I'd be interested in learning more about this, could you list the hadiths that Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) asked people to continue playing music, when music was played in his presence and when he asked for music to be played at a wedding?

some precautions and constraints must be observed positively. The excess of the limits of propriety should not be allowed and case be taken that vulgar and obscene practices are not indulged in and mixed gathering of man and woman be avoided on such occasion. Islam teaches morality and practice of moderation and balance tempered by good and virtuous acts on all occasions.
A prominent group (including some big scholars and Sufis) holds the opinion that Qawali is permissible. According to them, music has been discouraged in Islam in a specific sense and Qawali does not fall under that (non-permissible) category.
Even those who have permitted Sima (i.e. Qawali) have done so under some strict conditions.
Almost all of their sheikhs regularly arrange Qawalis. Hazrat Moeen-ud-Deen Chishti (RH) even requested Hazoor Ghos-al-Azam Abdul Qadir Jillani (RH) to arrange a Mafil-e-Sima (i.e. Qawali) for him.
According to Sheikh-ul-Islam Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri music which incites the love of Allah, His Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), Owliya, and that of country (or Jihad) etc does not come under the category of haram.

-- Opinions of different Chains--
Different chains of Tasawuf hold different opinions about Qawali.
Naqshbandis discourage it and hold a strict opinion against it.
Qadris hold an almost neutral opinion about it (some listen to it, some discourage / oppose it, and some remain silent on it).
Chistis strongly like it and consider it an essential part in their spiritual growth.
