  • Imagine having light rails on the streets of Manhattan New York City? Bad idea coz the trains will be killing hundreds of pedestrians and crashing on cars every minute of the day.

  • were are mirrors for ?

  • I'll bet all those morons who got hit were thinking they weren't at fault and that the train was speeding.

  • i like it.. go hell ameRicUnz

  • they can't drive! (the automobulists)

  • I've never been to Houston. The light rail looks very modern. But why this? This is almost a lack of respect to the transit authority. To spend a huge sum of money to create a light rail system, and then to crash into a train once every 12 days? 245 crashes in 5 years? This is insane! I love the idea of light rail on city streets like almost everywhere Europe, but this is too much!

  • The one where it hit the railroad repair truck at 0:31 was pretty epic

  • People should'nt be pulling in front of these trains. LOOK before you turn!!!!

  • Here's a solution: why not make the metro rail underground? making it underground would reduce the collisions and at the same time is an opportunity to expand to other areas of Houston.

  • I remember when this first came out, there was crashes on news like every week.

It was really dumb. And besides, barely anyone uses it and all it does is create accidents.

But at the same time, drivers in Houston are pretty aggressive and constantly breaks the traffic laws.

  • I'd call that a bad design more than bad drivers. Around here, there are some sections of "street running" light rail. But when the trains are on the street, they go at normal speeds and basically operate as a bus that can't turn. They don't go flying around at high speed as if they have a separate right of way, and blast through intersections. It seems like a very stupid setup. And this from someone that rides Boston's green line.

  • I think that the drivers in Texas all need to take Drivers Ed again after seeing this video.

  • Hundreds of other cities have "light rail" (we used to call them streetcars) and this sort of thing happens extremely rarely. I have driven in Texas, and the heedlessness of the drivers is breathtaking. One of my best friends is from Texas and his driving horrifies other people. I'm really not trying to be offensive, I like Texas and have Texan friends, but their driving defies comprehension.

  • Dumb asses! You would look out at a crossing for a commerical train, freighter that is, why would it be any different just cause it is a light rail train, there are crossing guards and signals as well as the train honking when they get ready to go thru an intersection

  • *smash* LOL

  • I thinks Houston hates this.

  • In Italy, similar street railroads were called "tritatutto" (all-mince)

  • Texas....SMH

  • I like how the narrator is a douche

  • this is bad place for this kind of trains... trams ok - but this... no way,

  • @inemanja that is a tram.

  • stupid peolpe

  • I'm sorry, I cant agree with what this video is implying, if this video is implying that the metrorail is at fault. The trains are NOT at fault here. hellloooo, there are signs that indicate that left turns are not allowed and people are driving irresponsably. We have trains and trams here in holland and there nobody gets hit.

  • Texas might be on to something with this new form of population control they have.

    It's a light rail? I know.

  • It is not the fault of the lighttrains......Fucking see where it all happens : Texas. All around the world are lighttrains, but none have been demolished, because fucking cowboys can't seem to sit sober behind the wheel. ok...I'm done ranting!

  • @gyqz

IMO..Light rail trains are mainly for mid-sized cities (like the many little cities in Europe, for example). However, Houston is a very large city (still growing each year) and deserves a better metro system, perhaps a heavy rail. World class cities around the globe have heavy rail transits: London, Paris, Dubai, Shanghai, Toronto, New York, Moscow, Tokyo and many more. I believe Houston should start looking into it.

  • @gyqz

I know the cost for it is a bitch however.

  • @jalfredl Yes....a big city like Houston definitely deserves something heavy weight and not to mess with....on the other hand : People know that there is a light weight system since 2004, so why can't they get used to it? The more they crash, the more taxpayer's money goes into that bottomless pit.

  • @gyqz

Are there many tourists that drive in and around Houston? Perhaps they don't have a clue about it. Anyways, I agree that the residents of the Houston should know better, especially downtown.

  • I'm think:

"Why in the world would there be a train in the city?"

  • Houston drivers suck for the most part

  • What they don't tell you is the thing was silent when they first started running it. Sure the drivers could have looked, but to put the entire blame on driver error is a bit much.

