Hey tlmurray68. Your beautiful story is a song in itself. But remember you and I are the lucky ones. The ones who got to experience a love like that. Yes brief, but still something that left an impression on us for the rest of our lives. Here's to songs like this allowing us to ride shotgun on a time machine that has express travel plans down memory lane........
Walt Gaines went home to be with the LORD today after a long illness in Los Angeles. Keep his wife Barb in prayer and the family. He is free now! FOR REAL!
Remember driving back to the base every Sunday night Michael? We were in your 65 Mustang and listened to this song so many times. Then Viet Nam happened, I met someone, you met someone.......that was 42 years ago and I have never forgotten you.
This song brings tears to my eyes, it is so beautiful. It is a shame that guys today can't let loose and be free to express their real feelings for a lady. If only he had been persistent in his pursue of me we could have had a big time love. oh and by the way he was a marine and from the land of liberty.
In 1963 my marine took my hand and lead me to the dance floor in the base club, he held me tight and me just melted together he was too shy to tell me how he really felt so he was using this song as a vehicle to let me know. I was to shy to know so we lost each other but today I realize that he really did want to be with me, ah the pain of love lost.....he haunts me to this day by the way he was from PHILLY.
Just a classic "blue lights in the basement" song. Man, does this bring back so many happy memories. A lot of stuff today's kids wouldn't understand about love, relationships, and togetherness, esp. in terms of my community that I grew up in. My, my, my.....Thanks for posting!!!
Ahhh, the mellow sounds of the Oldies Groove Yard. Can I get a witness...Thank you for posting this fine piece of music. I am just kicking back and enjoying every note, every tone, every thought in this song....Ho down with Motown....
This has to be one of the most beautiful songs I can remember Thank you Motown for all the wonderful years,it will never every be another Motown,Mr.Berry G you did that I tip my hat off to you and Motown.Old School will always be remembered
man this song is really about love.. unlike other songs that be saying bitch this and bitch that, sleep with her and shut the door.. this song is real talk.. thanx for posting :)
Man..., the Bronx, house parties (called house parties even tho' they were all in apartments), red lights and a sweet honey "grinding" to this song, "Stay in my Corner" and other great songs.
One of my top favorite songs for memories of my youth....
My husband Indio is always singing this song to his wife Sandra this is how strong our love is. We are both so emotionally in love with each other forever.. I love you baby and always will stay in love with you.. I'm not ever going to stop loving you babe.. Forever yours your wife Sandra Calac...
These songs were the best. This was a time when people still danced at parties.
The kids today can't even imagine the romance of yesterday!
Love, love, love it. I have them all but this is one that escaped me and am so happy to have stumbled across it. It brings back such fantastic memories!!!
@angmis3 I felt like i'm in a discotech, where we call stay in. those were really the days where you can feel fun and soothing music, i'm riding on my time machine feeling the soft shoulder of my childhood crushes,.....mdn
all I can say is I'm glad to have ever felt this way about a woman.....and man these guys have captured that.with this song.....god....I loved that.....girl......way back then......
I sang this song in the 8th grade. I was in the school talent show. That was 1970. That began my popularity with the girls...that was 40 years ago..wow!
Ohh!! I totally FORGOT about this sweet song. Thank you for posting it. 1969 = awesome year. Man walked on the moon, and Ford dropped the 429 into the LTD
I'm sorry to hear that, this comes straight off my 45 rpm, and sounds pretty good really, maybe a CD would be better as it's mastered perfectly isn't it? I hope you find one, try searching with a search engine for the music store near you or online etc? Hope you find it. JOHN
I love this song!!! This and "The Bells" are my favorites by them. I agree with you MowtownMagic1959; they are VERY underrated. I was born the yr. before this song came out and I have seen VERY few photos or shows with them on it and this was the ish and STILL is!!! How many shotgun weddings were because of this song (smile)??!!
Love these comments, I was always an Originals fan (since the 60's!!) have you heard my other uptempo track I put on YOU TUBE by them, it's called "Suspicion" from 1965 and was very popular here in the UK. I thought they sounded like the Isley Brothers on that one, really brilliant, just type it in the search on here and you'll be able to hear it :-) JOHN
Thanks for the info. I had no idea they had other songs besides "Baby, I'm For Real" and "The Bells". Those are the only songs I heard growing up as a kid.
Yes, you can click on my name on the right-hand side profile and see all the Motown I've put on here, about 221 so far I think? they are all ones I really liked and lesser known but just as good. :-) JOHN
Written by the late, great Marvin P. Gaye and his then wife Anna Gordy(the bosses' sister). The Originals were another underrated group lost in the vast valley of Motown's talent. my1ytv,hope you see Big D again..........
my dad use to always listen to all the old school music and i could never really understand why he loved it until i grew up and sat there and went thur all is old music when he past away and now i understand why it's great and they are really saying something it will never go out of style
I don't think any film of them exists as far as I know kgbronx631957 it was so long ago now, but they were a very great favorite of mine from the 1960's as was all the other singles I've put on here. Many thanks for your comment. JOHN
Hey Motown Magic, there was video posted of them singing this on some show, and shockingly enough all four of the singers in the group shared lead vocals, it was funny, because all they all sound so much alike!
I'd have liked to have seen this video NJNupe1911 as there is very little video or film of The Originals in general but I thought they were very underrated and unique back in the 60's as did useverlastin too here! Thanks to all for commenting. JOHN
Hello beautiful, you know what they say.."Pretty girls love pretty boys"...Yooooo Yooooo thanks for the love and now i'm showing it to you back! Have a great day and great week! May you enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!
That is so sad. I would've loved to see them because I was always curious about them. It just seemed like they had those 2 monster jams and just disappeared. I hope they have some photos somewhere, but back then, they weren't think about saving stuff for the internet. Google or Motown may have something, provided something was saved.
Come on now! it was so long ago! It's really that they were so unappreciated! It's sad that they wre but thak God for youtube! It really gives us some wonderful moments to remeber if the really great acts who were so underrated but brought to life now by their families and friends. (IT's a shame if no one can find film!!!
Thanks for your comments it's nice to see that things about the old Motown artists crop up now & again more recently, and the music pops up in movie films quite often, I'm glad to see that here in the UK they had Gladys Knight telling us on TV about tour dates in London & cities with the Pips, so she is still going like Martha Reeves & The Vandellas! JOHN
I love this song. Although this is the original, I think the best version was done by Esther Phillips from her LP 'From a whisper to a scream.' I hope somebody posts it because it really is beautiful! Makes me think of loves lost......
Great pictures sometimes I wish i was alive back then great music and people knew how to love. Grat song, lyrics and vocals. The Originals were one of the greats.
Gosh, I loved this song soooo much. Would you believe that I heard this song the 1st time when my boyfriend in Vietnam had this song on a tape he sent me. Memories....I remember he said, "you've got to hear his fine song" and I absolutely loved it and I still do...
Wow, that's your granddad??? You should be very proud. Your dad and the Originals were an incredibly talented group. In my opinion, they were one of the best R&B groups coming out of Motown...
I LOVE THIS SONG! PURE SOUL! Someone had a video posted up of them singing this on a tv show, I had no idea that ALL OF THEM SUNG LEAD ON THIS SONG! AMAZING!

Marvin Gaye's is the artist that I most identify with.
I tried emulate his music earlier in my life.
This brother was so sensual...
His Music did provide sexual healing for many of us during lovemaking
The first time I made love, "I want You" was playing on my cassette deck.
His music helped me, and HEALED during some very trying times......
These songs are dedicated to Nicci. Girl you were my first love
I think of you often....Thank You for allowing me in your life
