what's really great about this clip is it shows the relationship between Sarah and the Berlin Phil through her career at that point. If you look carefully, many of the members of this performance were also in the performance of her playing the Paganini Concerto around 10 years prior. The principal flutist, members of the violin section, etc. Thought that was kinda nifty.

Amazing how varied the opinions on Chang are.She's certainly talented and plays very well, but for someone raised on Francescatti, Szerying, Oistrakh, Stern, Kogan, Milstein et. al., this is really not such extraordinary violin playing. The above mentioned all recorded this piece and many are in youtube. Compare for yourselves. And I'm not talking abt. "musiality" or "interpretation" (a word I detest) - just simple, purely objective technical mastery of the instrument.

It's dates 1717, Guarneri was very young when he made this Violin, as a result, it didn't have the distinctive growl and explosiveness of a usual Guarnerius. Thus you can say, that this is the most "reserved", or should I say, "mild-mannered" Guarneri out there. And I'd say, she's very lucky to have this Violin, you'd be hard pressed to find another Guarneri like this

Hehe, that's a nice observation. Yes, it is true that her Violin is mild-manered, but so it happens that she is an aggressive Violinist. Even if you do have a sweet sounding Violin, if you play aggressively, then the sound will be aggressive. Yes, I agree that she is matched with her Violin, because if you give her a normal Guarneri, it'll be even more aggressive than it is already
