Imelda May has a lot of the same singing qualities of Diana Krall. I just heard of Imelda after seeing her on Jay Leno (The Tonight Show) tonight, so, admittedly i'm behind the curve a little bit, but she is one incredibly talented woman, that is for darn sure. She is a true star and has one hell of a career ahead of her.
Usually Beck is outstanding, but the tone is all wrong for the song. Again, Beck is a GREAT guitarist, but this time I think he wasn't on top of his game.
@guitarslim56 Your statement is illogical. I may listen any number amount of times again and perhaps change my opinion, but it doesn't mean I WILL change my opinion.
Who's "we"-- popularity does not = greatness. I wouldn't have compared her to anybody, but she chose the song and I was responding . Etta or Mahalia ? I've heard Imelda before, good voice, but she tries to sing beyond her capacities-- doesn't have it to belt out or an R& B which I've heard . You/ anybody can get upset just 'cause I disagree?? Com' on. I'm sure there's some singer whom I think has a great voice, and you and the "we" disgree. It's a great big world, so again, I say Chill
You know Marielena...you are right..people do have the right not to like a voice for qualitative reasons..hey it just does not hit home with you..and good on you to stand by that..
However.. when you start knocking down specific qualities of her voice that we know are exceptional...such as the strength...etc. comparing it to Peggy or Nina...you lose lot of us..
heck if you are talking about strength why not compare to Etta J. or Mahalia J. instead..
she just doesn't have the voice, it's weak-- like the greats, Julie, Peggy, Nina Simone, and like that--- maybe if she stuck to her own songs. Disappointing
It is difficult, even sometime unwise, to tackle a classic like Julie London's 'Cry Me a River', but Imelda May nails it, down the echo at the end. Awesome!
Can't people just enjoy her version of the song without the usual "I think so-and-so's version was/is better", etc. It's not a competition to see whose version is 'better' so just listen and enjoy. If you prefer someone else's 'better' version then go and listen to that instead. Not exactly rocket science is it?
Written originally for Ella Fitzgerald's role in 'Pete Kelly's Blues' - but it was rejected! What was Jack thinking??? Lovely rendition of this classic tune.
@EEEEELAD I'd be interested to hear Julie London do it the way Imelda May performed it here. Live, straight no chaser with Jeff Beck.... no pressure then. ;-)
Marielena......seriously??.......I guess sometimes to satisfy the need to stand out against the tide of admiration....criticism is rendered whether deserved or not...
some of the tone in her voice while singing this song reminds me of the great Karen carpenter
