although i love love the weeknd i agree with this him!!!!! if abel changes the subject matter a little his music will advance...don't get me wrong the weeknd is my one of my favorites, abel tesfaye won my heart, butttttttttttttttt i have to agree with this guy in some of the content
This guys is stupid. He should have done a lot more research on who the Weeknd is. Its one man, not a group. You arent even cute and what are you looking at the whole time?
i took a listen, and after the 1st listen i didnt like it, it took a few spins(more than usual) then i loved it! he is right the song-writing isnt very good, but the nigga can sing!!! the best thing bout the thing is the production man, it literally sounds like sex in music form, i'd give it 6or7/10
And you gave that Echoes of Silence mixtape an 8, then. You're a rather unpredictable guy, aren't you? But the fact you really dug one of his efforts make me more respectful of your opinion, it shows you're not just bashing it because it's R&B. And I have to say, I've given Echoes a couple of honest listens since you made it your favorite Weeknd release, and though I thought House of Balloons was untoppable, I'm increasingly starting to change my mind.
You seem to know what you're talking about all the production/sonic experimental stuff but I don't know how you give it 3/10? Just because it's about drugs/sex? You're entitled to your opinion obviously..I thought it was a damn near a masterpiece myself & pretty groundbreaking for a new artist to come out of no where with a whole mixtape independently free [better than most commercial albums] and not trying being a cookie cut out sheep following song formats & made-for-radio singles to sell out
all the kids stickin up for him either need to listen to the mixtape and get it in to the ish...or stfu..you fux KNOW this was a shitty review and he should take it off for the sheer fact that he did poor research into the dude..and yeah its his opinion, but his opinion speaks for more than just him though the number is few lol so eat dick to the ppl who are jaded and XO till we........well you know the rest ;)
1. Even if The Weeknd DOESN'T use auto-tune, Anthony still brings up many other points as to why he doesn't exactly enjoy it.
2. OK, we get it, The Weeknd is one guy, this doesn't mean that everything Anthony says from then on is incorrect. It's a minor mistake.
3. For the love of god it's his own opinion, if you like The Weeknd so much and think he's great then that's fine! You should be listening to his music, not insulting everyone who dislikes
but he doesn't really use auto-tune... he has a really great voice.... and i can't get over the "they" and "them" and "these" ....clearly it's a mix tape.... you don't know shit about music i guess...
its obviously HIS fucking opinion so dont get mad and talk shit. if you expected it to be awesome no need to come here and watch reviews which are obviously always gonna be the persons own opinion which doesnt have to be yours ugh.
I appreciate your opinion and I still think you do great work on your album reviews but I think this one you and weeknd's latest, you have really slept on. Alot of his songs have a waaay deeper meaning than what I think your hearing. For example take the videos of "what you need" and "the knowing", you see the different meaning in them. I respect your opinion however. Great work
dont you think if The Weeknd was a Tool he wouldnt be famous!?! He's an amazing singer so fuck off and keep your negative reviews to yourself fuckin Attention Seeker!
@90mv A lot of Weeknd fans are 13 year old girls though lol
I agree with Anthony completely in terms of the lyrics too. I told a friend that the lyrics were lame and he looked at me like I was crazy...I liked Echoes of Silence though
Your a fucking lame, your think your so intelligent and poses vast knowledge of not only R&B but MUSIC in general.Your an ingnorant FUCK. The way you project your self on camera is not how you would in public. Your a fucking loser, THE WEEKND IS THE BEST. and i hope your bald becuase you have cancer.
Did this guy just give a negative review on 'House of Balloons?" I'm sooo confused right now. Who would give "The Weeknd" a bad review? I think you should give H.O.B another listen!
everyone is entitled to their own opinion so I cant knock you for yours but I think this MIXTAPE is amazing and the main reason you're not feeling Abel Tesfaye's aka The Weeknd's work is cause u cant relate to what he's singing and also cause something is wrong with your ears....what songs were autotuned?
yeah i just wrote a hate comment on his review of Take Care saying that he doesn't know good music , and now watching this i can confirm that this guy is a fucking idiot and should never listen to music ever again.
The Weeknd is ONE PERSON, Abel Tesfaye. Abel's voice is in falsetto for the entire mixtape, he does not use auto-tune. I think his lyrics and drug references are deep rooted, not "Jersey Shore" like. smhh
i respect anthony for saying what he thinks.. he's not supposed to please you, he's supposed to say his opinion on the album his reviewing. and thats his opinion, to my opinion you shouldnt be offended.
usually you are on point with your reviews and i really enjoy watching them. i dont understand how you could give this a three and echoes of silence and 8 it just dosent make sense. Obviously there both great but this mixtape is on a different level.