  • because many youths now are growing immature... and growing an immature dad and mom to their babies

  • how about this: just put guard arms at all the intersections. no one is going to take a left turn then. if you watch the video almost all the accidents are left turns. and to be fair some drivers are confused and not looking well enough to see the tiny no-left-turn sign. i know the drivers are supposed to be on the lookout (its their fault). but this could be avoided if the city got their stuff in order. "Hey lets put a light rail thru downtown with small do not turn signs and no guard arms!"

  • Houston drivers are pretty bad my car just got totaled out due to a Liquor delivery van charging through a red light... the stupid MF lied about it and guess what!!! HE DIDN"T EVEN GET A TICKET!!!

  • I heard there was supposed to be a line built from downtown houston to galveston island, what ever happened to that???

  • Jesus Christ, Houston doesn't deserve baseball, football or light rail! For God's sake, San Fran runs it's streetcars on "city streets", and does shit like this happen? No. I think Obama should sell Houston to fuckin' Mexico and be done with it.

  • @Lukelr I don't even know where to begin pointing out all the stupid things you just said.

  • @Lukelr dude WTF is wrong with you?!?!? im from mexico u dumbass!

  • How. Are these people. So. Fucking. STUPID.

  • Wow, that's just stupid. 62 accidents in a year??? That's more than 1 per week!! Idiots!! Like I've always said, most people in this fucking country can't drive worth a shit. Bunch of brain-dead retards behind the wheel... probably on their goddamned phones too!

  • Light rail has nothing to do with it...These drivers here in Houston are the absolute worst drivers in AMerica..That light rail is only 7 miles long....These driveers suck all over the city..Cant blame it on the light rail..

  • @DPhysicalMusicInc I haven't driven in Houston, but I've traveled to a little over half of the US states. So far, the worst "drivers" I've ever seen are in Nashville. I don't know how those people got a license to drive to begin with. They are astoundingly stupid drivers.

  • @DontFriendInviteMe I spent a couple weeks in Nashville on a work project at the Saturn plant. I'd commute from a hotel near downtown to the Saturn facility, taking a ~30 minute drive on the interstate there. (Can't remember which one just now.) What amazed me was how FAST Nashville drivers are... I set my cruise control for 100 mph one morning, and I was just *barely* passing traffic in the passing lane. 90-95 mph seems to be the norm on the freeway there. Sheesh!

  • @Gamezalot I lived there for about a year. They are worse than Memphis & Cleveland drivers. I actually used to make a game out of how many times each week I saw someone make a right hand turn from the left lane without blinkers.

  • drivers, check what is coming from the back and sides before turning...

stupid pepole can't they check before they turn,it will only take three seconds of your life,if you don't check it will take your life.

  • Now, they have gates that prohibit cars from crossing the tracks when they are driving.

  • I support the light rail system in Houston and i think it stupid that people would blame the train instead of the morons who aren`t paying attention to where they were going.People need to pay attention and not blame others to what happen to them for not being careful when on the road.

  • I guess the new Happy Meal toy these days is a license

  • @krayzeejojo Hahahahahaha..thanks for that comment,,i needed a good laugh..seems to fit driver stupidity in this video.

  • seems like some people win their licenses in the lottery..

  • These car drivers should not be allowed to have licenses. NO LEFT TURN MEANS NO LEFT TURN. Same with No U-Turn signs and KEEP OFF OF TRACK SIGNS.

  • wham bam train lol

  • I wonder what will happen if that light rail vehicle hits an Ambulance, and then the ambulance caught fire and exploded because of the oxygen tank inside of it? Will that happen? It reminded me of the latter over the weekend not far from where I live.

  • I don't understand. Doesn't anyone in that city know how to drive? Or at least have rearview mirrors?

  • I say this as a Texan - yes, the drivers here are first-rate idiots but many of them also work in the department of transportation which designs the road system.

  • Nice

Everybody like crash and the noise of broken metal and glass

  • I live in Houston, and the other day a pedestrian tried to beat the train and lost, as well as the train hit a dump truck that ran a red light. The train won on both.

  • I think the problem is idiot drivers

  • @KnittingPasta I think the problem is you're a stoopid idiot. Fuck off, jackass!

  • What I think is dumb is how the light rail system only exists in the downtown area. Same with the metro buses. Everyone here lives in the suburbs. If they can't expand to the suburbs, the system is worthless. I would love to save some gas riding the train from Pearland to downtown.

