  • Saw these guys back in February is San Francisco, one of the most honest performances I've ever seen, they were so appreciative of the fans, the bass player literally had tears in his eyes during one of the songs because the crowd gave them an ovation that lasted quite a few minutes. and that guitar tone spanks.

  • no such thing as punk, its just rock n roll brought back to its most basic form

  • @CrazyDan1984 Oh, shut up.

  • Follow us on Twitter @WorldWide_DEATH

  • @DEATHWorldWide Come to calgary Alberta preaze

  • Finally looked these guys up after reading Times article like two or three years ago.

Reminds me of HR - Bad Brains for sure.

    I dig it.

  • Shut up nobody invented punk

  • yeah this is bad ass. thank you.

  • holy shit 75 these guys are the balls - good upload

  • the singer kinda sounds like the Bad Brains singer, or vice versa

  • I don't even really like punk music that much, but this is pretty damn good. Drums could be better, but overall this really surprised me.

  • Punk rock is not a style that was "invented" - punk rock begins the minute someone picks up a guitar and takes aim at civility

  • I saw their newest CD at HMV today. Never heard of them before. Will buy it next time I'm there.

  • Who gives a fuck who invented punk, it's fast, hard, and sounds good, just enjoy the music!

  • The prog metal band Death is my favorite band, so I find this hilarious.... Not bad though

  • @TheSicknessIsTheCure lol prog metal

  • Just looked up "protopunk" on wikipedia and found the name. Love the riff!

  • @xreddragonx

Nobody 'invented' punk. It came from a lot of different influences, and from a lot of different kinds of people.

But if we're talking hardcore punk, all-black bands were doing something like hardcore all by themselves in the 1970s, not only in Detroit (Death),but in Philadelphia (Pure Hell), DC (Bad Brains), and New York (NY Niggers). People can argue about 'firsts,' but there's no arguing with the skull-exploding awesomeness and originality of these bands. They are f'ing great.

  • Imagine if this came out.

    1. Hardcore punk might have came faster and the first scene probably would have been started in Detroit.

    2. Hardcore punk might have had a slightly less simpler sound.

    3. Thrash metal and extreme metal would have slightly different sounds and philosophies.

    4. The prog death metal band Death would not have changed their original names Mantas.

    5. There probably would have been a resurgance of African American rock musicians.

    6. They would be a legendary band.

  • Fucking awesome song....gets so heavy at the end had to change my panties.

  • @serratedscalpel LOL what kinda of panties....

  • This is amazing. I love this band and the prog death band Death as well.

  • blackman andhis robot got me here

  • I'm really not sure I would call this punk. It's way better than the supposed originators of said genre. I mean, these guys actually have some talent.

  • death es la mejor banda de metal de la historia ¿ que hacen estos tipos usando su nombre? ne parece una falta de respeto imperdonable

  • THIS IS THE SHIT!!!!

  • shit hot !

  • It's an excellent song. Just listen to that intro; it's so awesome.

  • Let's Do This!!!!!

  • Thanks Korey and Co-Host this song is badass.

  • LDT! Thank you Korey and Co-Host! :D

  • Let's Do This is about to get this video more viewers.

  • @MTslasher agree,lol

  • Whoa. Thanks Korey and Co Host.

  • I just discovered this group through Last Call w/ Carson Daly.

  • great album

  • these guys are the shit, great record

  • 1:18 the first BLASTBEAT ever???

  • this is an awesome band too bad they arent new now

  • which 3 idiots disliked this????

  • Funk punk!

  • 2:41 - 3:02 I know this is a punk song... but damn!!! You can hear classic hip hop drum beat. Sounds a lot like "I'm Cheif Kamanawanalea" by the Turtles!

    P.S. This song is awesome!!!!

  • Bad ass.

  • this is awesome, black people are so cool.

  • @filth69ify1 Some not all. Not a fan of "yo, yo, yo bitch", sagging pants kind. They make blacks look bad.

