Poor Lena. She must have had thousands of male admirers but got hitched to this guy who, I'm sure, was impressed by her fame and was quite happy to bask in her reflected glory but didn't want to know when she needed support.
My sister went to Italia Conti, same school as Lena, and she felt the same pressure about losing weight. In fact, she felt so pressurized about weight, she had a breast reduction at the age of 16.
Hanisbondage, I often thought her manager used her as well. But no one can be sure unless you actually new the manager and or Lena, but I guess the manager saw her as a profit, like any business. she was taken away from her parents to young to a new world. To sing and dance and put on a show but I guess she had no one to really talk to. Like, look good for the cameras, oh lose a bit of weight, keep the money flowing etc. The manager said she never had children,
@Musicmania1968 continued, so how would she know how to raise some one elses if she never had them herself. I guess Lena became an actress in her reality as well as on stage. Always be on my best behaviour. Lets face it, when you are a child, adults rule anyway.
amy winehouse was actually talented, she had an amazing voice better than most singers of her time and so did lena, its just a shame two talented people passed away..
@pinnell40 i was not comparing them i, was simply saying that they both had there troubles in life ,and BTW who are you to decided what illness is OK and whats not
Look, I'll say this. I'm a recovering addict. My drug was heroin. The stigmas that surround heroin are perhaps the most mystifying because people are afraid to talk. I rarely bring it up, maybe once a year, but today I will. From a purely physiologically point of view, yes heroin is deeply controlling and has direct link to serious painful withdrawal and getting through the pain as grueling as it is becomes the easy part. Even after recovery it takes two years of serious council.Same w/ anorexia
she is beautifull and had such a hard time by the sounds of wat evryone else says, but anorexia is just something where ur blaming urself for something emotionally and its all self hatred and deep emotional shit, god bless her.
"Saves on restraunt bills" will go down in infmay. The woman was skin and bone. The sowbiz machine is happy while there is money to be made no matter what the price...She died at 35, penniless.
she is still shockingly thin in this interview, however agreed, she had exceptional talent, and I hope now that she is at peace and finally happy within herself x
Nice to hear repetition of lies from The Sun. What Frank Bough did in his private life was of nobody's concern. After these allegations he rarely worked again. That's the scum UK press for you.
@uncompromising34 Frank is no pervert. He was telling me it is all lies as he was bumming me last night dressed as Gary Glitter and snorting half a kilo of coke.
@Feisty1967 ... Lol, didn't Frank Bough get caught in some Sado Masochistic, wife swapping, whipping orgy type of thing?... Hence end of career, what goes round ...comes round!
all women should be encouraged by this. you see what can be achieved with a little effort? if you spend all day sittings on your fat asses, then the punds aren't going to shed themselves. to become nice and slim, you do at least have to make some sort of committment.
@joejoejoe846 Encouraged by what? Anorexia? Which, by the way, is a fucking disease, you idiot. Which kills people. Yikes, god help the women in your life.
@pushelildaisies - not a physical disease, but a mental disease*** it is a mind game that makes you look in the mirror and never feel good enough, so you start out eating small portions, then it's salads, then a stick of gum and some water until you lose so much weight...well the rest is self-explanitory. it's brought on by insecurity mostly, hence why it affects the western hemisphere the most with the "perfect" images of women etc. some just take that "image" on the magazine a bit too far.
I was no fan at all. She was a sweet and lovely girl, who was treated like a piece of shit, mainly by her manager who just ripped her of and just exploited her. I hope she rests in peace.
Classic case of why young children should not work in show business till they ate older. The adults around them control their every mice and suck their souls dry. Poor girl.
British Judy Garland? you mean a troubled Alcoholic and drug abuser that faded away and passed on her washed up genes to her daughter Liza Minelli. Talking of drugs... its dear Frank Bough!
It's very sad how she was exposed and exploited at such an early age. It would have been better for her if she'd been discovered later in life like her Scottish "sister" Susan Boyle.
Her story always reminds me of Bette Davis in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane".
That's the first thought that entered my mind! Here you have a beautifu,l very talented young girl and then look what happens to her. Just like Bette Davis' character "Baby Jane". Sad, really.
The most disturbing thing about Lena's carreer is that she sang so few songs written for and by her..her managers killed her, she never had the chance to be hereslf with her great abilities, the sense of being trapped like this caused her anorexia , because what an anorexic feels inside in this respect is that they are empty, She never truely had poetic freedom, musical freedom or personal freedom, everything was being controlled by a bunch of idiots.
And before she was 18 she could have been in some sort of musical theatre group for children close to where she lived in Scotland.(something like the "Billie Barry kids" in Dublin,Ireland)
You can see where Steve Coogan got his basic idea for Alan Partridge from when you witness Frank Bough in full spate (e.g. "cuts down on restaurant bills").
Have you noticed the converging paths/directions here, one way with a young woman growing up while singing older generational songs, the other direction was simply music was changing, disco, punk, rock, pop, electro hip-hop, all newly emerging, her talent may not have been so much in demand with the new TV shows, but in the middle, her anguish is evident, for why? i don't know, perhaps she knew, I'm so glad she didn't do a Nigel Kennedy and get all...'rocky' either way she's missed as a star.
