  • if this is true than how come an adult mind can manipulate the reality more effectively than an inquisitive child or teen? it is because the real physical world is governed by constant forces and relies on constant truths. As someone who recently has undergone the change between the two frames of mind i can say that while the two frames of mind are separate the adult one is reality, however sad that may be.

  • @matthewclark757 no no no. The adult mind has become far more stubborn and ridged in its perception of "physical reality" through repetition of sensory perception... That is to say, the longer you live in a human body, the more your sensory perceptions define what you are able to comprehend as "reality"...

In truth, our human senses are nothing but a means of interpreting the wide variations in the subtle patterns of vibration that constitute our universe...

What you see is not what IS...

  • @Baxxter101 very nice make-believe you have there. but no seriously people see what is because it is what is. the universe is made of particles and energy, both of which are definite and measurable and not vibes and patterns. those two things are derived from motion of energy and particles. also it seems you believe in a theory of detatched spiritual thought which i will admit is debatable but in no way supports your claim that the reality we all perceive is not the true nature of existance

  • @matthewclark757 ah yes. you make some valid points, but as I am guilty of, they're also half points. True the universe is made up of matter and energy (and their anti forms), but can you truly perceive the behavior of energy, or particles? No. It is only possible to observe and interpret the results of specialized measurement tools.

I do argue that perception is not enough to constitute a true "reality" because it is well understood that every individual perceives the same differently.

  • @matthewclark757 My point on the rigidity of the adult vs a child's mind is that its perception operates mainly by following patterns learned in childhood. That is, curiosity about possibility diminishes as we find the most functional modes and patterns of perception that allow us to survive well in our current environment.

"reality" is a subjective concept, as is "true nature of existence" for no other reason than that we cannot personally perceive it objectively.

  • @matthewclark757 so to sum up, the reason you view your adult consciousness as reality is because it is what you are currently experiencing as your reality... Though this alone does not mean your version of reality is any more or less valid than any other possible version. They're ALL valid.

The only difference between the reality of an ant or a reptile or a human is perception, and importantly the patterns created through past experience... A baby has no frame of reference, adults do.

  • "'Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'" (Matthew 19:14)

  • Agreed. Adults are too serious and believe that their logic is unquestionably correct all the time. More often than not we lose sight of simple truths and forget to keep delving into some incidents because of our limited experiences and education. This Watts has it right.

  • Yep! So it's always good to keep the inquisitive childish mind with us :)