  • @ourworldsatwar no one makes anyone look bad, people are just stupid.

  • who TF cares, it kicks ass!

  • @ceeteebars perhaps you are talking about today but at the time hip-hop was not an issue for Death not getting signed.

Of course, Jimi Hendrix didn't have that prtoblem, but that's could very well be an exception. I'm not going to argue against the R&B issue though probably the reason they didn't get signed was they were too early. Had they made it to 1977-78, I bet they'd have gotten signed.

See "King Tim III" or "Rapper's Delight" as to the first hip-hop songs.

  • @runningP123456 isn't reggae really slow? Garage had a lot more to do with punk than reggae. There are some notable bands with reggae influences (Bad Brains and The Clash) but they are notable because they are exceptions.

Now, of course, ska-punk and skacore are another story.

  • @az097668 in the US probablly not, but in the UK id say it is

  • @az097668 only a deaf, ignorant, nationalistic, racist idiot would reject reggae's influence on punk rock

  • @az097668 yes it is, learn up bud

  • really? This is ahead of its time maaan

  • Death is the example of record companies who didn't want to give a Black group a chance based on their moniker "DEATH" and also based on the fact that their prejudices in the music world. Some close minded people tend to believe that Black people are only limited to Hip Hop and R n B even though the majority of music in pop culture were essentially created by oppressed Black people, yes Techno and House are included on the list.

Music is for everyone but, know your HISTORY!!!!

    END

  • You almost have to make a couple distinctions.

For example, in my opinion I'd say the early stages of punk was influenced by groups such as Iggy Pop & The Stooges, New York Dolls but once you enter the UK now, who hear the Jamaican influence based on Ska music which has its origins in Jamaica. If you listen to a group such as the Sex Pistols (BIG UP !!!!) their sound sounds like sped up Ska music ( early Jimmy Cliff, Derrick Morgan, Prince Buster).

    PART ONE

  • I am In complete Awe and shame as to WHY I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF DEATH UNTIL I READ A JACK WHITE INTERVIEW....i am immediately buying all of their records and blasting this so the whole neighborhood can hear this!

  • love this song,

i dont want to be dreagged into the ongoing argument of "the origins of punk" I just always thought that punk (like many of the music out there) is something that evolved slowly to boom by the first wave. I say there were a lot of bands and musicians that had their hand in what became punk. Music is a collaboration people influencing each other everywhere.

Im just sad i barely heard of this band now.

  • Can we all just agree its a good tune? Yes, not a lot of black guys doing punk back then and yes it would have been classified as punk. Either way, they had talent. If you want some good Detroit movie entertainment search "Detroit Breakdown Imported" on Google or youtube. Action drama with crystal meth backdrop. Ten episodes in all. Fun to watch.

  • it's not improbable whatsoever. and who's to say who the first punk group was, but to say that black musicians didn't have a hand in the origins of punk music is ignorant. do some research

  • @OonaAKelly What lordfriti is spewing is the most ignorant of all, so why you're giving him a pass and targeting others is beyond me. Don't give me this "its not improbable at all" as if there's some great mystery surrounding punk music's origins. Music fans have ALWAYS known who the bands were that laid punk's earliest groundwork. Black interest was minimal at best.

Sorry that you get un-PC vibes from people denying that blacks were "first" at something, but you've made no point.

  • @xreddragonx they did invent hardcore though.

  • @OonaAKelly What do you mean by "have a hand in the origins of punk"? Are you referring to any particular band? Because to my limited acknowledge, only Death, Love (for the song "7 & 7 is"), Garland Jeffreys (for "wild in the street") could be considered as early/proto punk band with black members (by early punk I mean before 1977 - For example Bad Brains is not a early punk band). A list of black musicians in punk bands can be found: roctober dot com slash roctober slash blackpunk1 dot html

  • @ezek226 death, pure hell, fishbone. while dead kennedys, the germs, and bad brains are all heavy contributers to the formation of hardcore punk. Thats not even mentioning the amounts of reggae and ska bands that had direct influence on almost all the early punk music.

