There have been assumptions that Ozma is a Summoned Spirit that is so old he's been forgotten by time. Since no one knows what he looks like, he doesn't take on a recognizable form.
How do you beat the game at level one?.. Its not possible due to the fact that there are areas that force you to fight creatures. Like when you have to escape the petrified forest?
@Fridaydude Doesnt work, all new characters you receive are based off the highest party members level.. If Blank levels up he still counts as a party member.
@AKGraphiX91 indeed you are right. thats the thing that came randomly to my mind. another possible explanation is, as i have read to perfect game guides, is to reset the game until you face 2 spiders (3 or more are out of the question) on this encounter. This way, xp received wont be enough for you to lvl up as it seems with everyone alive of course
@ocelopyrocelot These were state of the art at the time. Remember playing this when I was 14 or so and being flabbergasted with the cutscenes and Alexandria. Even today, when you actually play it rather than watchit as a video, it looks very pretty. Best artwork of the series I think.
It is hard to believe no cheat-device was used. As the max damage requirements for Dragon's Crest alone would require level-up. As this technique's formula--(# of slain dragons)squared=damage--requires at least 100 dragons slain for 9999 damage.
As for Thievery--including the use of Marcus, Blank, and Cinna--the damage formula is the product of (# successful steals)(Zidane's Speed) divided by 2.
All this is entirely possible if the other four characters, and Marcus and Blank did the work.
@QuinnQuin: He could have beaten 100 Ironites/Serpions (considered as dragons) by using Stop/Petrify or waited to farm them after his party was under Zombie/Virus.
Thievery could've been farmed by stealing then running or farm-steals w/ Zombie/Virus/Stop/Petrify.
In fact, you can steal from 2 Serpions, kill the first one then run without defeating the second or Petrify/Stop both of them and you won't gain XP. Yet Thievery and Dragons Crest will still improve from the same battle.
Cheated. Fraya starts with Zidane's level + 1. So she would be Lv2 when you got her if you were doing a no level game. Aslo for Dragon's crest you have to kill them, which gives you exp. Where did that go?
@ffjason um, no. Wrong. Seriously dude. Every characters level is based on the party average. I'm doing a level one game on my PS3, and she was level 1.
You said no cheat devices were used, then I have to ask how you got Stop and Petrify VERY early in the Evil Forest. Not to mention, those Plant Spidders FORCE you to fight them, and they give EXP. So it's impossible unless you had a Helper. I tried it, just to see if you were right. (and to actually level up when you first get Eiko so she had high HP at 99) THAT was my goal, but it failed.
@Barbe You don't need stop or petrify in evil forest, you just have to keep all four of your characters alive and encounter TWO spiders which will give you the low amount of 11 exp to each character, in other words, there's 5 more exp till level 2. And it is NOT possible to give all EXP to blank since Eiko and amarant will join the party with unnatural stats, meaning they won't be at lvl 1.
@Barbe You will aqcuire the petrify ability when stealing the needle fork from zhagnol during festival of the hunt and the stop magic when you get the oak staff in one of the treasures you can find if you do the chocograph-hunt (can't remember which one, think it's small beach). These two abilities will help you stay at level one from gizamaluke grotto and onward for a pretty long time. Hope that helped :)
@Barbe I answered it in my other post. If you still leveled up while meeting two spiders it must mean that some of your party members were dead. InvincibleGarland shows how to do this in part 4 or something. But one of his partymembers were dead and he still didn't get a level up. Try it again, keeping all four members alive.
@Barbe Yeah that's what I'm trying to say, you have to reset the same segment over and over until you encounter 2 plant spiders. Then you won't level up
@Barbe There is the most fantastic guide on gamefaqs called Excalibur II perfect game, you don't need to use the guide to get a perfect game, you can just use it as an ordinary guide that kicks pretty much 1000 times more as* than any other guide, and it contains what it takes to stay at level 1 too :) Check it out if you want, it's written by Atomos199, you can find it by searching for final fantasy 9 and scrolling down to "In depth-guides"

