@TheE8gisell as some who danced for around 16 years of my life - the wig was the best thing that was ever invented for irish dancing :) as an 8 year old i can remember sitting for up to 3 hours the night before a feis (which was usually one every weekend) having perming rollers put into my hair - i hated it with a passion. and it was damaging my hair - full of split ends, etc when i got my first (and only) wig it was great - pop it on and go, I was ready in less than 5 minutes :D xx
@TheE8gisell I love my giant wig! I named it Fluffy! And my 2 bun wigs are Bunny 1 and Bunny 2. As someone who knows the "old days" of curling hair and outdoor feisanne, the wigs are a freaking blessing. I'll never go back!
@fulconer Yeah right dude. I lost more hair curling than I ever have with wigs. Plus, if you know how to put a wig on properly and don't wear it continuously for a good while, you're fine. Quit trying to psych people out. Also, if you check the article that says that, it's pretty out of date information wise, even if the publication date is recent. We're pretty darn safe as long as you know what you're doing, with few exceptions. There are exceptions, as with everything, just not many.
@reelburke You'll be totally safe by simply not curling AND not wearing a wig.
What wins a competion is superior technique & execution.
A good judge will see past the superficial and cosmetic. Since all competitve dancers wear wigs these days, it's now an even playing field. So why have wigs any more? Makes absolutely no sense to perpetuate a redundant practise.
Natural hair all the way .... safe, simple, beautiful, honest, classy
@TheE8gisell As you said, you're a dude, so you don't understand. In the olden days, girls dressed in their Sunday best when they danced. Curls have been a part of ID for years. Simply combed and washed hair doesn't cut it, especially since most girls would have to wear their hair pulled back so it wouldn't be in their face while dancing. In the rules for this organization, it says your hair must be neat and not in your face. Is it possible to dance without it? Yes. But it's also a pain.
@reelburke These wigs are not practical; they are too big, cumbersome and crude. Did you ever see a ballerina wearing one?. They have no place in Irish dancing.
@TheE8gisell Sorry, I thought I was replying to fulconer; I don't know if you're a dude or not, so if you aren't, I'm sorry for my lack of attention. HOWEVER. IDers are NOT ballerinas. Not even CLOSE. Our costume is completely different, so you can't compare the 2. And they aren't "big, cumbersome and crude." Some of them are big, but it's the dancer's choice to wear them. I have a big one and two bun ones, and I love them. They DEFINITELY have a place in ID, and will for the foreseeable future.
@reelburke I don't see anyone in Riverdance wearing these huge wigs....does Jean Butler wear one?.....What about the brilliant, world class Irish dancer Joanna Doyle.......absolutely not.....these wigs are an embarrassment and have no place in Irish dancing.
@E8gisell Not technically correct. I believe (not sure) that Ciara Sexton used a wig in one of the newer shows of LotD, because I'm pretty sure her natural hair is shorter. Jean was mainly before wigs got popular. Also, this is not Riverdance. Most of the costumes they use would be completely against the rules. Wigs aren't an embarrassment-if you have a problem don't wear one. But I remember the days of natural hair, curling it the night before and sleeping on the curlers--they were terrible.
@reelburke I would indeed look funny in one of those awful big wigs, given that, I had my first Irish dance lesson in the mid 1940's in Ireland....and I'm male....I have to add, that the costumes worn by you 'Irish Step Dancers' would be completely against the rules also....its not a wild west shindig you know.....it goes without saying, of course, that you were brilliant and I very much enjoyed your Irish dancing.
@E8gisell I agree, this was a brilliant piece. Love the showiness, great respect for them dancing on that floor. :) Love the steps, too--I miss doing treble reels at shows, and their steps were perfect for the show. But I do have to say, their costumes are completely within guidelines. I have no idea what wild west thing you're talking about.