  • does anyone have the lyrics of this song?

  • black is beautiful.

  • Where Punk began

  • That said, I agree that this early punk. It's nowhere near the earliest, but it's certainly on the border point of first wave punk. Actually, I can agree with those who suggested that their sound is kind of preemptive of 90s alternative/funk/punk a la Faith No More, Fishbone.

  • this isn't punk? man, listen to the Testors and shut up. This is punk, u just mad that it black folks did it 1st. Get over that.

  • @lordifrit69 Or maybe "u just mad" that they didn't. There is no proof for this, it has never been documented (unlike the black influence on 50s Rock n Roll) and only an idiot would look at one black punk band from 1975 and go "blacks invented punk". Even if you don't count 60s bands, there was The Modern Lovers, New York Dolls, Electric Eels, The Dictators and others all pioneering stripped down DIY punk between 1970-1975. Get over it, no race can pioneer EVERYTHING on earth.

  • @xreddragonx no proof lol u listening to the song right now. like i said, do a comparison, U used ur ears. Not what is written. This is the 1st punk rock band.

  • @xreddragonx u should use ur ears*

  • @lordifrit69 What about the MC5?

  • @lordifrit69 Lawl, just pulling the same shit out of your ass because you cannot accept being wrong? "What is written" is in fact based on what people heard, not some conspiracy to deprive black people of credit they deserve. The early punk community did not advocate racism...most of the UK scene loved funk and reggae, and staged "antiracism" concerts. So why would they allow blacks to be denied due for creating the earliest punk rock? There was nothing to deny.

  • With respect to their talent, Death are unknown even by underground protopunk standards. So how could 1st wave punk have been the product of them? Stooges, NYDolls, the Lovers DID influence the1st wave, and were too early to be influenced by Death. WTF is left?

I've "listened" alright, have you? Hardcore whitey haters don't strike me as likely punk fans. You READ about an early black punk band, and used them to come here and make a fuss about whitey "stealing credit again". Give it up.

  • @xreddragonx Yea but the backbone of punk music is reggae. Soo thee only music whitey is 100% responsible

for is country congrats u made it. UR AN ASS

  • @84ratboy Reggae is not the "backbone" of punk. The Clash introduced reggae/ska to punk in '77, which was followed by a few other UK bands and the 2-Tone scene. Pre-Clash punk, a la Stooges/MC5/CBGB/Ramones saw no trace of Reggae. Even Free Jazz showed up in Punk before Reggae did, via the Stooges' "Fun House' album. It reappeared later as part of "No Wave"(Punk-Jazz). See also, Folk Punk, Punk Metal, Punk-Blues, i.e., subgenres of OUTSIDE influence.

  • @84ratboy Also, if you're going to go down that "100% responsible" road, then how does whitey have less responsibility for classic Orchestral/Chamber music, Opera, Celtic, Ambient, and European Folk music than they do Country?

  • @xreddragonx Or like Love with 7 & 7 is in 1967.... just kiddin nobody invented punk...

  • @xreddragonx Except for the Human race.

  • @xreddragonx this sounds better than all of that other shit though lol

  • @AOCRkid Which "other shit" in particular?

  • @xreddragonx the bands you mentioned. I like these guys better.

  • @xreddragonx Punk was inspired by a lot of elements from Reggae. MC5, The Monks, The Sonics, bubblegum pop, 50's R&B and Rock. I grew up on punk and pogoing. I personally think bands like Dr. Feelgood, The Ramones, MC5, and the Stooges started it. Bad Brains pretty much invented hard core. The Plasmatics were the best. Punk or proto punk wasn't about "race". it was anti establishment and anti E.L.P.

  • @osiruskat black flag pretty much invented hardcore. bad brains took the speed to a whole other level.