@NanTheDark ...aparte de la magia azul de Quina, que pudo haberla aprendido comiendo a un contrincante en una batalla y después huyendo. Igual hacer esto debió ser muy difícil y haber tomado bastante tiempo (seguramente mataron al tipo varias veces mientras intentaba :P)
My party's arouns lvl 40 with Zidane quina freya and eiko.. Just have freya at multiple of 5 so The beserk status Will cure by lvl 5 death. Have quina be immune to most sts. And cast angels snack after curse. Freya should cast dragon crest while auto-hasted by running shoes. I just let Zidane die cuz he only wastes time by pressing triangle. At THE end he suicided with doomsday
i beat him with zidane, steiner, amarant and quina. high 60's. essentially 5 attacks can kill him but if your stealing then it takes longer and he has the chance to heal and use meteor and cure.
good job though! lucky he didn't use an attack that does damage you couldn't absorb!
my current game is Final Fantasy 9, yes i'm using an emulator....I defeated ozma just last night (with so many tries) using Zidane, Garnet, Freya, & Eiko....all of them are lvl 99...I don't know what's wrong in this video, ozma is very slow wtf?!....one I hate when I fought him in one of my tries, he immediately cast Meteor, killing the party and when auto revived...he'll follow it with Curse...luckily that's not what happen all the time, I only beat him with Auto-Haste to catch up w/ his speed
Ozma doesn't have ATB. When you perform an action, his gauge instantly gets filled unless it's done during an attack animation (that's why he's waiting to input his commands). This makes auto haste useless.
There are so many bosses I don't understand in this game. Ozma, Necron (final boss) Hades hiding behind a rock, and the secret boss inside the book during the Alexandria castle attack.
@luciesgondor In my file, I named her the first thing i noticed her bring called, "Ratface". xD You don't wanna know what i named the rest of my party... for instance, quina was fat f*ck.
for people wondering how freya got 9999 dragon's crest on lvl 1, the secret is using petrify or lvl 5 death on grand dragon...she also doesn't have to be in the party for the kills to count.. :D, as for zidane, exactly 400 steals can amount to 9999 on lvl 1 :D
Wow what a shitty super boss, FF9 its the worst (by worst I dont mean bad) FF in PS era IMO! Its super boring, but ironically Zidane its the best lead character of the PS era

Its possible. Bosses give no exp, also neither do stopped or petrified enemys (and you can run from most battles). With alot of savinf and realoding (if unlucky) its possible to beat the whole game on level one.
@JastinBeaver You don't have to cheat; it just takes a lot of skill. Boss fights in this game don't give you any EXP, and for regular enemies you can either run, petrify, or stop them. That way your party gets no EXP.
@mikimon999kiem virus status on EVERYONE. Virus status prevents characters from getting exp after a battle so its possible to skip over all exp and there are a few last boss victories at level 1 in fact
@mikimon999kiem he explains it fairly well in the video description. Bosses give no exp, you dont get xp from defeating enemies with break or stop, and then there is virus.

Isnt it kinda impossible to beat Ozma at lvl 1 considering most of the characters start at a higher lvl? Plus the fact that for Dragons Crest you have to kill quite a few dragon enemies which, would put you over lvl 1? Plus you would have to kill a boss or enemy at some time in the game. This is obviously cheating :P
@CapnSqweeshy Actually its not impossible. Dragons don't have many team focused attacks. Boss battle you receive no exp points, and making your attacks go to 9999 can be totally based on how much you steal, and catch frogs, but the dragons crest is sort of suspicious.

@demonicxxx Thievery (Zidane) does damage based on how many times you've stolen, Dragon's Crest (Freya) does damage based on how many dragons you've killed, Limit Glove (Quina) does 9999 damage if s/he is on 1hp, Dark Matter (Eiko's 1st attack) also does 9999 damage when used. The rest is just clever planning and very good luck.