What do you mean?"her anguish is evident, for why? i don't know, perhaps she knew, I'm so glad she didn't do a Nigel Kennedy and get all...'rocky' either way she's missed as a star. "
Maybe as a child star and young woman the price to pay for this entertainers life was the normal experiences we take for granted, perhaps growing up in the limelight was charming until adolescence perhaps making her more aware of herself and critique maybe aware of a dichotomy, music was changing, she was changing to, yet beautiful and talented perhaps it wasn't enough to help Lena adapt to change and without experience(s) these absences may have registered with her deeply and pained her so.
I think I understood most of what you said except for the bit I havw quoted.I have been saying to a lot of people something similar to what you said hre, that although she was very telented that she should not have been made a childstar i.e. being on television and being brought away from her family and homeplace to live with strangers. Also I suspect that her manager treated her badly (emotional abuse).
Lena had a superb voice. i'm sure if she'd lived could have gone on to something even bigger. Mind you, to sing with Frank Sinatra at the age of 9 must've have been a huge landmark. Never forgotten Lena I have all her records now put on CD.
Let's not be too harsh on Frank! Yea, with hindsight, the joke does seem insensitive, but this was 20 years ago and at a time when Lena was apparently recovered and getting her career restarted. Her poor health and showbiz demise was not the easiest subject and I think Frank handled it ok. If you listen, he frequently compliments Lena and shows her compassion. I think he just wanted to help Lena with an upbeat interview.
I agree. Frank was just trying to be light hearted and bring some humour into a situation that everyone presumed she had overcome. He did complement her several times and he obviously had her well-being in mind.
Please don't get all "politically correct" about what someone once said. The thought police on here need to learn to see further than the end of their noses.
I always disliked you Frank Bough!!! Even before it was found you a perverted old man....but to make that comment OMG you are truly a complete a.. h...!!!!! Lena was such a talented young woman and it is a tragedy that she died so young. She brings back wonderful memories for me of a really happy time in my life. RIP Lena x
@cetza78 - I counted three rib bones in my BACK today so um, NO. I see you reside in the USA - the obesity capital of the whole world, so you should know something about fat people there! Idiot.
@Dingalingring Great Frank Bough is no longer on tv. What the hell was he thinking about? Insensitivity and total non-thinking spouts out of his mouth. First class idiot.
Anorexia was not widely commented on at the time lena suffered from it I think she was brave to come out and own up to this mental illness which is ultimately what it is, the attitudes of the day are summed up by this interviewers comment about restaurant bills
Obviously I have done some research, lena died not long after this interview.I did not know she was dead as I've been asleep for a very long time due to Postphelangiexpliotationism.
his name is Frank bough, he too suffered and lost his career. Underneath that cosy fatherly persona Mr Bough liked to sort cocaine at sex parties with young ladies. This was revealed in the news of world.
i would never lie to you...google frank bough...he loved a bit of charley with his hows your father whilst wearing ladies knickers, if thats possible (as you do)
LOL that is doubly funny. 1 because I used to live in England and just can't see him doing Grandstand in ladies underwearbut now I know it's true. And 2 because this Youtube account is under my wife's name Anita so I'm not the one wearing knickers...LOL
How incredibly sad it is to see her as she was in '89-- looking well and primed for a comeback, newly-married, so full of promise... and to know what tragedy lay ahead for her: the loss of her marriage, her career, her health and ultimately... her life. Simply heartbreaking.
I had the pleasure in Meeting Lena when i lived in Rothesay her aunt Margaret asked me to driver around the island after returning from Canadian Clinic to apear on Songs of praise i think it was,i later started my own Singing careea and sang with Margaret at a couple of venues,Hilda used to Baby sit my dad long time ago.
This video is sad for me,I have sent you a video when she was a child.I think that just maybe the early childhood stardom was not a good idea for her.
Maybe right now, Lena is living on another planet in another galaxy, singing away and telling the people who live on the planet all about life, love and loneliness; I hope so...
wiseoldlady7........... that nick doesn't fit you at all...why are you dissing her husband?? what the hell do you know about him??? geez..... wiseoldwitch!!!
I can hardly believe Frank Bough is making a joke about saving money on restaurant bills. 'Slimmers disease'? He's a numpty! Anyone with any knowledge of anorexia understands that it's a psycological problem. Lena was so courageous to talk about her illness. Thank god times have moved on and there is great help for people who are suffering from this tragic illness.
So beautiful, a purity & talent which sadly didn't quite make the transition into the 1990's as TV audiences changed and ideas & styles changed and moved away from variety acts in some way, i believe she knew and this contributed to her tragic battle with illness, her beauty takes my breath away, along with her voice.
LOL yeah.....I hope I didn't come across that way..I just think the ex was a moneyhungry jerk, maybe that's why he married her,who knows. That would be very sad. She seemed like a very nice, generous, beautiful girl.
But the anorexia was overshadowing her life more and more. If he didn't have enough wisdom and compassion to understand she needed him..I hope he rots in hell. But who knows, right?
How sad are the negative posters here. She was a young woman with lots of talent and a fatal illness because that is what it is. She gave pleasure to many. Respect what she did and criticise only if you did better.
What a tragedy