  • @SludgePunkGrunge Let's not forget the Germs and the Plasmatics. I knew who Bad Brains before I ever heard or got into Black Flag. Once Rollins joined the band in the early 80's, they became great. If you grew around early punk like i did, there was a certain adrenaline you felt listening to Bad Brains that stood out amongst punk bands. Other pioneers: minor threat,Fugazi, MDC. I guess we differ, although I love SST (Gone, Dead Kennedys)stuff , D.C. was for me the birthplace of Hardcore.

  • @osiruskat dead kennedys were never on sst. they had their own alternative tentitacles.

black flag was pretty much great with any singer they had. ginn was a madman still is. gone is pretty sick shit. fugazi was a great band in the 90s huge fan of theirs. rites of spring was another great band. mdc was good. i also like dr know rich kids on lsd stalag 13 ill repute negative approach. (another detroit band ). shit man i could go on and on. wish I grew up then.

  • @SludgePunkGrunge My bad, I thought I had some compilation with the Dead Kennedys on it. oops. I bought my first Soundgarden cassette which was on SST. Greg Ginn played here in town twice this year. He is doing more jazz and jam band stuff. Keith Morris was always great but I personally couldn't get into Dez as a vocalist. I personally loved Rollins with Kira on bass with Black Flag. Hardcore was king in my town. Great times. Great memories.

  • @osiruskat Reggae did end up playing a role in Punk as it progressed, but all I was saying is that Reggae wasn't an influence on the initial development of Punk. It simply wasn't there before the late-70s. I never claimed Punk was about "race", ever. I was merely correcting people who were shit-stirring race into the topic using horrible misconceptions.

  • @xreddragon Reggae was a kinda like a "hipster" scene thing more of an inspiration in spirit.Early punk rockers included Elvis Costello and The Police in the very beginning. I grew up when punk was very early and even Tom Petty got on the punk wagon because he was always drunk and had attitude. I found out about this band "Death"(not the metal band) a few years ago and know about their proto punk roots.People do talk shit because they are not familiar with the history of punk. Punk has no color.

  • @xreddragonx I think they had quite an influence upon later songs, but "invented" is not the word I would use for anyone. It's like saying that some electronic band invented Drum n' Bass, even though it had originally come from reggae groups just using drums and bass guitars. Not mush, but it evolved and influenced other artists.

  • @xreddragonx As a black guy, I don't care who the hell invented punk, I'm just glad some black people play it, there are too few black people in rock besides shitty metal and screamo.

  • Chuck's older brother's band? =P

  • i don't think it's punk either. but that doesn't make it any less fantastic. by the way, do I currently have to rock a mohawk, and 500 studs on my jacket to be 'punk' ?

  • this is the real DEATH band

  • ahh man been looking everywhere for death these guys are insane, great music.

  • Before the Bad Brains

  • Wow, this song, this band , all so good. Why couldn't they have been famous?

  • @MadMfDoom They had trouble getting a record deal because of their band name, and they didn't want to change it.

  • how come there are so many loosers on this planet ? you being made in a fucking factory or what ? how come grown ups are so crazy?

  • @kukilopezromero

You sound like a "punk" version of Archie Bunker. And it's spelled LOSER, by the way.

  • @kukilopezromero Maybe other people like different things than you? It's a thought.

  • @kukilopezromero Stupid Kids

  • They were hardly ahead of their time. Punk was going on way before this. The Sonics, MC5's, Los Saicos, + 1000's of other garage punk/ garage rock bands of the 60's.

  • @TeenageShutdown01 They are most definitely ahead of their time if you think in regards to bands like Bad Brains, Fishbone, etc...Black guys doing rock and roll in a day when most black people were into jazz, james brown, etc...

  • @porkpiepaul TeenageShutdown01 is a moron who thinks he knows abut music but has no fucking clue. He read a few things on the internet and now fancies his bitch ass a expert. White boys get anger when they think they invented something but find out they didn't.

