"dat yankee accent" was one of a few choice journalists like Wilfred A. Lee, Emory Cook and a couple of other "Yanks" that made some excellent docu's and recordings of T&T's history, along with other islands. So glad for folks like them!
Thanks for this wonderful footage. Time does march on and there seems no holding it back. We have the same carnival problem in London. They do say the older ones amongt us hark back to the past for some sort of comfort and we usually choose a time about 50 years before. My parents used to do that, whatever the reality of life at that time.
Thanks so much for this. I remember being a child in the 80s when costumes were still creative and of course Mnshall in all his glory. Now there is so little creativity and the one band which always wins now is a Minshall rip-off at best.
This is 1960 guys... In 1960 Sylvia Braithwaite, parading as Elizabeth 1 from the band Ye Saga of Merrie England won the Queen of Carnival Title. 1959 was Relics of Egypt... Trust me, I would know this...

TRINIDAD DOES NOT WANT THEIR CARNIVAL THIS WAY ANYMORE... so those of us who are of Trini descent, we are going to bring it back, and help it evolve into an aesthetic that doesn't mock Brazil. Mark my words. Soon people will be leaving Trinidad to go to a Carnival that's better than theirs, if they don't go back to this kind of creativity. It's the mas makers fault. People will play what they have... so all they have to do is make something worth playing.

Compared to this old footage, Trinidad carnival is no longer something to behold. 99.9% of every band is a 'beads and feathers and bikini' band. Yeah, it's great for men to get their rocks off... but it's not a spectacle like it used to be. That's why I love this footage. In America, we're going to bring back that kind of aesthetic... Trinidad doesn't want it anymore.