In the unescapable black hole of pseudo-erotic blandness that is known as current R&B music, in my opinion, The Weeknd from a sonic standpoint (Along with Janelle Monáe like you pointed out in the video) is nothing short of a fucking miracle. I agree with your point about the lyrics, I feel that's the only thing holding him back.
I somewhat agree with this review. When RnB songs use rap terminologies like hoe, bitch, shawty etc etc. it gets on my nerves. And The Weeknd does it way too much. He thinks its supposed to generate some sort of strong emotion in the listener but rather it comes off as distasteful. Leave the cursing to rap.
@chaosinorderrr the weeknd is more than R&B he created his own style. there are no rules in music. you can do whatever you want. hoe bitch fuck shit get the clean version and STFU!
@jessandman why are u being so harsh for no apparent reason? i disagree that he's "more than RnB"... he's very much RnB. n sure you can do w/e but it doesnt mean it will always sound good. u cant curse on a choir track and say "deal with it". some things just don't mesh.
This, as well as other Weeknd albums, takes time to grow. Anthony, you can't just dismiss somebodies music altogether because they fit your perception of a "tool". Much of the subject matter is relatable, and if it is not then his fantastic vocals, atmosphere, and originality should be enough to enjoy. A 3 basically is calling this garbage. Most hipster bands with little to no talent are deserving of this, but it seems your priorities are opposite of others. You were wrong on this review.
@AlecMilamMusic He made no reference to the Weeknd himself being a tool, specifically the character portrayed in the music on this album.
Also, he was done hundreds and Hundreds of album/track reviews, articles on music, and hosting his own radio show. I say that classifies him as being of the nerdy type when it comes to music.
He made a single mistake out of his many videos, so take a chill pill and come back when you're done portraying the douchey tool that Anthony was just talking about.
@AlecMilamMusic Also, he specifically states in most of his reviews that this is HIS opinion, not definitive fact. It's kind of why he wants to hear YOUR opinion at the end with "Do you love it? Hate it? Why?" instead of you just throwing witless insults at him.
I also like that I can relate to his music because he's 21 and Im 20, so we are kinda going thru the same things in life from a age stand point and he hits the hammer right on the head with his lyrics when it come to relation to MY life. Not to mention the guy is a VOCAL ANIMAL!!!
I can understand where your coming from, but.... I really like the series of Albums/Mixtapes The Weeknd has been releasing. Im a HUGE fan and I have become an even bigger fan as the weeks go by. His music is sometimes dark but its soothing and calm. It keeps you "chill", and being that I am a pothead, I like music like that.
@WatsDaWurd you're a dumbass. obviously he doesnt make the beats. Actually i dont know the guy so he could but lets say he doesnt. neither does drake or lil wayne or whoever the fuck else. but people dont say shit like hey drake is a rap group. its just one guy rapping.
@jessandman first of all, calm the fuck down. second of all, it's Abel Tesfaye who does the vocals, and Doc McKinney produces the beats on this album. i understand it's not a group, but don't insult my intelligence, or anyone else's. it's just not right, they teach you that in grade school.
@glaxglax what are you even saying you're a dumbass too. nobody gives a fuck about the production team or the mix engineers or the intern or the owner of the label. people want to hear the ONE guy singing.
@jessandman what are you like 15? If the production didn't matter then Souljah Boy, Lil B and Mac Miller wouldn't pay out the ass for Clams Casino to produce for them. The reason people listen to those shit-stains is bc the Clams beats they're using are incredible, and most young people (like you) pay little attention to the lyrics anyway. Also your example about Lil Wayne and Drake is just stupid bc they don't have ONE producer like The Weeknd does. You are so ignorant it's almost offensive
@kaisamsa Take Care is soft, really, really soft. I'll listen to Danny Brown, Doom and Kendrick over Drake any day. I don't think he's a bad rapper at all, but his lyricism isn't close to Danny/Doom (who almost never rely on hooks to break up the verses), and Kendrick raps about shit normal people can relate to (never the case w/ Drake). I'm just not a fan of all the corny ass hooks and bullshit singing he does. I'm trying to listen to verses not rapper-crooning - with or without auto-tune.
@glaxglax I'm just trying to enjoy the music. I have yet to hear Kendrick, but i really dig Danny and Doom. They're all different styles, but i enjoy them all.
Everyone has their own opinions but thing is... most of the things from his opinion are false. First, he's using most of the drug lyrics as metaphors. As you can tell when he says "you can bring the love, I can bring the pain." He may or may not do drugs, but even if so oh well it's a trending thing now for people to get fucked up. Also The Weeknd is one person cause he used to be with other 2 people and they were called The Noise. But my point of the matter is, don't preach what you don't know.