The uploader is using the status effect 'Virus' to his/her advantage (not receiving any experience points). It's mentioned in the description and countless times in amongst the comments. I presume that during the early hours of the game before Invincible Garland had the opportunity to encounter virus inflicting foes, he/she simply ran from battle.
Seems like a very long way around to ultimately read the same dialogue/see the same story.
@jarosikzero doesn't explain how he beat the bosses he must have used tons of his time retrying fights cause even with updated weapons and magic at level 1 if a boss or anyone used a moderately strong move against all four party members they even with decent armor would die he probly would had to have spent a million gil on pheonix downs too and where do you get enough $ without fighting?
@MrPitseleh He/She probably did spend tonnes of hours going over the same boring battles having had his/her arse handed to them, but provided a player understands the mechanics of the game and takes the necessary pre-battle strategies (including equipping element absorbing equipment and other necessary status guards) it is all still possible. The video you're seeing here is from someone with admittedly far too much time on their hands, but certainly not someone who has edited anything (cheat).
@jarosikzero I geuss yeah it's possible but it would suck to try. You seem to know enough about the game do you know what you're supposed to do in the Chocoboo side quest after you get Zidanes ultimate weapon from by the shimmering islands because the king chocoboo acts like more stuff needs to be found.
@MrPitseleh Been a while since I last did the chocobo side quests (I'm actually back on FF9 playing on PSP - about two or three years since my last play through). There are 24 chocographs to find in total, and it is possible to obtain the 'Sky' ability before finding the final 'graphs. Have you got them all? Google the terms 'final fantasy wikia chocograph' for a comprehensive breakdown of their descriptions and locations. If that's covered, I don't really know what else to suggest.
@jarosikzero no i'm past the chocographs and i've gotten all the treasures from cracks in mountains and from bubbles in the ocean but the dude acts like i need to find more stuff. But oh well thanks anyway.

The majority of the bosses actually have really cheesy ways of beating them. Also for cash at the start of the game impress 100 nobles for 10,000 gil, then once you get to chocobo forest you can make tons of cash there
@ViciousRanger you'll notice he has virus status effect of, which means no exp or ap gained. so he can have fought lots of battles to get gil and still not level up. the only way dragons crest can deal 9999dmg is if you've defeated 100 dragons and theres no way you wouldn't have leveled up unless with the help of virus. simple way to get the stuff you need without leveling.
It doesn't count without stealing all Ozma's items;P hehe

@459262 Nop. Es posible hacer eso (es más difícil que otro poco pero es posible). Para hacerlo se debe evitar todos los encuentros aleatorios para no ganar experiencia (las peleas con jefes no dan experiencia), o petrificar o paralizar a los contrincantes para no ganar experiencia de ellos. Las habilidades usadas por los personajes en la batalla debieron ser aprendidas con el AP ganado de los jefes, nada más...

@NanTheDark ...aparte de la magia azul de Quina, que pudo haberla aprendido comiendo a un contrincante en una batalla y después huyendo. Igual hacer esto debió ser muy difícil y haber tomado bastante tiempo (seguramente mataron al tipo varias veces mientras intentaba :P)

My party's arouns lvl 40 with Zidane quina freya and eiko.. Just have freya at multiple of 5 so The beserk status Will cure by lvl 5 death. Have quina be immune to most sts. And cast angels snack after curse. Freya should cast dragon crest while auto-hasted by running shoes. I just let Zidane die cuz he only wastes time by pressing triangle. At THE end he suicided with doomsday

i beat him with zidane, steiner, amarant and quina. high 60's. essentially 5 attacks can kill him but if your stealing then it takes longer and he has the chance to heal and use meteor and cure.
good job though! lucky he didn't use an attack that does damage you couldn't absorb!

my current game is Final Fantasy 9, yes i'm using an emulator....I defeated ozma just last night (with so many tries) using Zidane, Garnet, Freya, & Eiko....all of them are lvl 99...I don't know what's wrong in this video, ozma is very slow wtf?!....one I hate when I fought him in one of my tries, he immediately cast Meteor, killing the party and when auto revived...he'll follow it with Curse...luckily that's not what happen all the time, I only beat him with Auto-Haste to catch up w/ his speed

Ozma doesn't have ATB. When you perform an action, his gauge instantly gets filled unless it's done during an attack animation (that's why he's waiting to input his commands). This makes auto haste useless.