@E8gisell Obviously you don't know Irish Dance as well as reelburke. Wigs are part of the culture of ID and in competitions you would get marked down for not having one. Wigs are worn all over the world now at competitions. Lord of the Dance and River dance DO break the guidelines for competition, those are more just for show. Most people think that ID comps. are wonderful, but have you seen the TV show Toddlers in Tiaras. ID is like that, but worse and masked by the beauty of the dancing
@E8gisell I danced for 6 years, two of them at a national level. When I was 10 I tore BOTH of my ACL's at a competition. I was afraid to dance until now (i am 14) which my parents wont let me go back to competing, so i am just dancing for fun.
@TheE8gisell its actually one of the reasons why i quit - i couldnt stand havent that horrible thing on my head while dancing , and also the fact that yound girls were wearing making and fake tan to a feis!
Wigs aren't tradttional. They are recent additions over last couple of decades, just like the raising hemlines ... the fashion. Unfortunately seems like they are here to stay.
Wigs provide stoic presence and emphasizes jumps/movements of the dancer. It works but wigs still suck.
When i started dancing in 1998 the girls had to Curl their hair them selves, but from what i heard from the teachers and judges they wanted the girls to look identical hence the new wigs.
The school performing is the The O'Faolain Academy of Irish Dance
i was at the st. pas parade (only cause my irish dance school was there but i couldnt be in the parade) but do you know which school of irish dance it was?
This is the O'Faolain academy of irish dance! We just finished the downtown st louis St. Pat's parade. This is in union station. My fiance' is the only guy. I just started dancing a few months ago. It'll take a while before I'm anywhere close to them. One (the blonde right after the guy) is an open champ!
Why are there always so little guys? My step dancing class had two guys in it when I first started and now they don't come any more. I'm hoping to get this good soon. I'm an adult beginner at the Niall O'Leary school in New York City. We're supposed to do a recital in June.
I don't see these groups without the wigs any more. It's the way it is now. And this group's uniforms were less extravagant than many I see. I liked it.
wigs originated with the tradition of irish girls curling their hair after sunday mass at church and the tradition held up. dancers today don't want to hassle with curling their hair everytime they have a competition or a show (which is often if you are good) so we just started to wear wigs. it's mostly older girls though. also it looks better if your used to it. its kind of un-normal not to wear a wig.
Thank you SO much. That is the best answer I've gotten so far. :) I posted a question on Yahoo Answers and my only answer was that "It is an exaggerated version of the typical Irish physical trait." I just couldn't imagine that being all there was to it. You know? Thanks.
@schpoopy Actually, from what I've always been told (by multiple judges/teachers) is that curls make it look like you're jumping higher. Curled natural hair doesn't have the same bounce that a wig does, thus we wear wigs, (even if we hate them, lol)
I'm sure that there are multiple origins, though, of where wig wearing got started. =D.
I'm an Irish dancer, and I, too, think the wigs are a bit odd. If they looked like normal hair (as they used to) it would be easier to watch. I prefer to curl my hair because it looks more natural.
i was a dancer in the 60's and 70's and we didn't wear wigs. They LOOK awful, the crowns ridiculous. A tradition? Why do you all have to have curly hair that is fake. Just put the emphasis on the dancing. Also, it is time for originality,
Actually, there is no tradition of hair curling in Irish dance. If you observe pictures from different eras of Irish dancers, you can see that the typical hairstyles tended to be whatever was fashionable at the time- even straight hair.
The curls at all cost mentality came into play in the 1990's, and I didn't see any wigs worn at all until 1994.
@schpoopy the wigs also make it easier for dancers to change their hair style for different dances. Most competion girls do different dances at shows and, since hair is counted as part of costume, it makes things easier to deal with.
@Borriss78 Almost every Irish dancer wears wigs now days. Especially when the compete at a Feis. I have been dancing for 12 years and I am now and Irish Dance teacher. Even my little beginners wear them when we perform. I also have studied at the Irish world academy in Limerick and even my friends their have worn wigs for Feis! Yes they may not look "natural". But thats how it is, everywhere! "jatpackegg1005" explanation of why underneath.