Lmao! The hate comments on here are so pathetic! All the guy was doing was expressing his opinion and you people get all bitchy and complain about it. He doesn't have to like the album just because you guys like it. Let him think what he wants.
your a fucking idiot man only reason why you would care if he was a tool is cause tools would always fuck with you when you where younger you faggggggggggg smoke sum fucking weed and relax n y the hell are your glasses hella big its 2012 not fucking 1978 dumbass
And yes he autotunes. If you make music you would know that he did heavily use it as an effect on the first 2 projects and that it's notably more absent on EoS.
You guys complaining are so lame. You liked the album and so you wanted to watch a review to agree with it? His criticisms are totally valid. Since HoB the album's lyrics have gotten much better. I enjoyed listening to it the first time I heard it, but I don't think it really has the replay value in a literal sense that most people give it credit for. That's why everyone wants the new Weeknd albums right away. Cuz they're bored after 2 months. BUT - this review sounds like a 5/6 not a 3.
This is a cogent review. I basically agree with it although I think I would give it a slightly higher rating because some of the songs make for enjoyable listening albeit with weak songwriting.
Dear Anthony Fantano, you're probably the biggest pile of dumb shit on the Internet, specifically on YouTube. There are so many things you got wrong in this review, that it makes you look very unqualified. Research a little more before you start making judgments.
i kinda like the mixtape but fantano shouldn't be shit on for not liking the record. its an opinion you guys disagree with, its not like he burned down a fucking school.
Heres a quick review thats not coming from an idiot who has no idea of what his talking about. Quality album, the lyrics are much different then any other artists which is why idiots like this man assume it's "coming from an MTV star perspective". The production is amazing, fuck the haters and the dumb reviews made by idiots on Youtube. Go make it out in the real world then maybe make a review L0L. haters come at me. 10/10 album, great job The Weeknd.
your a dick...... Your Sympathy hes not asking for hes just showin people the truth The weeknd is trying to Show that life aint to fuckin cracked up Hes a lyrical magacian and hes very verbal so he can prove a point His emotions are much like a warning to people and he knows people can relate to what hes talking about but him being so into his lyrics its really brought out a deeper side into peoples minds and i think thats what hes aiming for Talking about addiction and sex and money For a point
You're truly an idiot who doesn't know a thing about music:) I hope you plan on listening to this tape and The Weeknd OVER AND OVER again because Abel is just amazing. How can you possibly call this guy something as low as a tool from jersey shore? His lyrics are some of the realest things out there! The production from Illangelo was amazing as well! May I remind you it was a free project? Did you hear the follow up mixtapes? Its 2012. I cant wait til his album comes out and you start kissing up.
how can you review an album when you closet yourself to new types of differing emerging styles of music which dont appeal to you????????? ah welll its your opinion
I miss days where Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield sang songs about topics with actual consequence. The obsession with the club/sex scene has eroded R&B since then into the stale, cliched genre it is today. Granted, the instrumentation in this album is impressive in places, but I agree with your stance on the lyrics. The image of a sexually-driven, submissive male makes for obnoxious lyricism time and time again. But R&B artists stick to that mold because it's what appeals to the widest audience
@arsenalmanz I don't think The Weeknd (or any other contemporary RnB artist for that matter) actually lives the kid of life they depict in their songs. I think they WANT you to think they live that kind of life because that's what sells. I will agree, the instrumentation is a drive away from conventional RnB. The lyrics, however, are stale and cliched. Today's RnB songwriting formula (write a song about pining for some lady) stifles innovation across the genre, including this album
@jwall115 nah bro, The Weeknd used to be a duo consisting of Jeremy "Zodiac" Rose and Abel Tesfaye, Jeremy left the group and Abel kept the name "The Weeknd" do your homework man.
lol bro stop acting like you know more than you do about music. the way you review all of your albums make you seem like you don't have first hand experience with playing or producing music. And youre biased dude, pretty biased.
Bro do your research before you start giving the bestest albums a fking 3/10 .. LOL get some swag and flavor for music bro you look like a nerd talk with some style
Although you sound like you know what you're talking about....you honestly don't know shit about alternative r&b. Fyi the weeknd's production is awesome. and by your pompous review you're the only one looking like a tool....tool.
although i love love the weeknd i agree with this him!!!!! if abel changes the subject matter a little his music will advance...don't get me wrong the weeknd is my one of my favorites, abel tesfaye won my heart, butttttttttttttttt i have to agree with this guy in some of the content

