Life on Mars is some of the worst campy cop drama drivel I've seen since the 70's, so in that regard, I guess it is an authentic period piece to some degree. Other than that, I can't think of anything good to say about it. If it was a comedy, it might be good, but it's not.
What a freakin' spaz Sam Taylor is. "What year is it supposed to be?" Yeah, R Tard, your buddies reconstructed the Twin Towers while you were sleeping, and convinced the whole city to drive around in pre-1974 cars just for a practical joke.
Keitel is certainly one of the more competant(Believable) A merican actors around. He needs someone like Tim Roth,to complement his role, instead of that guy who played sam-who just was too 'wooden'.The American Gene Hunt, needs a similar sarcastic style of humour,to that of Dirty Harry or to Popeye Doyle.Callahan&Doyle made me laugh, with their sarcastic humour.I think Tarentino, needs to inject a bit of black humour in this.Like sticking a suspects head down the toilet or giving them a beating.
The American was OK up until the final episode. It revealed that the entire series was actually...I'm not kidding...a virtual reality simulation. So basically, I watched all those months for a Bobby Ewing-style copout.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who was very annoyed by that.
there is no one better for this role then HARVEY KEITEL...americas cast was way better ...john simm is great sure, but JASON OMARA was cut out for the role...feel free to disagree
Sorry, being British and loving the UK version, and the spin off Ashes to Ashes I have to disagree! Whilst I'm sure Harvey Keitel is a good actor in his own right, Philip Glenister brings a humor, lack of political correctness and edge to a role which is rightfully his! The british version of this intro, in my opinion, is way better... but again each to their own opinion, feel free to disagree!
I loved this show at first, but I'm rapidly losing interst. If it wasn't for the fact that he traveled back into time I wouldn't really care for this show. The stories are good but aren't done that well, the show is rather bland if you open your eyes and take away the time travel part. I give this show a B- as it stands but take away the Sci Fi part and you've only got a C- show on your hands.
This isn't very fucking believable, Harvey Keitel has nothing Philip Glenister on this role.
So why fuckin' ruin it? Because that stinks of complete fuckin' ignorance.
The fact that over here we have to be force fed American Tv, yet the average American can't take the same from programmes over here, with out "remaking" (destoying) them.
In the UK we've had a lot more exposure to US shows than they have to ours so remaking the show is essential: Do you honestly expect the average american to understand references to the half built 'mancunian way' bridge in episode 1 of the British show? Half of Britain wouldn't appreciate so what makes you think America would? All the references have to be modified to make them relevant to american 70's culture, otherwise the real selling point of the show is lost you simple-minded dicks.
I disagree. To make a defensive comment like that in response to a perfectly balanced point does make you very simple minded. Only a simpleton would get on the defensive. My point was that the original series excelled because of so many historically accurate cultural references to the era and city of Manchester. If you take that away, you dillute the impact of the show. I guess that point went over your head. You are simple-minded after all. Fuckwit.
Geography is not the point. Surely the concepts behind the original story are universal? Surely anybody in the word would have the common sense to understand the characters' roles and motivation without having to directly transpose it to their neighbourhood.
Because they seem to be tosspots. Jumping on other peoples ideas and ruining them. Instead of doing what they are paid for. i.e. coming up with ORIGINAL ideas THEMSELVES.
Im watching it and I think its a great show I dont know why people are bitching it wouldnt have worked it just makes more sence for the jokes to translate into Amarican Culture. we have more of a Smelting pot of ideas most of the shit in the UK version would have made most think the Brits were off there rocker
Fucking appauling

Colm Meany was in the pilot, probably could have done something with it. Keitel is a great actor but simply too old to make the part work.

Harvey Keitel is amazing in Reservoir Dogs and in Pulp Fiction, and if anyone was going to take on this part he was the best bet.
but even so, this bothers me. Gene Hunt IS Phillip Glenister, and seeing someone else saying the lines just... argh. it doesn't work.
Plus, Harvey comes off as kinda... old. and weak. that punch was very unconvincing.

I would love to see a matchup between the REAL Gene Hunt and Harvey Keitel.
I wouldn't fancy Harvey's chances.
It would end with REAL Gene Hunt getting him in an arm lock spitting in his ear:
"You have the right not to impersonate an officer of the law! Raymondo, take this burger-belching ponce to the cells!"
jazzx251 1 year ago
@jazzx251 The REAL Gene Hunt??? Do you mean Phillip Glenister?

It will never ever be as good as the original. What is it with Americans having to remake stuff. This is garbage.

I think Life On Mars should have been remade as a feature length movie, not as another TV series.
Steven Spielberg should have directed it and Will Smith should have played Tyler.
Think Shaft meets Back To The Future.
Would have been huge.