3.01 "saves on the restaurant bills doesn't it?" Did he actually say that???
rossmcl177 2 years ago 6
I guess he was just trying to sound more positive, but yeah, I know exactly what you mean, it's not really what you want to say to an anorexic.

This was revealed in the news of world.
lndac02 2 years ago 2
Are you serious???? that's an hilarious image. LOL
anitamcgahern 2 years ago
i would never lie to you...google frank bough...he loved a bit of charley with his hows your father whilst wearing ladies knickers, if thats possible (as you do)
lndac02 2 years ago 2
LOL that is doubly funny. 1 because I used to live in England and just can't see him doing Grandstand in ladies underwearbut now I know it's true. And 2 because this Youtube account is under my wife's name Anita so I'm not the one wearing knickers...LOL

it's true - he liked the prostitutes

Gone 10 years now Lena. You are remembered not only for your lovely voice but for your fragile and gentle nature. Still in our hearts. R.I.P.

How incredibly sad it is to see her as she was in '89-- looking well and primed for a comeback, newly-married, so full of promise... and to know what tragedy lay ahead for her: the loss of her marriage, her career, her health and ultimately... her life. Simply heartbreaking.
RIP, sweet Lena.

I doubt this would happen today! How invasive are his questions and as for him saying about saving on food bills! SICK!
shoegalsho 3 years ago 2
so sad she went when she did... could have been a judge on things like 'Britain's Got Talent' and 'X-Facto' etc...
she seemed quite sensitive and polite which I think they need more of on these shows, lol.
RIP Lena.

This video is sad for me,I have sent you a video when she was a child.I think that just maybe the early childhood stardom was not a good idea for her.

Maybe right now, Lena is living on another planet in another galaxy, singing away and telling the people who live on the planet all about life, love and loneliness; I hope so...
shafty1968 3 years ago
Well it was the '80s and that decade was one big "bad hair day".
However, her hair here looks over done even for that time. It's was probably done in order to conceal her thin, underweight body.

This relates to the song 'knickerbocker'that is on utube and mentions Lena.

You are correct! I must add that if it wasnt for that song i would never know who this woman was... such a sad story...

She finally died fighting anorexia.
escritor58 3 years ago
I can hardly believe Frank Bough is making a joke about saving money on restaurant bills. 'Slimmers disease'? He's a numpty! Anyone with any knowledge of anorexia understands that it's a psycological problem. Lena was so courageous to talk about her illness. Thank god times have moved on and there is great help for people who are suffering from this tragic illness.
pussyvillow 3 years ago 13
what frank forgets is his cocaine snorting, prostitute antics, cheek!sitting there all smug.
themachman1969 3 years ago
So beautiful, a purity & talent which sadly didn't quite make the transition into the 1990's as TV audiences changed and ideas & styles changed and moved away from variety acts in some way, i believe she knew and this contributed to her tragic battle with illness, her beauty takes my breath away, along with her voice.
b6gm6n 3 years ago
she looks just like hilary duff here.
laurensav35 3 years ago
Sorry, wiseoldlady7. You were not a negative poster. I'll hold the ex while you hit him.
jimnrodger 3 years ago
LOL yeah.....I hope I didn't come across that way..I just think the ex was a moneyhungry jerk, maybe that's why he married her,who knows. That would be very sad. She seemed like a very nice, generous, beautiful girl.
But the anorexia was overshadowing her life more and more. If he didn't have enough wisdom and compassion to understand she needed him..I hope he rots in hell. But who knows, right?
wiseoldlady7 3 years ago
How sad are the negative posters here. She was a young woman with lots of talent and a fatal illness because that is what it is. She gave pleasure to many. Respect what she did and criticise only if you did better.
jimnrodger 3 years ago 6
Hope you don't mean me...I am criticizing the ex-husband for being an unfeeling jackass, not Lena.

You remind me of Ricky Tomlinson, but without the good looks or the wit........

That's ignorant. How would you like it if it was a family member of YOURS & they criticized them?
Stupid...
wiseoldlady7 3 years ago
Doesn't it seem strange to any1 else that her hubby only knew Lena's father for a few months?
I wonder if HE engineered that meeting between him and Lena.
Maybe he just wanted her money & took advantage of her like every1 else.
You never know...
Why didn't he go to her funeral? Was his new wife jealous?
Jealous of a dead woman......stupid.
