Stereo music a cartoon? Give me a break. I love these guys but that's poetic nonsense. Surround is no more "real" than stereo. They both are technological ways of listening to sound. Why should an artists goal to make "real" anyway. The music is what's important, not the way you make or how you hear it. Being profound or not profound is not the point of electronic music either. The irony? They are making something very fantastical musically. It's great but they should stick to music...no talk.
thank god fsol went back to what they are masters in: electronic experimental music, Gus if u read this, i know your best album is still to come, i´ll be waiting anxiously.
Im not sure I WANT, or NEED anything more than a stereo tho!! I think surround sound would definately work as a live concept, as in seeing a band performing live (altho FSOL dont 'do' touring anymore... :P) but as for home sound systems I think its a bit superfluous. It would be like having a 3D cinema setup for a telly!!!
I think he's just passionate actually . . we don't get to see musicians talk much if you think about it , ,especially about anything intellectual or conceptual . .musicians are supposed to be humble and cool and funny and let their music do the talking but that's an enigma cliche . I like the fact that FSOL attempt to speak and explore ideas and sound . .spot on !!
woiuld love to have been in that cinema hearing lifeforms that's for sure . .
It's great to hear a genius like Gaz speak so inspired again. Gaz and Brian, the greatest minds of our time. I'm an FSOL fanatic!! can't wait to see where they take us now.
Ambisonics "G-Format" can be carried on dvd via dts or dolby digital with no extra special decoder needed at the user end,the format lessens the 'hole in the middle' effect with many other advantages. There are lots of vst plugins (panners ect) for nuendo so you can pan anything its not just for sound field mic sources. If you google "ambisonic net"and " dmalham " there's lots of great info there worth checking out. thanks again for the inspiration. peace:) john
When lifeforms came out I recorded the most ambient sections onto 4 stereo systems and placed the 8 speakers all about my bedroom, some above me on the ceiling, even one below my chair. With the lights out I hit play randomly ,hahah it was awesome, total out of sync madness, yet there were these extra special moments where all the sounds seemed to meet, living and breathing together ,well its hard to explain...I'm sure you guys will create some amazing mixes. Some ambisonic links>
who knows what are the live shows between 4:00 and 5:00? when/where they were performed?

I have a 5.1 system myself, and I often find that it ruins the mastering, unless the music is actually encoded for a 5.1 system.

yea a bit pretentious maybe, but i do agree about the limitations of stereo. ambient music especially could be taken to a whole other level in X.1
