4 months in the hospital and Im pretty sure he was in a coma. his wife teaches at my school. I think it took over a year of PT. And I personally heard his story when he spoke at our school.. great motivational/inspirational speaker, and yes he is back at it!
my uncle helps curtis with his sprints and i have heard he was pronounced dead 3 or 4 times on the way to the hospital luckily he is still racing to this day and i have also heard from my uncle that curtis' wife won't let him go back to knoxville.... scary stuff though but thats the price of running sprints
holy shit!!!!!!!!. and i thoought that i'd seen it all. i was there when scott kalita died. that was another head on impact but ive never seen that kind of wreck in a sprinter. they were going id have to say probably close to 90 mph when they hit that thing.
I am glad that both have moved on since then. Have not kept good tabs on Curtis but know he did try racing again. As for Kim, his son went on to be the IRA's 2009 Rookie of the year, following right in Dad's footsteps.
I was in turn 3 that night shooting pictures. Kim had such high hopes after what he went through the year before at the Nationals. When the saftey crew got him out of the car, he gave them a big hug. I remember walking over immediately and the first thing he asked was if Curtis was OK. I told him that they were they best and he was living proof of that. He acknowledged and we walked to his hauler. Scary? Yeah, you could say that.
we were pitted right where that happened..we thought for sure he didnt make it.the right side of the cage was gone..it was really bad. he came back once since then and crashed in the same spot...
That was a bad one, I remember seeing that. They didn't replay the accident on SPEED, probably because how bad a shape Curtis was in. As for people saying it was intense being in the pit area on this; the craziest story I heard was my grandpa at Manzanita. Standing in the corner in the infield, next to the photographer, and axle came out of a sprint car and went right through the person he was standing next to, and killed him. This must have been in the '60's or '70s. RIP Manzanita.
its scary when shit like that happens expesially when ur right in front of it! I was standing in the pits and out track olong that fence on the backstreach and a sprintcar nailed the gaurdrail about 10ft infront of the fence and holy shit it scars the hell out of you!
I was there for this as well, sitting in the stands near turn 4. Absolutely ugly. I knew immediately that this wreck was bad, but they still had some drunk fools cheering. When they took out the white sheet and covered the car, I thought for sure he was dead. Apparently you aren't supposed to use a white sheet if the person isn't dead. (At least that's what I heard.)
But still glad he made it out OK. Huge balls to get back in there & race again; I woulda called it a day.
The more I watch this, the more it's eerily resembles the Dawley Larson crash -- again wingless. Larson flipped like Boyer did first and Dawley was unfortunate because he hit Larson just as he was flipping and was the recipient of some parts out of Larson's car. This crash is similar but very minor in my opinion compared to that night in '79. This looks violent, that was violent. Again, looking for anyone who was there that night.
If anyone was there that night, did this remind you of the Darryl Dawley and Roger Larson crash even though it was wingless and coming onto the front straightway? I was too young to understand and was always curious about that night but yet this video has an eerie similarity of it?
And of course if you were there, there was the obvious a child should not have seen involving both drivers. The red suit will always haunt me. The funniest thing about that night even though nothing funny about it, about a month ago I found out who won that race that night.
I dont know to what extent his injuries were in that wreck, I heard a bunch of different stuff, but I can tell you he is still racing today. I saw his name in some ASCS results.
I remember the tarp being put over the car. That's when I knew it was serious. But now that everything is okay -- I would like to see a better quality film of the wreck.

Nothing compared to Dawley Larson. That was just flat out sick. I don't know why they raced after that.