  • @teknologik101 I fully agree.Hopeful that happens one day and people could just hop on train instead of driving their cars to get to places.

  • @teknologik101 They should check with you next time before starting a major project.

  • @teknologik101 there's a fucking park and ride for a reason

  • @teknologik101 Now do you really think your fellow Pearlanders will tolerate the light rail??? They got mad about a park-and-ride lot.

  • @teknologik101 You wish.

  • So glad the Minneapolis LRT system hasn't had many accidents. And it's been open since 2004. I ride it almost every day these days.

  • Wow, good design there Houston

  • To say "good, this takes stupid drivers out of the way" is the correct answer. To say "It's the TRAIN'S fault, why's it in the street?" is probably coming from one of the dumbasses who decides he can beat a train to save 11 seconds.

  • Problem is Texans are Morons

  • @darencavalliere

oh trust me, there are worse morons in Columbus Ohio and Kentucky

  • lol, I walk across these tracks every day.

  • @ 0:33 I'm almost positive that was a cop car...

  • they have these in third world countries where people drive like theyre in fucking f1 while driving a >2 l engine on a chasis that starts to sound like its coming apart after 70 kmh yet there are less than 5 accidents per year in one city these guys are just fucking horrible at driving

  • Roads - cars

    TRAIN tracks - FUCKING TRAINS

  • the reason? americans can't drive

  • We have a light/metro rail here in Tempe/Phoenix. I find it very difficult to crash into it with all the street signals impeding my movement.

  • If you ask me, this train is doing God's work. Stupid drivers must be punished.

  • Comment removed

  • @Jackno7Daniel

As much as I HATE light rails, you are right that these "buses on rails'' are taking these bad drivers off the roads (for a while).

  • these are the quality houston drivers we all know and love......

  • The drivers there should have their drivers taken away from them for one year if they cause an accident, Portland Oregon has light rail all over the city and dosen't

have any accidents like these fucking idiots has in Houston, it must come from the hot sun frying their brains. ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha.

  • light rail is retarded

    no one rides this system

more genius ideas from the liberal city hall in houston

  • @2204Alpha This had nothing to do with liberal/conservative bullshit. This was done so somebody somewhere made a mountain of money. Stop with the stupid divide and conquer/ us against them thinking, it doesn't really work that way, well it does in the media as it makes it easy to report about and sells advertisements.

  • no insurance will pay something like this haha

  • so what? they are going to spend countless tax dollars to protect people that can't focus on driveing enough to stay out the way of a train? seriously if they're going to spend tax dollars on anything why not start with reviewing the drivers test there. i mean i don't care what city, what road or what planet your on....it's damn hard for a train to sneak up on a car and pull the ole " gotch yer nose" routine folks. hahahahaha

  • It's the lesson to those impatient drivers -- NEVER TRY TO BEAT THE TRAINS ON THE RAILWAYS!! NOT EVEN THE LRVs!!! It's really stupid enough and not only killing yourself, but also involved any other innocent people!!

  • I'm LAUGHING at how many drivers we see in the video are making left turns across Main, despite signs every block prohibiting it.

  • crash every 12. day?? :O

  • they must be \/\/eman dri\/ers ... lol jk

  • I'm sorry to say... But are people stupid?

  • "The majority of the crashes are due to motorist error."

    Yep, that's Darwin's inner-city commute right there.

  • 1:20. The city of Houston should should consider ways to cut down on people. And thats a very effective one

  • People are morons. Trains can't just slam on their brakes like a car can. They're HEAVY. Stay the fuck out of their way and drive smart. Douchebags.

  • epic fail, epic fail, epic fail, epic fail...fuel iiiin the traaaiiin...

  • most to all of them are toyota and chevy shyts. they all suck

  • i grew up in philly and light rail is common..since its been around for years accidents still happen but not like this because we're use to it and grew up with it.its happening here because these people aren't use to it casue its a new system were they never had one..they are also careless because they feel they can out run it..people misjudge the speed of the LRV's..a train can look like its going slow because of the distanse of the train to ur eye but actually its moving faster then it looks

  • just fine 100 grand to anyone who hits the train + bill them the damage count

  • At 1:11, you can see another Camry bight the dust. It warms the cockles of your heart to see another boring piece of automotive shit destroyed.

