Plus the real bottleneck for electric cars were (and to some extent still are) batteries.

In terms of MPG, (miles per GALLON) actual miles traveled in some form of vehicle, whether by piston rod and crank, gas turbine or fuel cell there has NEVER been a vehicle that will move one person, 300 miles, on one gallon of gas. My motorcycle will get about 62 if I stay out of the throttle.