There are so many bosses I don't understand in this game. Ozma, Necron (final boss) Hades hiding behind a rock, and the secret boss inside the book during the Alexandria castle attack.

for people wondering how freya got 9999 dragon's crest on lvl 1, the secret is using petrify or lvl 5 death on grand dragon...she also doesn't have to be in the party for the kills to count.. :D, as for zidane, exactly 400 steals can amount to 9999 on lvl 1 :D

Its possible. Bosses give no exp, also neither do stopped or petrified enemys (and you can run from most battles). With alot of savinf and realoding (if unlucky) its possible to beat the whole game on level one.

@JastinBeaver You don't have to cheat; it just takes a lot of skill. Boss fights in this game don't give you any EXP, and for regular enemies you can either run, petrify, or stop them. That way your party gets no EXP.

@mikimon999kiem virus status on EVERYONE. Virus status prevents characters from getting exp after a battle so its possible to skip over all exp and there are a few last boss victories at level 1 in fact

i dont understand why you people cant read...he says right in the description he used a cheating device to get to this point in the game at level 1. He simply used shadow absorbtion gear for doomsday.

Isnt it kinda impossible to beat Ozma at lvl 1 considering most of the characters start at a higher lvl? Plus the fact that for Dragons Crest you have to kill quite a few dragon enemies which, would put you over lvl 1? Plus you would have to kill a boss or enemy at some time in the game. This is obviously cheating :P

@CapnSqweeshy Actually its not impossible. Dragons don't have many team focused attacks. Boss battle you receive no exp points, and making your attacks go to 9999 can be totally based on how much you steal, and catch frogs, but the dragons crest is sort of suspicious.

Thievery does damage based on your successful thefts times your speed (i think). Idk about freya's dragon crest. Limit glove is self explanatory.

@demonicxxx Thievery (Zidane) does damage based on how many times you've stolen, Dragon's Crest (Freya) does damage based on how many dragons you've killed, Limit Glove (Quina) does 9999 damage if s/he is on 1hp, Dark Matter (Eiko's 1st attack) also does 9999 damage when used. The rest is just clever planning and very good luck.

The uploader is using the status effect 'Virus' to his/her advantage (not receiving any experience points). It's mentioned in the description and countless times in amongst the comments. I presume that during the early hours of the game before Invincible Garland had the opportunity to encounter virus inflicting foes, he/she simply ran from battle.
Seems like a very long way around to ultimately read the same dialogue/see the same story.

@jarosikzero doesn't explain how he beat the bosses he must have used tons of his time retrying fights cause even with updated weapons and magic at level 1 if a boss or anyone used a moderately strong move against all four party members they even with decent armor would die he probly would had to have spent a million gil on pheonix downs too and where do you get enough $ without fighting?

@MrPitseleh He/She probably did spend tonnes of hours going over the same boring battles having had his/her arse handed to them, but provided a player understands the mechanics of the game and takes the necessary pre-battle strategies (including equipping element absorbing equipment and other necessary status guards) it is all still possible. The video you're seeing here is from someone with admittedly far too much time on their hands, but certainly not someone who has edited anything (cheat).

You seem to know enough about the game do you know what you're supposed to do in the Chocoboo side quest after you get Zidanes ultimate weapon from by the shimmering islands because the king chocoboo acts like more stuff needs to be found.

@MrPitseleh Been a while since I last did the chocobo side quests (I'm actually back on FF9 playing on PSP - about two or three years since my last play through). There are 24 chocographs to find in total, and it is possible to obtain the 'Sky' ability before finding the final 'graphs. Have you got them all? Google the terms 'final fantasy wikia chocograph' for a comprehensive breakdown of their descriptions and locations. If that's covered, I don't really know what else to suggest.

The majority of the bosses actually have really cheesy ways of beating them. Also for cash at the start of the game impress 100 nobles for 10,000 gil, then once you get to chocobo forest you can make tons of cash there

@ViciousRanger you'll notice he has virus status effect of, which means no exp or ap gained. so he can have fought lots of battles to get gil and still not level up. the only way dragons crest can deal 9999dmg is if you've defeated 100 dragons and theres no way you wouldn't have leveled up unless with the help of virus. simple way to get the stuff you need without leveling.
