When I came out off jappanese prison camp this was what i first heard, Deanna Durbin and all her movies in the open air in Indonesie. I never forget it how beautiful it was after all that and now being 75 I can see it again it makes me feel very happy again, Dinkie.
It is not power but projection with the "centering" of the tone which leads to the brilliance heard in her youthful voice. Durbin trained with a Vocal Master Andres Segurola. Please listen to ADA SARI sing the Caro Nome and NINON VALLIN sing the Casta Diva, both on You Tube and you will learn something. There are many more from that era. There is NO one today who can compare because the vocal tone has been corrupted by vocal teachers who have no compehension of singing
Well Deanna Durbin sang this aria at age 14 for her first movie...Beverly Sills sang this same aria at age 8 for a TV show in the 1930's. Both did a marvelous job but kudos to Beverly who sang it before the age of 14...Sills always said that though her career lasted a short time in the 60's and 70's, she had been singing her whole life since being a little girl in the Depression
Nadine Conner was a Mozartian delight .Andres Perello de Segurola begin with Deanna in 36 ..the now demodé gracefull mimics were a strong principia in Deanna misse en scène
Well I've listened to Anna Netrebko's version as you suggested. As much as I appreciated listening to Anna, I still prefer Deanna's version - she was 13/14 years of age with a shorter coaching lifespan whereas..............
Ah! Vieni! ah vien! più non tardare! a me! Ah vien! nell'ebbrezza d'un amplesso ch'io viva! Ah!
Deanna Durbin, Sissel, Kiri Te Kanawa, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Julie Andrews... all ladies with a very special talent - no gimmicks or marketing, just genuine talent.
Don Andres perello de Segurola impress in Deanna the vocal mimicks of Amelitta Galli-Curci,Lilly Pons, etc then was the mode...my auntie was supporting his daughter making that kind of face niceties..i keep a photo in Segurola aula during a visit of Deanna to Barcelona and they appear together singing and Victoria de los Angeles is nearby...Vicky at 60 still were making nice face gimmicks to publicum while singing...scuola Segurola
Sadly, it just wasn't always practical to put entire arias in a movie like this. That is why every song Durbin ever sang in a movie she also recorded commercially. DDurbinFan has posted a recording of her singing the entire aria here on Youtube.
@ipmoic She sings the entire number in the short movie, Every Sunday, which also features Judy Garland, who sings Americana...then they reprise both songs as a duet. I think the film is on YouTube if you want to look for it.
Charlotte Church is a pop singer. She and her contemporaries like Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson etc. are not even to be mentioned in the same breath as this great soprano. Deanna is the major inflence behind many of the great sopranos today like Renee Fleming and Kiri te Kanawa. I hope Church influences no one.
God bless you Deanna. You were pure, innocent, and had such angelic virtue unlike the "women-girls" of our time. So gracious and good, and that voice totally beautiful like an angel singing in a valley of lilies. And, honestly I was born in the 70s, but I still admire you.
SPECIAL DEANNA!!! when I look at the absolute rubbish that they call films today, I can only say thank goodness we had these wonderlful films in our day as standards
This is such a fun song to sing..it really gives the vocal chords a workout.
Of course, not as much a Magic Flute!

I didn't know she was criticized for her looks. I think she's lovely, too, and her voice is beautiful. She was a little coloratura prodigy.

Too bad she doesn't sing the entire thing. Today it would be that much more valuable. What a delight to hear this lovable warhorse. On the lips!
