Nice review, but you can assemble the same kit alot cheaper and with higher quality equipment, by doing it yourself. I can understand some one who has no experience with survival buying this pod though. would like to see a reveiw on how the stove works also.
I looked up these pod prices and they are insane. Why not make your own with some PVC or some of those little real estate info boxes you see on the for sale signs everywhere. Any thing would be more economical then Gear pods with a useless pouch and a fall over cup with a stove that loses it's legs if you move it.
100 bucks thats rape. if any one buys this take the rape whisle rite out and blow it loud. 1 u can make that kit under 20- 30 bucks and cost on this to them is like 3.99
i never see a demo of the alcohal stove usage....and from what i heard the esbit tablets only warm it up ...no go for roaring boil...what were your results ? stove but looks like it would tip over alot ...the bottom design needs redone.
Gimmicky little piece of equipment. Some of the items included in the kit are worthwhile to have when venturing out into the wild, but the whole tube thing seems to be a waste of space and weight.
best thing to take for starting a fire is one of those square shaped 9 volt batteries and some steel wool. Just rubb bothe leads of the batter on the steel wool and instant fire.....
I see what you're saying on the straps but if you use them as MOLLE attachments they need to be tight to work well. Good call on the pouch that's too tight. It seems like a good product for people who don't have the knowledge or the desire to build their own kit. It does seem to use some extra space with the nylon bags. The o-rings keep things dry so why have the bags? You review some pretty nice stuff, and I'm glad you're getting gear info and survival info out there for the people. Keep it up!
again I agree with everyone elece. Nice review but that should be called the yuppy pod.. $5 a zip loc bag and you save alot of weight and money.. just my opinion.. but obviously im not their target customer.
ok, what is the fanny pack you have there? I like it's size a lot. I'm looking for a new pack to replace my everyday purse (I carry a mini-backpack as a purse already, but it's just not "quite" what i want). I want my Bob to be my everyday carry basically.
went to the gearpod site. I like the concept, but I don't like the plastic pod, nor do I like the price. except for the stove that you show here, I could put this kit together for about $5.00 or less. you're paying for the plastic tube/container.
i agree with the gimmick statement nice review tho i hope the maker takes a good look at the pack you could fit allot in that small tube also in case of emergency seams like it would be hard to get at that first aid kit !
After I had a look at the Gearpod site, the tubes themselves look very interesting but to get them out here in Aus, it would be probably too much especially the postage.
i think a stremlight stylus pro would fit its a aaa flashlight one led battery really bright. i like this little kit, seems something good to have in the trunk of your car or in the bottom of your hiking/camping pack as a just incase thing.
I like watching your videos. These are really neat. You can buy a water bottles and add your own stuff to them. I use a good hacksaw blade for a saw, but I just bought a folding saw. I carry cable ties with me also.
Thanks for the review Kev. Hopefully the company takes your advice and others from this board to make a few needed changes to there product.
The items that I have in my hunt/hike pack cost less that what this item does, with more or extra items in it. This would be good for those folks that are just starting in hunt/hiking or are in a hurry and dont have the time to make one. $100 is $50 to much.
'gearpods' ... really? You gave Kevin this product to review, which in turn, means you are opening up the board for discussion from viewers. Yet, you intentionally wait for someone to say something negative about this product (like an outrageous price) and you immediately rebut it, trying to add that it has this and that which makes it worth the $100 price tag... If you are going to give away a product to be critiqued, you are allowing your product to be criticized. You need to let that happen
It's a good idea, but for $135, I would go see what I could find at an army surplus store that would function similarly and add my own gear. There doesn't seem to be more than $40-$50 worth of tools/equipment in there, so it seems like you are paying $100 for a plastic tube and an attractive case... a good idea, but not very economical. Good review though.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
To clarify GearPods Backcountry - the model Kevin reviewed - is $99.95. That includes the survival kit, a separate first aid kit, cookmug, stove (with two solid fuel tablets), container system and (for a limited time) the fabric tube.
ture he can do all that hom sel and make a some thong to car it in and keep it dry and it may bit a bit of money for it
BUT for thoes who never gone camping or how to make it if they do get lost this does give them a good idea for what to have and if they do get in trouble they do have some thing for it
All of this can be bought and made on your own, but the convenience of have small, useable, and dry gear is what this is ideal for. This seems ideal for the weekend hiker, family hike, or Boy Scout camp out. I understand that a real hiker or someone going on extended trips will indeed have their own ideas for what works for them, but I think that this gear fits well into what I perceive to be its intended use/consumer. Great Review.
I like the idea of that gear pod but I cant see spending the cash to buy it. Some PVC pipe and proper fittings at the ends would do the same job and Im sure you have some of those items already laying around. Some of the "gear" seemed a bit cheesy for me also. But for someone that hasnt taken the time to build a kit of their own this would be better then nothing. Thanks for the review good vids as always. :)
One other guess: on the stove, the reason for the design of the bottom being at 50°-40° slant is in the event of a tip-over, might spill the contents but not the fire?
I'm with the rest on the outside pocket: multi-tool usage. But, in the event you want a additional flashlight, and in there, more than just Maglite available.. Fenix, Coast, Surefire, etc. Was a bit surprised to see flame orange come out of camo tho. Whew! The webbing, um, perhaps for clipping things?
And you're all right. The side pocket 1.5"x5" was defined for a compact folding knife or multi-tool, larger firesteel and/or a narrow profile flashlight (e.g. Solitaire).
It looks like MOLLE webbing , it wasnt designed to put a 1'' fastex buckle through. Also maybe they intended the outside pocket for a multitool or something not a maglite.
You said that you couldn't get the buckle thru the strap on the Gear pod... what if you took off the adjustable buckle, put the starp thru and then put the adjustable buckle back on...? just a thought....
Good item to have....however the only problem I see is that some of the stuff in that kit is way too small....I know that in survival and backing things, you want small, but I wish the compass, LED, knife and saw were just a bit bigger. Other than that good stuff as usual
A quick way to attach the pod if your method is not available is to carefully cut the sewing on the molle to release two sections (creating one larger section) on each end to slip the clips through.
You may need a strap with a slide buckle instead of side buckle. Something where you can feed the belt/strap through the webbing and put it in the slide buckle and cinch it up.
overall how would you rate the dependability of the items? I mean did they seem to be flimsy or were they designed to be actually used in a survival situtation?
you can get mini mag lights that would fit in that pouch.

Overall it's not a bad kit but the lack of shelter and cordage is something you'll probably regret :(
Also bin the maglite. Put a Swiss Army Knife in there. One with a saw.