  • ahahaha 7.5 miles of track..., 245 collisions in 5 yrs ..and an average of 4.5 passangers per train/ per day...O_o

  • At 0:31 you can clearly see a "No Left Turn" sign that the driver disobeyed.

  • The trouble is that the lights go from green to red, no yellow, on city streets.

This is to allow for this thing to run through the Houston metro area.

This was a bad idea from the beginning.

  • @Arabhacks Why would they make traffic signals change from GREEN to RED without a 3 to 4-second YELLOW interval?

IDIOT drivers not obeying clear traffic signals.

  • oh yea hay officer that train ran the light and hit ME. it not my fault.

  • Easy way to reduce accidents: ban stupid drivers.

  • God Work!!! now the street is better without bad drivers!!

  • How can you miss a TRAIN?? D<

  • If the motorists followed the road rules then the accidents wouldn't have happened.

As an infrastructure designer you just can't design out the idiots - the ones that deliberately break the rules

  • Destroyed In Seconds: Your Moms Pussy

  • example of why the street car doesnt belong on busy streets. light rail isnt the future.

  • @lenin1928 well cars burn fuel waiting for the light to turn while a train just rolls along and its riders are putting more money in their pockets while you spend $60 to $120 on fuel a month.

  • how bout just get rid of the waste of money rail system?

  • Trains? This is a 18th Century technology right? Electric cars blow away trains. What a joke.....trains?

  • @BurnieB Wrong. Electric cars are expensive and only work for someone who just commutes short distances. They suck if you want to take a longer trip. Light rail is good for for heavily congested areas like Chicago, NYC, LA. etc. It isn't cost effective in smaller cities. But rail is still more efficient at moving large masses of people. What do you thing subways are, they're trains.

  • @ffjsb wow, you think electric cars will continue to limited to 50 miles and less? In the next decade and 50 and 100 years after that, the technology will continue to improve at a rapid pace. Yet, rail an 18c technology will remain stuck in the past.

Subways are very inefficient. The only subway in the US that breaks even is NYC. All others are a total waste.

Stop looking in the past, be a little more progressive, less regressive.

  • @BurnieB So how do electric cars blow away rail when they only have a range of 50 miles?? You just disproved your own arguement. You obviously know nothing about any technology if you think that rail technology is unchanged from the 1800's. If you think light rail is a total waste, you've never driven in Chicago or LA. Toll fees in Chicago will affect you whether your car is gas or electric powered. You can only put so much energy in a battery, that's physics.

  • @BurnieB Breaks even? The MTA is one of the largest debtors in the country.

  • @BurnieB funny how trains are the only thing moving while cars, and planes sit in line. LOL

  • @BurnieB The boston subway system is heavily used as well.

  • idiot politicians and their asshat ideas - notice all the people packed on those things...none at all.

it's usually the 'progressive' regressives that get a hard on for this kind of crap. You go fatties.

  • is this natural selection at work?

  • @Marty933 Indeed

  • @Marty933 Believe it!

  • i can understand why theres so many accidents, those things are very very quiet, and downtown houston is very confusing to be driving..all the streets are one way and many people get lost..i hate driving in downtown!

  • Great. Just great...

  • I live in Houston and drivers are really that dumb here. Whats worse is that people dont know how to cross the street here. Sidewalks is anonexistence here and most people live in suburbs where everything is spread out . You also got dumb ass bike riders that think its ok to drive in the middle of the road like their bike is a car or something. Whats worse is that attitude that public transportation is ghetto like peoples shit here dont stink. Dumb ass rednecks in the 70s messed it all up.

  • This is not what Translink needs to get if Surrey gets the LRT from Surrey Central to Newton.

  • I bet all those drivers who got hit were women

  • The record speaks for itself: the most "accidents" of any metro system. Trains can't stop like busses, trucks, or cars. Trains must have their own, isolated, exclusive right of way. Mixing trains with auto, cycle, pedestrian traffic is bordering on criminal.

  • @nemo227 No, I disagree completely. The reason I suspect is the cause of the accidents is the unfamiliarity/inexperience of Houston drivers with street cars. I've just returned from a 6 month study abroad in Germany, where they have streetcars (called S-Bahns) in almost every city. I lived in Bonn, Germany (~300k pop), where the S-Bahns run on the streets, mixed with auto, pedestrian and cyclist traffic. It worked perfectly fine without much incident.

