This was one of those "accidental" discoveries for me some 20 years ago. A local station was playing it late at night and I caught it midway through. Janet Margolin's beauty was the first thing that caught me right away. Since then, I've gotten to see the entire movie and it's one that only grows in stature everytime I watch it. This scene is one that is so simple and yet so beautiful, it almost makes me cry everytime when "Lisa" realizes she's "A Girl, a Pearl of a girl." So beautiful.
I had never heard of this movie until I picked it up last week on Laserdisc in a Los Angeles thrift store---along with "Glen and Randa" (how is that for 2 boy/girl movies in totally different worlds?) The photography and use of background music are exquisite, allowing the talents of both actors to shine through in their portrayals of "David And Lisa." I almost wished that this had been shot in color because both actors are good looking but no, black & white is perfect in making this a "classic."
One fine piece of moviemaking. Has that early 60's kind of feel, bit cold and harsh, but leaves you feeling uplifted. "You can make it if you try." DVD appears to be available at amazon dot com, maybe elsewhere too. I had a crush on janet margolin too. What a babe.
What a beautiful film. When I was a young teenager, I didn't have the opportunity to see this film. Keir Dullea was all over our teen magazines at the time and the articles were about this interesting film. I enjoy watching something now that was so out of reach for me as a young person.
I've only seen the remake of this movie, and I thought it was outstanding. Unfortunately I can only find a few scenes from the original, but from what I can tell, the newer one follows this one terrifically; that's rare for remakes. =]
I wish I could find the novel it was based on, too, the story is so fascinating. I can't get enough.
I saw it when I was a young boy circa 1960s. If it's the same movie I'm thinking of there's a dream sequence scene where there heads are superimposed on the face of a clock and it use to freak me out a bit.
my school is putting on thsi play right now. i'm playing lisa and i absolutely love it!!! any one know where i could watch or rent it?

A pearl of a film. A forgotten gem. Janet Margolin reminds me of Anna Karina...

Janet was too good for Hollywood. We were robbed of an impressive talent, as proved here. Keir Dullea is so young here!

I have seen the remake of this, wasn't bad. I would really like to find the original version, it seems as though it would be better.

It's a must see. Think of it as the template for Benny & Joon