The reason people listen to those shit-stains is bc the Clams beats they're using are incredible, and most young people (like you) pay little attention to the lyrics anyway. Also your example about Lil Wayne and Drake is just stupid bc they don't have ONE producer like The Weeknd does. You are so ignorant it's almost offensive
glaxglax 1 month ago
@glaxglax Lil Wayne is SHIT, Drake is THE shit. Take Care is awesome, except for 3 songs.
kaisamsa 1 month ago
@kaisamsa Take Care is soft, really, really soft. I'll listen to Danny Brown, Doom and Kendrick over Drake any day. I don't think he's a bad rapper at all, but his lyricism isn't close to Danny/Doom (who almost never rely on hooks to break up the verses), and Kendrick raps about shit normal people can relate to (never the case w/ Drake). I'm just not a fan of all the corny ass hooks and bullshit singing he does. I'm trying to listen to verses not rapper-crooning - with or without auto-tune.
glaxglax 1 month ago
@glaxglax I'm just trying to enjoy the music. I have yet to hear Kendrick, but i really dig Danny and Doom. They're all different styles, but i enjoy them all.

Hmm this seems like a really weak review. Anthony is letting a lot of personal opinion and projecting into this video but hey, it's an opinion blog.

i LOVE this CD, because they are not like other R&B artists, that is what makes them LEGIT & UNIQUE.

He really just was off on the review. :/ The ONLY one I really think is wrong.
hornsofdavid 2 months ago
Everyone has their own opinions but thing is... most of the things from his opinion are false. First, he's using most of the drug lyrics as metaphors. As you can tell when he says "you can bring the love, I can bring the pain." He may or may not do drugs, but even if so oh well it's a trending thing now for people to get fucked up. Also The Weeknd is one person cause he used to be with other 2 people and they were called The Noise. But my point of the matter is, don't preach what you don't know.

lol he gave EOS an 8/10 but HoB a 3? The Weeknd sucked after this album lol.

Lmao! The hate comments on here are so pathetic! All the guy was doing was expressing his opinion and you people get all bitchy and complain about it. He doesn't have to like the album just because you guys like it. Let him think what he wants.

ovoandthatxo 2 months ago
And yes he autotunes. If you make music you would know that he did heavily use it as an effect on the first 2 projects and that it's notably more absent on EoS.
ApexPredatorCanada 2 months ago
@ApexPredatorCanada but he used it as an effect not to sing a whole cd or song.
jessandman 1 month ago
You guys complaining are so lame. You liked the album and so you wanted to watch a review to agree with it? His criticisms are totally valid. Since HoB the album's lyrics have gotten much better. I enjoyed listening to it the first time I heard it, but I don't think it really has the replay value in a literal sense that most people give it credit for. That's why everyone wants the new Weeknd albums right away. Cuz they're bored after 2 months. BUT - this review sounds like a 5/6 not a 3.

FINALLY people are noticing that this guy is a DUMBASS
TheGijoemusic 2 months ago
This is a cogent review. I basically agree with it although I think I would give it a slightly higher rating because some of the songs make for enjoyable listening albeit with weak songwriting.

Dear Anthony Fantano, you're probably the biggest pile of dumb shit on the Internet, specifically on YouTube. There are so many things you got wrong in this review, that it makes you look very unqualified. Research a little more before you start making judgments.

What is this man saying? go fuck yourself.

IREPLYTOHATERS78 2 months ago
You're truly an idiot who doesn't know a thing about music:) I hope you plan on listening to this tape and The Weeknd OVER AND OVER again because Abel is just amazing. How can you possibly call this guy something as low as a tool from jersey shore? His lyrics are some of the realest things out there! The production from Illangelo was amazing as well! May I remind you it was a free project? Did you hear the follow up mixtapes? Its 2012. I cant wait til his album comes out and you start kissing up.

NorthpawProductions 2 months ago
@NorthpawProductions but people that sing about such stuff live those types of lives , and anyways its a drive away from conventional rnb
arsenalmanz 2 months ago
@arsenalmanz I don't think The Weeknd (or any other contemporary RnB artist for that matter) actually lives the kid of life they depict in their songs. I think they WANT you to think they live that kind of life because that's what sells. I will agree, the instrumentation is a drive away from conventional RnB. The lyrics, however, are stale and cliched. Today's RnB songwriting formula (write a song about pining for some lady) stifles innovation across the genre, including this album

lol bro stop acting like you know more than you do about music. the way you review all of your albums make you seem like you don't have first hand experience with playing or producing music. And youre biased dude, pretty biased.