  • @TeenageShutdown01 - Maybe I'm missing something, but if you can you name three young black musicians in the melting-pot of mid-70s Detroit who played punk (not disco) then you are correct that they were 'hardly ahead of their time'. Respect.

  • @dippermay13 My comment was for the person who tagged the video. But yes, you are missing something. You are making an issue of race. The bottom line is they were not pioneers of a genre that was happening underground the previous decade. Respect.

  • @TeenageShutdown01 - Maybe I'm missing something, but if you can you name three young black musicians in the melting-pot of mid-70s Detroit who played punk (not disco) then you are correct that they were 'hardly ahead of their time'. Respect.

  • @TeenageShutdown01

Sonics, MC5's, Los Saicos were progressive ROCK groups but were NOT punk....at all!!

  • @FILMLYFE since you don't know the definition of progressive rock, nor punk, you should do a google search. Just because it isn't a fast tempo doesn't mean it isn't punk.

  • @TeenageShutdown01 @TeenageShutdown01 Judging by the comments o here you seem to be the biggest idiot who doesnt know shit about music. Probably some snot nosed kid who picked up some punk for the 1st time and all of a sudden you became a genius on the genre. Everyone on here seems to agree you have no idea what the phrase "ahead of their time" means. I suggest you stick to what you think punk is SUM 41 and BLINK 182.

  • @FILMLYFE Man you don't know what progressive rock is do you?

  • @FILMLYFE Haha, congratulations on the possibly stupidest YouTube post of 2011.

  • They are playing in San Francisco February 25th!!!!

  • I just came.

  • i've heard them in polish radio... great!

  • Awesome my friends, just awesome!

  • God damn this song is good.

  • These people are amazing! How come nobody' heard of them???

  • hot.

  • The riff is friggin amazing

  • Detroit baby

  • Yep. White ppl are thieves that don't give credit where credit is due.

  • @AcapellaThaGr8 I must be the only white guy who doesn't steal then! Weird

  • @AcapellaThaGr8

    But they've got nice cocks.

  • @AcapellaThaGr8 that guy that stole my sony bravia was not white.

  • Ok, add the lyrics to this awesome song in the info-tag. do it!

  • if you cant hear the mc5 in this youre deeef.

detroit was like this when i was little. no one really cared, it was just about jammin' not all this poser candy cane shit now..

  • @PLR2

as soon as i heard this band i thought the same thing. you can hear the mc5's influence for sure.

  • @PLR2 exactly, thank you (mc5 fuckin pwns)

  • @PLR2 Did you really make an asinine "good ole days" post? Wow. You're so hardcore.

  • fuckin good

  • BRILLIANT BRILLIANT

  • these kids were right on time, especially for then.

i'm suprised that ppl are suprised _black_ kids were playing this stylo.

  • Love this.

  • Good old punk: Death, Wire, Pere Ubu, The Clash (mainstream maybe, but good).

  • This is good punk. As opposed to 90s skateboarding/extreme sports soundtrack punk.

  • This was actually OK, which is interesting given my general dislike of punk. It's still too simplistic for my taste, though.

  • I just heard of these guys for the first time today....what a hidden gem!

Detroit will always be ahead of the pack.

  • owns

  • Great band, i love early punk. It´s been said before but they were definitely ahead of their time.

  • Suenan Muy grossos!

  • Very Skate-Punk.Reminds me of early Suicidal Tendancies.

  • @RedVader29 no. yes, african americans can be thanked for blues and jazz. but punk? iggy pop! the stooges! this band was influenced by them. all the punk bands were.

  • takimag.com/article/cool_culture_death_culture

  • I read the New York Times so you don't have to.

    crimesofthetimes.blogspot.com

  • Favorite song of all time.

  • I guess Bad Brains got all the love ...

  • A work of genius. Talk about ahead of their time.....was this written for Obama? 5*!

  • Oi black kings.......my eyes are bleeding tears! Why the hell have this been kept a sercret. You are amazing as you know.
