To become a magical girl (spoilers for Madoka) the contract maker will get their greatest wish granted. In exchange though, they have their soul removed from their bodies and made into Soul Gems, leaving their bodies soulless. The contracted magical girls then need to fight witches until their own despair overwhelms them and they become witches as well.
