The most interesting thing about this movie ("O") is the different damaging psychology ploys of persuasion that are currently being utilize in this American society on targeted individuals and in the media, in order to satisfy strategic objectives that has no relevancy on anything righteous and/or upright.
we're reading othello in my ap lit class. everything they do is a result of elevated passion and jealousy. were gona watch this movie after we're done. soo excited. loll iago btw, is a complete twisted sociopathic bitch.
its amusing to see people thinking they know shit when they watch this movie comparing it to real life lol...this is ALL based on shakesperian play OTHELLO!Get your facts straight before posting your idiotic comments.
I know people hate when you compare the similarities in this film with real life now i.e. how black athletes are obsessed with these fake ass white virgins etc. how pathetic. It really smh on this and it is truly sad to say the least. All of you on here that decide not to deal with this aspect are well just ignorant of the context in which I am referring.
Great Video Clip! I would love to let you in on a great film, inspired by Shakespheares Othello, Desdemona: A Love Story. If you love "O" you will love Desdemona: A Love Story, A Maverick Entertainment Film available now at Blockbuster and Amazon.com!
I was so upset with this movie the virgin white girl and the black athlete obsessed with her and how he wants her etc. It was pitiful and mekhi s only reason for living is if he can have her PLEASE. I could have vomited this was the most profound piece of garbage that I have ever seen and I cannot believe it was even made. There are enough stereotypes on here to start a revolution.
...calm down, it's just a movie for christ sakes. Geez! Besides, in case you haven't caught on this is a remake of the classic play Othello. This was how it was written!
Stereotypes? You're the only one that brought up black this and white that. ...hmmm.
O is so strong and confident on the court but with everything else, especially with love, he's so insecure and vulnerable. Trust was such a big issue between him and Desi and when he thought about her going behind his back, it drove him insane. and I REALLY hate the ending, but this is one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies. I think it just really sucks that Desi couldn't get a word in and was strangled to death. I think in the original play, Desdemona tells Othello that she loves him.
@NewEnglandSportsDude She never cheated on him, they set her up because they knew he would go crazy and do something to mess up his shot at making it big in basketball.
i bought this movie of of amazon because i love it and Josh Hartnett and Mehki phifer and the indian boy looks sexy in in BUT MOST OF ALL JOSH HARTNETT LET ME FIND SOMEBODY THAT LOOKS,SOUNDS and HAS THE SAME STYLE AS HIM
I cant believe O let him manipulate him like that and he used Desie as the key to his vulnerability, what a twist this movie was but believing everything some guy tells me will not drive me to kill myself and my GF because in the end I'm the star basketball player I can get any girl I want on campus it aint worth it, Also the dunk was ill sonnnn!
After so many years i still feel the pain and hate when i watch this movie. omg i truly dispise hugo i hate him and even though this movie was great i hate the ending i truly wanted o to find out that hugo was playing him but he just allowed this guy to mess his head up, and i mean he naver even questioned mike or told dessie that hugo told him all of these things he just accepted it so dumb. anyway thats just life envy is such a bad thing it can desroy alot of lives
@mightyblack1 Most defintely. "Fight the power," of 1989, is a classic, and a wake-up call for us all; the lyrics to said vid must be reflected on, as they contain fundamental truths: the CIA must stop the drugging of low-income areas; the people must unite against all tyranny, which is mainly in us, i.e, domestic.
@mightyblack1 Well, as a white person let me tell you the truth about white people. We're not snitches or snakes, we don't go behind other's backs. As far as white girls.. there a whole other story. But dude, white people aren't bad. That's just stereotypes man. Don't believe that shit. It's like saying mexicans are baby manfactures and chinese are sly. People are people, don't base on color, only on the person.
@tylernsharp07 I don't trust none of you and you might be a nice person but I'm not falling for the banana in the tail pipe.Every job I worked at there were white people railroading black people out of thier jobs and of course there were black bootlickers helping your people doing the dirt.400 years and counting there's nothing to make me want to trust none of you,and it's fucked to see alot my people hating each other but loving your people more, that's a illness on my people that yours .
@kashmiriguycali4nia hes the "moor of venice" so while we all think hes black...he could have been Morrocan or of Arab decent... :) either way he definetly was not white and had a darker complexion
It's easy for Mehki to play a mad character yo to see Mehki, sticky fingaz, omar epps, and fredro star in the same movie was a trip cuz these dudes are know for having short tempers
@b215apple not true.Josh Hartnett had a sex scene with a black girl in August ahhh and the scene is on here too lol Julia stiles is not the only person to do a sex scene with a black person LMAO

I really enjoyed this movie. I have seen it before, however I was looking for the full version of Othello, starring Lawrence Fishburne. Do you happen to know how I can get my hands on that copy?
Fine. I give up. What's the point in trying to have a serious discussion with someone who's so monolithically transfixed in their own opinion they can't for two seconds consider the value in another's argument? You can refrain from replying to this one. I give up, you've one, this is your page now. My energies can be better spent, I'm sure.
i love the end the part where he give that speech saying how he wasnt no drug dealer or gang banger n how he said this white boy fucced up my life that was the best scene in the movie
Besides, whoever modernised this must have had about two seconds and fifty cents on his hands to do so. Othello's black, so obviously he must play basketball. Desdemona's white, so obviously she must be a blonde cheerleader who goes out with a basketball player. Jeez, that kind of stereotype is nearly as bad as the Early Modern England racism that inspired Shakespeare to tackle this story in the first place.
Well, you're a brilliant one aren't you. Othello was a Moor, and an General in the Venice army because of his superior military skills. How else can a modern reenactment interpret this? It only makes sense for Othello, or 'O' in this case, to be the star player of his team with the most popular girl in the school. As for the racist comment, have you read Othello? The man was a god to his countrymen and soldiers. The only person who could be considered racist is Iago, because he's jealous of him.
I'm studying Shakespeare at MA level and trust: "is Othello a racist play?" is still an open question. I don't think it is, but I think it addresses the issue of racism: Brabantio disowns his daughter because she's married Othello, and the only reason the Venetian magistrates don't intervene is because Othello is useful to them. For the rest, I just don't like stereotypes (Shakespeare's heroes never were), and I think the acting in this is appalling. Now, please can continue voting me down.
How is it a stereotype? I see nothing here that could be considered a stereotype. Othello - great warrior. "O" - great athlete, same concept, different times. Desdemona - Adored royal woman, loved by everyone. Desi - Popular Cheerleader, same concept different times. I don't see any stereotypes there, I see a variation of a Shakespearean tale that fits in with our society. For someone going for a masters in Lit, you obviously have some catching up to do.
... I've just had a thought - of a way in which this film could have kept the teenager angst but more closely mirrored the socio-political situation. Jump back a few decades, to a time where mixed-raced schools have only just been opened: people would be in two minds about a black basketball player, because they're but he's the best chance for them to win the game. Just as pretending to tolerate Othello was the best chance for the Venetians to win wars. Give me that, better actors and i'm happy.
at 43 seconds in, i had to stop. And I'm not elitist: I've liked Luhrmann's Romeo+Juliet and thought Di Caprio was a pretty accurate Romeo; Ethan Hawkes is mind-blowing as a young, lost, modern Hamlet. But how is this Shakespeare? There's none of the original language, emotion, fire. Julia Stiles is known for murdering every heroine of William she tries to interpret - Desdemona would have never have shouted back at Othello, for one. Do your homework woman. Please give me Maggie Smith any day.
this movie is awesome, it's so sad and tragic though. julia stiles is perfect for those shakespeare adaptions, amazing and incredibly talented actress!
