
So you are saying that you don't care how PJ Proby feels about the public airing of his private demo. You only care about what you and other Proby fans ENJOY, right? And what is of uppermost importance to you is to shout at people who DO think Proby might have some rights to his privacy. You are a Proby fan?
castleontheriver 2 years ago
castleontheriver You are not right in the head.!

Did you ask Proby how much he likes someone putting his private demo up on youtube without his permission? In case you don't know, the words were written for a woman to sing and the demo wasn't made for public airing.

rockinjac 2 years ago
rockinjac,
You're obviously referring to the Cannes FILM Festival that was cancelled due to "May 1968" in France.

Does Proby know his demo of "After Last Night" is being presented on youtube as an early example of his singing voice?
inc2468 2 years ago
It's a shame that the people who keep putting negative comments on other people's videos have nearly all got empty channels? Anyone who puts on a video has the right to remove comments.
jimmyproby 2 years ago
Yet another hate comment at "jimmyproby", where are your contributions? it says on the listing of "After Last Night" that it's a Demo! and that Jackie De Shannon recorded it. Yes I would rather listen to that! I don't have to make up Alias's so i can go around Back Stabbing!. I know Jimmyproby considers all uploads and they are with the very best intentions. This Demo shows PJs incredible vocal range even as a young man, and deserves merit....jack
rockinjac 2 years ago
rockinjac,
Proby's "After Last Night" demo wasn't for public airing.
Last night he held me near, whispered love words in my ear...

rockinjac,
It seems you know absolutely nothing about songwriting or songwriters. Proby wrote some songs for women to sing that he would never have recorded for release under his own name. Many other male songwriters have done the same.
Did your mother name you rockinjac?

rontenn 2 years ago
As evidenced by the Billboard review that Lindgren33 posted, this performance was obviously an important and successful "day in the life" of P.J. Proby. With jimproby's explanation about the source of the tape, I think anyone (old fan or new) listening to this video could understand the reason for the poor quality. I for one find it an interesting piece of history and appreciate the work jimproby has put into it.
merrysnotproud 2 years ago
merrysnotproud As you say it's an interesting part of P.J.'s musical history & should be welcomed by all Proby fans. jimproby did his very best with this song to put it on youtube for us & like you I'm happy with it.

Thanks for the song.Quality is not too good but without jimproby's posting of this song many P.J. fans would not have known of existence. This is not to encourage new fans to his music, this is a sort of present to the fans who have been around 45 years! Keep 'em coming jim. RON

rockinjac 2 years ago
@rockinjac Sorry for delay in replying. Like many fans we all have hours of amateur recordings of PJ's work, most of which could never get uploaded, but this appearance in front of full orchestra I thought was worth the effort and many people have had a go at restoring this old sixties tape recording.
I only upload the rare and unusual and leave releases to others.
I still feel it was worth restoring, but maybe I am wrong. This is the best we could do.
Regards Steve.

Here´s what Billboard Magazine wrote February 3 1968: " A fine set from big-voiced P.J. Proby followed, and this included an excellent version of Lennon-McCartney´s "Day in the life", a difficult song which Proby sang with great panache."