  • The whole idea of mixing cars, bicycles, motorcycles, pedestrians, and trains is STUPID. Trains should be in tunnels (subways) or elevated but mixing them will continue to take a toll in human lives. We don't put airport runways on city streets nor do we run cattle through the city streets (except Spain and in the "old west"). It's political expediency and it's still STUPID.

  • i'm confused.. didn't they see the train? was the train invisible?

  • there isnt really an obvious solution to the problem when its due to retarded drivers..

  • all those drivers deserved it, you think they'd learn to drive more carefully, and not turn intothe path a moving train

  • fricking idiot drivers...

  • jesus... take down the train!

  • @Xionol no way, keep the trains up! they're taking bad drivers off the street!

  • @koeix2 Hell yeah! Thin the bad driver herd!

  • If you can't see something that big, and with headlights on, then you shouldn't be driving!

  • friggen hit a union pacific work truck. think he'd know how to drive around railroads better

  • The video footage is silent, but the television tabloid show just has to have sound effects, so they play the same tire squeal and crash sounds for every crash... lame!

As for the crashes, I think they ought to just put heavy metal guards on the front of the trains to reduce damage to the train.

  • Very funny.

  • Que risa.

  • you mean, houston metro fail

  • Comment removed

  • @Firebreath56

Worng, it's never: trains, metros and trams have always the right of way.

  • should have that annoying-ass

    "watch the tram car please"

    like in wildwood nj xD

  • @CYN9804 OMG I know right i was at moreys pier and we could hear from like on top of the rides

  • This doesn't look all that well designed from a safety stand point, but most of these collisions are driver error.

  • @TalesOfWar all of these collisions are from driver error* xD

  • its the motorists' fault

  • Well learn to share the road with light rails please, or u might ended up with hook-turns like we do on Melbourne - then u really gotta slow down!

  • Looks like virtually every accident there was caused by bad drivers, not trains.

  • R.I.P

  • There have been cities that have had trolleys/streetcars/"lightrail" for over a century (Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia) or decades (Portland, Sacramento) at "street level" and those towns have "normal" amounts of collisions between cars and streetcars.

The problem in Houston is that drivers there are shitty ass drivers.

  • @APES2L8 Hhhmmmmm,,,,,,,??????

  • Makemap needs to understand; all trains have brakes, they just can't stop fast.

  • If you don't want to get hit by a trolley (or any other species of train), don't put yourself into its path! It's the motorists who are 'accident prone'. It's plainly evident that many of these motorists are arrogant; they compete with the trolley, and trolleys can't stop fast. If it's a tie, YOU LOSE! Houstonians are on a learning curve; exercise additional caution with street railways! If you get hit by a trolley, it's your fault, unless the motorman runs a stop sign or signal.

  • no, the real reason why metro train system is the most accident prone light rail system is because drivers dont look before they turn and some infact dont actually pay attention to road signs like dont turn left or right

  • Those people are pretty dumb drivers...

  • Was that a cop?

  • Texas, go figure. No problem too big to not solve.

  • If I've learned one thing, Americans take a while to get used to things, people in San Francisco (who has has LRT and streetcars for 100+ years), Portland(since 1986), and Baltimore(since 1992) have all learned to drive around and with streetcars, sure, there are a few accidents every now and then, but drivers made it a habit to know how to navigate these street-running systems. Just give Houston drivers some time, maybe some dividers (like in Phoenix), and they will get used to it.

  • Houston has money to burn so the light-rail was a must!

  • Well seeing how disposing of all the idiot motorists is not an option just get rid of the rail system think simple stupid people what will it take for them to take that action 100s dead yeah ok don't let it get to that point.

  • Well, at least they sat a record.... hahahahahha

  • This rail system was idiotic. It was poorly designed. It will never be save. NEVER. Want to make the rails safe in Houston? Here is a 3-point plan: 1) Shut down the trains indefinitely; 2) build an elevated train system, or a subway, like you should have done in the 1st place; 3) Restart the train service. But, of course, my 3-point will never be enacted. Why? Because the City of Houston is run by blithering idiots. Watch this video if you want proof.

  • @timothywgray1 Most old school trolley systems shared the road and drivers were smart enough to give them the right of way. They had signs saying give the trains the right of way. Don't say the system is poorly designed because of the stupidity of the drivers.
