THE GREATEST SITCOM EVER AND THE BEST SERIES FINALE BY LIGHT YEARS! I remember watching reruns for this and the old Bob Newhart shows when I was a kid. Notice that the moment that the set from the old show is shown at 7:12, some audience members instantly recognize it and cheer. Judging by the audience reaction at 7:34 (when Bob's wife from his old series is shown) one would think that a rock star had entered the room. Bob Newhart and Suzanne Pleshette truly had rock star status.
@JohnBoy918 Amen! Unfortunately it's been so many years since then that I suppose many people viewing today don't understand that it had its genesis in that silly season of the TV series Dallas, in which we learn at the end that the entire year had all been a dream of one of the protagonists.
I absolutely hated this show. It was tacky and the 'comedy' was very forced with an audience (probably mostly writers and producers) that were overly coached in to laughing in an unnatural manner. Just look how quick they are to laugh at the scene at the end, when the lights aren't even on. ANNOYING!
That being said, I loved this ending because I loved the 70's Bob Newhart Show.
I was living in LA at the time, and my sister called me from the east coast and told me to make sure that I saw the show, and not to let anyone tell me the twist. I'm so glad she did.
Rarely does a sitcom leave one as stunned as I was.
@msmithstud Could you imagine Tony waking up, Jeannie next to him, and a similar exchange between them... then he says something like, "You know, I wish I didn't (do whatever brought this dream on)."
Just as she's about to blink back to that "moment," he'd stop her: "Jeannie, don't do that... at this point, I think I'm too old for this," then turn over and go back to sleep.
Jeannie then turns to the camera with, "At least I can blink us all good night." BLINK!!! Go to black, and end credits.
The local station that I was watching it on didn't run the final scene because they didn't get the memo from CBS corporate that this episode was 30 seconds longer than normal. A news anchor broke in and started teasing stories for the 11 o'clock news just as Bob was waking up next to Emily! They ran the full ending during the 11 o'clock newscast.
Thanks for all of those wonderful Monday nights, Newhart!
one of those dream sequences in a tv series that actually worked. Most dream sequences just leave the audience feeling screwed over. This one actually worked
I cannot possibly agree more that this was the best finale ever. I will never forget the utter shock I felt when that bedroom light went on. Sheer brilliance! Thank you for the upload.
Tears and jubilation on this final episode that was made. It was an awesome show loved it. Finale one of the best ever I don't know if any can top that:)
I think this is probably the most brilliant episode of TV ever made. To have watched "The Bob Newhart Show" in the '70s - the funniest show of its time, and tremendously missed after it went off - then have this show run all those years, then it turns out to be from the better show of the '70s, is just awesome stuff. Having the end theme music from the earlier show, that was the crowning touch. Can't believe they actually did it, pure genius.
@kellyadmirer1 Unless they switched after this clip ended, they didn't use the Bob Newhart Show theme. What we hear on this post is the Newhart theme.
I was just reading about this in Bob's book "I shouldn't even be doing this". They kep this ending top secret and even had a decoy set arranged as well as another phony ending where Bob dies and goes to heaven to meet God played by George Burns. The episode was 35 minutes... 5 minutes too long and they couldn't cut it tighter. So when it aired some afiliate stations apparently went to commercial and many viewers missed this last 5 minute clip we see here so they aired it again the next week.
I think it's impossible to describe this to someone who "wasn't there." Two different shows in two different decades, beloved characters spanning over 14 years of programming and 18 years of time. And then...in the FINAL minute, seeing the two plots tied together, with the final music and credits reminiscent of the original show. No one saw THAT coming. :-) Pure genius.
If you "weren't there," it probably seems underwhelming. But if you WERE there, you'll never forget it. :-)
I liked the Bob Newhart Show reunion where Bob Hartley, as a psychologist, was trying to figure what the dream meant and Howard talked about this weird dream he had with a genie.
I just watched an interview with Suzanne Pleshette done in 2006 before she died and she brought up how they came up with this ending....it actually was an idea during the 2nd year of "Newhart" thought up by Bob Newhart's wife....I'm glad they did it....it's the best ending ever of any sitcom.
I have laughed over memories of this episode for years and am tickled to be able to laugh at it again. Bob Newhart is over the top funny without filth----what a guy!
"it was all a dream, go back to sleep" is considered brilliant and the best ending ever to a show? **ahem** ........BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH what a joke.
They should have awakened with Mary Frann's head in their bed. Suzanne Pleshette was 100X more talented than Mary Frann. The writing and chemistry was loads better in the 70's era show too. I eventually couldn't watch "Newhart" in the last few seasons, it was awful.
that's the wife from the Bob Newart Show back in the 70's WOW so lemme get this Bob Newart had a second show but it was in the 80's called ''Newhart'' but the whole episode of the show till the series finale end was nothing but a dream WOW one of the best ending of a show AMAZING!!!!!
@blacksultan85 In the 70's There was "The Bob Newhart Show", The 80's was this "Newhart", then in the early 90's there was just "Bob", lol. The last one didn't do to well.
@gunittsolja1 Oh okay. I get it (thanks to wikipedia). He had two shows. This was his second show. The lady he woke up next to was his wife in his first show. That was actually pretty clever...especially during that time period :P
@pete275 Before "Newhart" - which was on in the 1980's - Bob Newhart was in "The Bob Newhart Show" during the 1970's. The wife in his bed was his wife from "The Bob Newhart Show." It's kind of dated now, but it was a huge comedic twist when it aired in 1990. So it's not THAT old, I guess.
@JesusManson323 Because they didn't want the tabloids to find out what the last scene was, this was shot with no rehearsals and didn't appear in the script. Only the cast and writers knew what was going to happen. The cameramen were told where to place their cameras and just keep shooting no matter what happens; sound guys had no idea how it would go. Suzanne was snuck into the set, so the audience saw her for the first time as the scene was rolling. Best last episode, indeed!
This was a great and memorable way to end a series, but I think the best ending ever was Six Feet Under. I've never had so much closure from a tv show.
